I love you guys! Keep up the good works. Everything RLM is pure gold.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

and it begins again… the darkness of modern gaming…. comments@!#

  • Wizard Phoenix
  • James McKenzie

    It’s like poetry, they rhyme.

  • stefan

a reluctant thumbs up sums up my reaction to pre-rec nicely

  • Spacevagrant

Man I found that Jack missing the spider bit way funnier then I should have. Another great episode guys way to use your lion brains!

  • I was starting to miss Jack.

    This cured me of that.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

install you lion brain then crocodile, uninstall your twats and dont dont about things that you dont dont!

  • Are they not mercyful?

  • Harry Palm

The ‘Zelda’ games aren’t RPGs. RPG means ‘Role-playing Game’. You don’t role play in Zelda games.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

Rich Evans: “Whack whack whack whack.”

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i still think Jack is what happened in an alternative reality to Potter and Voldamort. they became one person, gave up magic and lived happy ever after as Jack…

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

It’s great to know when I hit my 80s and need my sexual needs met, I can just go to a nearby high school and find some nerds who can’t possibly resist me. Thanks, Jack!

The depth of this review is blowing my mind. I don’t think Plinkett has achieved this. And the Emmy in Video Game Media is…

  • Wizard Phoenix
  • I loved Z2 when I was a kid. I liked that they combined sidescrolling platforming with the worldmap exploring. One of my favorite games from when I was a kid.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

I always thought this was your best movie, Mr. Phoenix. It’s a shame you don’t play villains more often.

  • This is what I ask my kids every morning.

  • Jordan

“When you’re 16 you don’t pass up any opportunities”. What else do you expect from Japan crocodile brains.

  • Wizard Phoenix

I was interested in playing a villain in Batman V. Superman but something about it didn’t drive me towards it. I want to do a comic book movie, they are really interesting. Just matters on a character.

  • Lional punsalot

My marathon just completed, time for pre rec then ill read your comments.

Maybe you should be Victor Domashev: evil, anti-social blogger.

Speaking of Arty Farty Bullshit I did a photoshop in which I aged up Jack. This is the result I got.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Rich Evans: “You you you you you.”

  • I don’t get it.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

That part was hardly language anymore.

  • Lional punsalot

Is it me or does rich seem really disengaged in this episode?

  • Lional punsalot

I kind of like jack, I don’t always agree with him but I respect that he stands by his opinions and argues well. Occasionally he will say something really funny as well, I don’t exactly get the hate for him.

  • Lional punsalot

I think i wont be getting involved in this one, I don’t have a horse in this race I dont give a shit about any Zelda game other than link to the past.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

Rich is a 90 year old, its hard for him to get excited without medication.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i played zelda for five minutes 20ish years ago… MEH!

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

how could people hate anyone from RLM? they are just having fun and inviting us to watch… people who dont like RLM should uninstall their twats and die of cancel.

  • Dean McCopout

When Jack was swinging at the spider I was expecting to see this afterwards for some reason

  • Lional punsalot

I’m going to sleep now, what I can say after my marathon is that I shouldn’t have started my marathon of best of the worst. It made for strange dreams and even stranger comments made by me.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

A lot of it is ironic, as he is a hipster.

  • Seth

You guys are great. I didn’t agree with your take on Alien: Isolation but I respected it. I wish you guys would review games of this century. I’d love to hear a cynical dismantling of the latest CoD shitfest for example.

  • Seth

Rich Evans will be waiting in your dreams.

    Nom nom nom.

  • contagioned

please, the term is ‘artsy fartsy’ get it right

  • fred

Time for an artsy fartsy bullshit gif.

  • Rodney

God bless Rich Evans. God bless Pre-Rec. And God bless the bald guy too.

  • fred

Its their pattern to release a Prev Rec after a Half in the Bag.
BOTW > HITB > Prev Rec

  • Hank_Henshaw

Oh, boy! A new Pre-Rec. All aboard the hate train.

  • Goliath

I wonder how much future-Jack spent on those hair plugs.

  • RossDixonEllis

The fifth best selling game on the NES “wasn’t a classic” like zelda 1? It was only beat by the first zelda and mario!

I like the points being addressed for the most part.

  • pp

Rich Evans looks almost translucent in this one… must be his angelic purity shining through.

  • This episode could have benefited from some comments that would enrage the fanbase…

  • I’d like to see these guys cover some of the better-known Star Trek games.

  • Zelda II always reminded me me of Battle of Olympus.

  • Ragged Gypsy

As oddball-and maybe a little underwhelming-as this one is in the overall Zelda series, at least it isn’t fucking terrible like Skyward Sword.

  • Robby
  • stryker1121

    Be kind, you guys.

  • Michael Collins

    Ah man, this shit again?

  • Robby

    Dap, my Nazi brother.

  • Sully

  • LoveSW_Prequels

I always liked Z2. The sword just needs to be longer and full-life laser should travel the screen. it’s balls-hard though

  • nonya

    Y’all should review Space Quest.

  • Robby
  • Sully

I think you mean “Wani Brains.”

  • mmp

    Yes, you do.

  • Palpatine

So it’s like poetry, it rhymes.

  • Luke Sandstrom

The radical change to Zelda II’s design was a result of Nintendo of Japan responding to the Dragon Quest series from Enix, which was selling like CRAZY in Japan in the late 80’s. To date the DQ series has sold over 64 million copies worldwide.

  • fred

    ehh

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

damn i wanted that… no wait i wanted 2nd. GOALLLLLLLL!

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

Rich is a TIMELESS GOD!!!! bow to the Evans and you will be saved.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i think he is a bit old for that.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

jarjar is the key. if they can get him to work the whole prequel trilogy will work….. oh … wait…

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

    seems normal for you wizard.

  • RC_cola

I freakin love Jack. I could watch him say “arty farty bullshit” all night long.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i feel he is mentally bracing for the attack of the lion brained crocodile twats.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

you should check out Robbys gif.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

    sorry.

All they needed was to reference gamergate somewhere, anywhere in the video

  • RC_cola

Gross, andrew. Why do you have this ??

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

thats my cat. i made it.

  • RC_cola

Even worse! Exploiting that poor thing! Look how unhappy it is… look how dead inside

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

and i annoyed a christian so for me its a trifecta.

  • RedLetterRich

Much like Mario 2 (the Doki Doki Panic version) they could have slapped the Zelda name on ANY game and it would have been the 5th best selling NES title.

  • Rodney

Whatever became of the first two Retrogamers?

  • Hank_Henshaw

but you wrote “god”, not “God”. Like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, “just a god, not The God.”

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

that is kind of the point.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

    Breaking Rich.

  • Guest

So once again we have two casual gamers trying to make insightful comments on games they really don’t understand or are bad at. These reviews are cringe-worthy due to how bad they are at analyzing things and the constant contradictory statements. For example:

“Mario Kart is bad because it’s just the same thing over and over”

“Zelda 2 is bad because they changed too much.”

    Please, stop these reviews.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

please stop watching them if you dont like them. then we wont have to read your endless whining.

  • Ah yes, a game that’s underappreciated and has too many haters. It’s simple, it’s not the best Zelda game, it’s a good Zelda game, but it was also a cool game for its time. I know I’m biased here but I was not one of those that was disappointed that it was so vastly different from the first. I was actually thrilled with the new direction. Sure, looking back on it now I can see how almost soulless if is in comparison to every other Zelda game, but I can still see past that.

Also, one thing that people tend to miss a lot is all the similarities taken from this game and placed into the later, polygonal, Zelda games. Also Smash Bros.!

Wasn’t selling mags and strategy guides the point of making things so vague? Just an urban legend?

  • Daniel Bellfield

I really like the song at the end/credits

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

Zelda II seems to be the kind of gaming Jay and Rich would like since they enjoyed a new Nintendo game, Mario Kart, and hated Alien Isolation.
In the late 80s I was playing Mac games like The Ancient Art of War, Dark Castle and Sim City. A different kind of gaming from what these guys were doing.

  • mmp

I understand and respect the fact that you don’t like the show. But, by now, you’ve written the same bland criticism numerous times. And, if that’s the only sentence you could use to sum up the whole video, I feel bad for you.

  • Well done! A shipment of Romulan ale is coming your way.

  • Lional punsalot

I want a RLM review of my bathroom. It isn’t a special bathroom but it might help to explain other bathrooms to people.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i want RLM to review my Sfx showreel.

  • Lional punsalot

I think hes under the impression that because pre rec is made, somehow it delays the other RLM works, this may be because he hasn’t paid attention to the fact pre rec was created so rich had something to do while mike and jay were busy doing editing and stuff that he couldn’t help with.

That and he is proving that he is generally a fucktard at this point by continuing to ask for pre rec to stop hes blind to the fact people do enjoy it or so monumentally self obsessed that he believes his opinion is the only one that counts for anything.

Either way stop replying to him.

Don’t know about this game, but Items over Experience seems like a good choice, it worked perfectly in Zelda: Link to the past (which was my first Zelda game). What the fuck is a experience point anyway?

  • mmp

With all due respect, why wouldn’t I want to read the interview on the website that did the interview?

there is one god, RICH EVANS!

“I’m taking this bitch home with me.”

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i said bit… but if you wont tell anyone, i like that better.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

the fun part is if you watch the start when i fire that shot. i kinda shit my self a bit… i felt bad as a Australian dressed as a Nazi shooting a dummy made of pillows dressed as a Australian. the whole “i”m taking this bitch home with me.” was a dark humor coping with it joke.

  • Fartastic

Actually, the trailer didn’t look that bad, especially since the Adam Sandler character’s special feature is not being Adam Sandler.

Edit: Shit, this is what I get for not waiting for the trailer’s last 35 seconds and thinking a little. So the movie will include tranny, electrocution and “surprise facepunch” jokes and forced sentimentality(reconciliation with long-gone father; Sandler’s realizing that rape is wrong when you can’t do it disguised, mind the sudden transition to slower schmaltzy music that leaves you no time to reflect on his motive). Despite Sandler’s defensive comment that we haven’t seen this before, we certainly have.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

well at least you lernt a lesson of life.

  • RedLetterRich

If you actually paid attention to the context (which is usually pretty important) you’d notice I wasn’t saying it was bad because it was different, I was just curious why Nintendo would choose to so radically alter a winning formula, especially when it’s a company that likes to run formulas into the ground (Mariokart, and yes Zelda) In fact if you had ears you’d note I even say I kind of liked the game and the combat in particular at the end of the discussion.

But you’re absolutely right, we’re bad at all games and that’s why we hate them. Or, you know what? Just go fuck yourself.

Anybody who insultingly calls someone who doesn’t share their personal taste in games a “casual” is an elitist jackass.

we talked about it… but he wanted $500 million for it as CGI. i did it for $50 by setting shit on FIRE!… the only bit i didnt do was the F-111 napalm strike. i just filmed that.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i really felt bad. the first time i did it on cam is the “i’m taking this bitch home with me.” bit. watch my face fall at the effect of the gun. my first “murder.” poor pillows… stuffed into army surplus….

  • Lional punsalot

    I believe you andrew.

  • Billy Hayes

You sure about that? The first Dragon Quest came out the End of May
1986. Zelda 2 came out January 87. Zelda 1 sold 4 Million Copys more
than DQ 1 did, so there was no need to change the Formula because of
DQ’s Success. On Top of that, DQ uses turn-based Fight Mechanics and
also looks totally different compared to Zelda 2. So right now i do not
see how DQ has anything to do with it.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

I grew up playing Pong on our family’s Atari. While the graphics are about as basic as one can get, you can’t really deny the addictive quality to the game, especially in the higher levels. Over the years though, I’ve found that my opinion on the game has become a bit back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… back and forth…

Metroid happened beween zelda 1 and 2. It was a hit.
So, if both Zelda and Metroid were hits, mashing them together must be doubly awesome.
Bam! Zelda 2: Adventure of link.

Had to get some of that Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest RPG moneys too I suppose.

Growing up, I asked my parents to get me Zelda for the NES. This is what they bought me.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGAS6XcIiD4

  • sepiajack

    That’s awesome!!!

  • sepiajack

Wow… so many conflicting reactions from this – I’ve never felt such simultaneous arousal and disgust at the same time.

  • Sully

  • Except that it’s a sadistically-designed mess in many areas, recycles boring bosses multiple times, throws randomness into puzzles to make them artificially more difficult, and is ruined by the inclusion of jumping puzzles that will make you tear your hair out. It’s a nice looking game, and it has a decent story, but it’s no Link to the Past or Link’s Awakening. It’s not even as good as Legend of Oasis on the Saturn. I actually recently played through both Alundra 1 and 2 and I liked 2 better.

  • sepiajack
  • Sim City was very popular on the Super Nintendo in the early ’90s.

  • sepiajack

    continued in part twwwwwoooooo:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWK_hiGAPc8

  • It’s an action-RPG. Some call it action-adventure. Whatever. In Zelda 2 you grow in strength from experience points, fight random encounters on a world map, collect items, talk to people in towns to find clues, and fight monsters. It has enough RPG elements to be considered an RPG.

  • Sully

This was an infinitely more enjoyable game, imho, and a favorite of my sister and I.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdUBefQ1cT4

  • Sully

I’m not going to lie. That game looks like it sucks donkey dicks.

  • NES Willow isn’t a bad game to get. In fact, it seems Nintendo took some cues from it when designing A Link to the Past, from the general graphical style to the way Willow’s sword swipe attacks enemies in a 180 degree cone rather than Link’s very limited cardinal stab from the first Zelda game, which improves the combat considerably.

  • The game designer doesn’t have eye sight, you dumb fat skinny fucks.

  • Luke maybe overstated it a bit, but Dragon Quest released on the MSX before the Famicom, so they had a bit earlier than May 1986 to see DQ’s game design and popularity. That may have led them to add certain elements (such as the RPG-like towns and experience point system) to Zelda 2. However, I think they were probably also influenced by games like Dragon Buster (1984) and Dragon Slayer II – Xanadu (1985).

Oh it did! With such levels as : 50/50 choice which cage has Madmardigan in it! It did have one pretty good sword fight level

  • Except that Battle of Olympus came out almost 2 years after Zelda 2 was released in Japan, so if anything it stole elements from Zelda 2. Same thing with games like Faxanadu. Both are probably better games than Zelda 2, though it should be noted which came first.

  • Well, it’s not quite as classic… I mean everyone played it, but the general consensus among my group was that it wasn’t as good as the original.

  • sepiajack

That does look great! My family had an old Atari ST computer, and none of the games ever worked quite right. I do remember playing a Demo for this though which was a lot of fun, I don’t think the actual game was ever released though, so I just had the demo on a disc that came with an Atari magazine.

  • They definitely had the perception that Americans only wanted to play action-oriented games at that time, which probably had a huge influence on the side-scrolling focus in Zelda 2. Nintendo even gave away copies of the first Dragon Warrior / Quest game in its magazine because they thought consumers wouldn’t give it and games like Final Fantasy a chance.

  • Markham

Alundra 2 is very underrated, people always compare it unfavorably to its predecessor.

  • sepiajack

Also I spent many an hour on the Black Cauldron, unfortunately my computer wouldn’t allow me to ever save my game, so if I died I always had to start from scratch

True. I’m not knocking the game. It was better than nothing, but it *did* feel a bit generic, even back then.

The added RPG elements were a response to DQ and other Famicom RPGs such as Final Fantasy. I believe, in Japan, Zelda and DQ I both sold in the neighborhood of 1.5 million.

    Chapter 6 Paragraph 66

The worst part of any Pre Rec review is the fact that Jack and Rich are filthy casuals sucking at the teat of Nintendo Sega of somebody nefarious. It’s obvious these assclowns aren’t true gamers like the rest of us. I bet they’ve never even stored their own urine or feces in jars and empty soda bottles in their bedroom to avoid leaving their gaming space during crucial moments! I’ll bet they use cheetah mode to get through the dull parts of Maxis sims, rather than obsessively micromanaging nothing while they watch their city not grow for months of time! I’ll bet they’ve never even played an MMORPG for a hundred hours straight without communicating with anyone in stupid meatspace! I bet they leveled dex those fagots! Or worse I bet they prefer having sex with their stupid fiance’s and wives than playing an itinerant AAA new release. I could go on but instead I will leave my readers a list of things that define a true hardcore gamer so they can see for themselves all the ways Rich and Jack fail at life:

Hardcore gamers feel it’s their duty to introduce new players to a game by calling them faggot newbs and griefing and stalking them like an obsessive serial killer.

A hardcore gamer’s ideal gaming chair is an eighteenth century close stool with matching chamber pot.

A hardcore gamer covers his windows in newspaper to keep the sun’s glare from screwing up the brightness on his monitor.

A hardcore gamer can play Mario without touching the ground. I bet u fags cant.

A hardcore gamer liked all the obscure games before they were ruined by everyone else liking them.

A hardcore gamer is compelled to let you know how hardcore he is.

A hardcore gamer beat it on hardcore and he tells everybody.

A hardcore gamer dual monitors so he can stream porn on the other so he can masturbate between checkpoints and cutscenes and or browse comment sections and chats with which he can verbally masturbate into.

A hardcore gamer doesn’t have time for a job or the outside or another hobby. Masturbation barely makes the list.

A hardcore gamer feels entitled to let you know their opinion on a game is the only one that is valid because they are a hardcore gamer and you are not.

Hardcore gamers prefer foods that can be consumed through a straw.

Post in this webzone more tips on how to be hardcore.

  • Lional punsalot

A hardcore gamer will give up relationships, education, work and family in order to play games with people they will only ever know over the internet.

A hardcore gamer has a special hat they wear only when playing games they like.

A hardcore gamer can barely reach their computer because of take away boxes and empty cans of soda. But never lets that stop them anyway.

A hardcore gamer proves that regular bathing isn’t necessary to continue the life of a person, but studies are still to come in about how many years this lifestyle removes from their lifespan.

A hardcore gamer considers dating to be an irrelevant part of role play in casual games.

A hardcore gamer has had numerous rows with their parents about not coming into their basement and cleaning shit up.

A hardcore gamer spurns every real life friend they have unless that friend is also a hardcore gamer.

A hardcore gamer dies alone, then respawns, and continually dies alone.

A hardcore gamer is ashamed of themselves but deflect it by trying to call everyone else a casual gamer or noob.

    This is fun.

  • Sully

    “Hardcore Gamer” is an oxymoron.

  • Seth

What do you think Best of the Worst is, foo?

A hardcore gamer only loses when somebody else cheated or hacked.

I’m waiting for Nintendo to do an official remake of Zelda 2.

a hardcore gamer If proven to be beaten by someone that didn’t cheat or hack, lost because they had faulty hardware or connection.

  • Ogrot

A hardcore gamer has played every game in the Steel Panthers series, Panzer General series, and Wolfenstein series and by virtue of this experience is an expert on World War II history.

  • Hank_Henshaw

How can Rich be a filthy casual? The man plays MS Checkers by Vegas rules. Can’t get any more hardcore than that, motherfucker.

  • RLMkeepitup

I find video game fans to be a whiny bunch and could never put up with the comments they make. But even in film now there are remakes so fast that having to explain to a new generation why it sucks compared to older more original art would be mega annoying. I recognize what this show is trying to do, I’m just suggesting the comments will be un-ending arguments as fanbases of new vs old and sony vs microsoft yabber on and miss any points you have. You’re putting yourself in a pool of teenage sharks with keyboards for teeth.

  • Lional punsalot

Or they are trying to find an audience and the audience thats finding them is the reactionary kind. But they will need to get noticed somehow for the right audience to find them in the end. In the meantime welcome to hell I have a permanent home here.

  • Basque

Rich, Jack, a fun thought experiment / maybe important when considering how artforms develop: Zelda 2 is considered the black sheep of 2D Zeldas, however how many aspects of it can you think of that were incorporated into future Zelda games? Magic, interacting with people, the downstab, etc. And then how many other games took inspiration from the Zelda series, including those elements as well?

Jack mentions Citizen Kane as important viewing for cinema aficionados, but I think it might be more relevant to think of someone like Roger Corman. Typically you wouldn’t think of the latter as having the same kind of impact on the industry as the former, but then you can read a number of articles and interviews about many people in the modern film industry who worked for or with Roger Corman early in their careers.

Impact on an artform isn’t only driven by the most successful examples, sometimes there are unsung contributions that end up having a large impact throughout an industry.

  • mmp

I believe the problem with video games as a critic media or as community is its audience. The “gamers” are in general just intellectually immature. This majority can’t seem to read or watch a review just for what it is, instead of dealing with the arguments and counterarguments the general public maintain writing comments like “you got paid”, “you didn’t get paid”, “you are an fanboy of somenthing”, etc. Who cares? Was the review any good? If not, why? It’s a simple process complicated by non-sequitur.

  • ElectricPrism

I think most of the games that you “have to play” were from SNES. To me SNES was the golden age for nintendo. Games like Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, Zelda Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Diddy Kong Quest, Crono Trigger, FF6, Yoshi’s Island… Those are games that everyone should play.

  • Lional punsalot

It depends on the gamer, for example, a racing car fan would like to see destruction derby, need for speed, colin mcray rally etc.

An rpg fan would need to see final fantasy, warcraft, legend of zelda so and so on and so on.

Its easy to try and make your own opinion of what a “good game” is into declarative statements but you will always find people that disagree with your list.

  • donglord420

This sucks. It’s fun to watch you guys play videogames and bullshit over them, not try and get all serious video game critique. Stick to movies for that. Because this sucks.

  • donglord420

haha! its funny because people care about a thing! its not entirely analogous to redlettermedia being hardcore film fans at all! oh what a wit you are, sir

  • ElectricPrism

I’m just talking about Nintendo games in that list. If you expand that to PC games and other systems the list gets much bigger. But I think that most of the Nintendo fanboys should at least be familiar with SNES games.

Also those games were “good games” when it came to construction and polish. Whether you like them or not is up for debate. But much like Citizen Kane those SNES games expended the horizons for game to come and really achieved a sense of timelessness.

  • donglord420

haha! everyone have a LOL at these stupid gamers. fucking neckbeards! go crawl out yer mums basement and wipe off the cheeto dust, if the sun doesnt blind you! bahaha! fuckin idiot gamers, caring about a thing! oh one sec let me go write a 2 hour commentary track pointing out every little thing wrong in this star wars movie, because im a hardcore movie-watcher.

  • Lional punsalot

Then i accept your statement as valid, however this is not reflected in your initial post.

edit: you could include many atari and arcade only games on the good games when it came to construction and polish,
Gaming didnt start or end with nintendo and though they deserve mention and credit, if we were to list every game that advanced game construction and is considered classic the list would be so vast that creating a list is insane because there will always be disagreements about what is and what isnt a classic.

Sonic fans hate mario, mario fans hate sonic, amiga fans hate atari, windows users hate mac user. fuck it just isnt possible to try and make a list like that and not piss some people off.

  • Lional punsalot

Actually I am both a movie buff and a video gamer. My statements reflect my own experience of people within the gaming world, now you may be so young that you dont recognise self reflection when you see it but take another fucking look at my statements.

To the most majestic and illustrious Lord of Dongs 420,

There is liking something or hating something like a normal person and then there is obsessive fandom and silly grade school “no boys or girls allowed in my fort” behavior. Shouting down an opinion because the originator isn’t a “true fan” or “true gamer” etc. Is, well, silly buggers childish, and it should be laughed at as such. Regardless if it’s games or films. I actually enjoy dissent with Jay, Mike, Jack, and Rich when it is of the thoughtful mature variety, and not the, “I don’t like your opinions therefore you are retarded not a true x manbaby skinny fat fuck so eat a dick stop ruining my hard on” variety. Anyway enjoy your 420 dicks.

  • donglord420

no, i didnt consider that worth responding to, but if you want to go all Last Word on this, ok. a bug is crawling up my ass because its just joking as a method of shutting down any criticism. ‘lol everyone who doesn’t unquestioningly like this thing is just some uber nerdtard putting on airs about being a hardcore gamer, bet they slurp dorito dew in their moms basements’ is the brick and mortar of an echo chamber. furthermore youre in no position to throw out digs about original thought, these barely qualify as ‘jokes’ so much as making up or exaggerating sad stories about some loser’s life and then laughing at them. its on the level of writing a book of Funny Antics of Schizoid Homeless I’ve Seen.

There was a nerd with no friends, and he died alone.

yow these jokes, im laffin it up here, im a regular larry david

  • Ogrot

This is what happens when teenagers learn how to debate and socialize with others on the internet during the #gamergate era. Remember when behaving like an unhinged ragekid generally got you laughed at and possibly trolled? Now you’re just encouraged to continue the behavior by like minded ragekids and trolls, who are just laughing at them lose their shit.

  • donglord420

dude im with you on all of that, and im not going hah you guys are retarded because you dont think what I think. all im saying is that mike, jay, and rich, as well as I think beardo guy and baldy, all have backgrounds in film. they studied film, they’ve been interesting in movies all their lives, they’ve made films. they have certain exceptional qualifications to be in a position to make meaningful comments and critiques about films. none of the same is true for them and videogames except for maybe rich in the narrowed field of turn-based strategy games. I would say “stick to videogames!” if the giantbomb guys started making a movie review series too. any comments to this effect generally get dogpiled here, which makes sense, RLM fans and a lot of people are going to like this, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it, or that I’m ultimate fedora shitlord cheeto muncher for giving my honest say-so. I find them much funnier and more interesting to watch when they’re really in their element

  • donglord420

and these dicks are great mm nom nom dicks

  • Lional punsalot

We weren’t shutting down valid criticism, we debate anyone that comes here with a valid opinion that we disagree with and its generally polite and civil. Anyone that actually listens to what jack and rich are saying in the video and forms their own opinion then tries to intelligently make their point is listened to and responded to in kind.

However there are a great deal of posters who come here instead just to post “omg you noobz dont even hard mode” then disappear without giving us anything to debate or even consider. These too are responded to in kind.

These people deserve derision, and in doing so I used my own experience as an experienced troll.

You sir seem to have taken um bridge with what was said, meaning it hit way to close to home and you are trying to compare it to racism as if being a “hardcore gamer” is somehow a race of its own which is fascinating to me.

    Please do go on.

  • Mitchell Taco Nash

This person states “”The Cobbler” is getting GREAT reviews from people who saw it at festivals. On par with one of his best films ever.” Then they link to an article where the person says the trailer looks good. That’s their supposed ‘review’ of the film. Also, the person hadn’t seen it and nowhere does it suggest that the film is getting rave reviews from anyone.

What I noted was that those who HAVE seen it and reviewed it said it was really bad. I don’t care if they liked the trailer or not. That’s their prerogative I guess [I think it started out with some promise then went downhill fast]. What bothered me was trying to justify your view with lies.

To add onto that, I called them out on their lame ad hominem [which is fine using when you actually have other arguments], but their rebuttal was basically “No, YOU!

This is a sample of the people who enjoy Adam Sandler films. I’m not surprised.

I tried to write a decent response concerning your problems with Sandler-admirers, but all I can up with is this:
Fuck Sandler, he’s a negligible movie maker, and raising your or my blood pressure over any of his works or influences is a waste of perfectly good longevity.

  • Ogrot

Zelda II was a game I remember being very frustrated with as a kid. In its time it was a pretty game and had great music, but like Rich I was really jarred by the change of formula on all levels: Top down -> side scroller, Item based character development -> Exp system, and tonally it just seemed different. As a kid I used to run through the woods with a stick exploring the wilds with the overworld theme from Legend of Zelda playing in my head. But If I was in a cemetery I would think of the Palace themes from Zelda II. All those palaces for some reason reminded me of mausoleums in cemeteries. The staging of the sleeping Zelda reminded me more of a coffin from some medieval ruin than something out of sleeping beauty.

Yet even though the visuals and music stuck with me, I could never get very far in that game as a kid. It simply required more patience than I had, and I just sucked at the combat. I appreciated it more as an adult and actually have a better understanding of how ambitious it was. This game was really trying to wear all the hats in a time where most games wore one. It was trying to be a stat based rpg, with customizable level progression, with action based combat, with platforming side-scrolling action, with a large overworld populated with towns and dungeons, and a metroidvania feel without an actual open ended metroidvania progression. I can’t even think of an NES game before this that tried to accomplish this. And really no one figured out how to do an ARPG right on the console until Secret Of Mana.

Jack makes an interesting argument on Shigero trying to unite gameplay with theme. However I personally think the difference in the Zelda’s may have been more of a result of a company trying to broaden its repertoire and skill base by experimenting with things it hasn’t done in a video games as of that time. Nintendo hadn’t released anything close to a true rpg and based on it’s catalog was trying to unify what it was good at (action based gaming and platforming) with stat based rpg style progression with text based storytelling which it had done little of up to that point.

  • donglord420

i had to click that thing to see who upvoted it. there now its gone you shit sorry i dont main Disqus as a hobby

  • Lional punsalot

My first contact with zelda was in link to the past. I tried playing later games but I just didnt get along with them, and I never thought about playing the earlier versions to see if they were any good so I might end up giving them both a try to see if there is anything in the zelda game series that I actually enjoy or whether i just have a romanticized nostalgia for link to the past because I didn’t have access to many games at that age so any game I got to play was elevated above what it deserved.

However I know a lot of people are big fans of zelda in all its various forms and will probably just think im trolling instead of trying to express a personal opinion.

  • Lional punsalot

That bug up your ass isn’t leaving is it?

  • Ogrot

I guess it depends on what reason you have to play it. If its for historical perspective on the progress of genres you definitely have to play some things from the legacy systems. Plus a lot of those games from the golden era had a lot of seeds planted long before and you can see the prototypes of many of those ideas being slowly carved.

  • Ogrot

Mainlining disqus is the only way I can get high anymore.

All i got to say about Zelda 2. Is that Ganon is a bitch to beat. Also Rich and Jack are not the first to imply that Healer was having sex with Link. But i think that if you got 3 Broken ribs or a Broken Leg. I don’t think sex is going to help you out. Or maybe its just a game for kids and people are just reading way to into it.

I knew they were going to give this a better review than Alien: Isolation. I guess a game has to be a few decades old for them to give an objective analysis, hahaha! It’s like they were both the “bad cop” and forgot to bring in somebody on the previous review to point out the positives.

    Anyway:

I loved Zelda 2, it was good for its time, and the unforgiving difficulty give it more replay value than most NES games. Nonetheless I know it’s a rather flawed game.

  • Lional punsalot

Because FTL, XCOM Enemy Within, Gaucamele, Risk of rain and The binding of Isaac are all 20 years old.

What is it with you people, why cant you accept they just didn’t like that game and found it boring?

  • Peter Gorman

To maintain objectivity, they need that part in a review where they step back and say something like “Ok, we’re really giving this new thing a hard time, so let’s go over how the game succeeds at what it was trying to do”. But I guess it was funny to just shit all over something because they thought others had praised it too much or something. It’s like a revenge review. Is it that bad? Really? Is it really THAT bad? I haven’t played Titanfall (and probably never will) but I bet the game is much better than their shite review led people to believe, because they had absolutely no clue how first person shooters work nowadays. They were out of their depth. They should admit it when they are out of their depth.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Reviews don’t need to be compliment sandwiches to make you happy.

  • Peter Gorman

If I made my own video It’d do serious harm to these guys because I do homework on things I talk about XD

I love these guys otherwise, just have to point out the permanent black mark on their rep via the Isolation review. Gladly throwing down the gauntlet on that funny business XD

  • Lional punsalot

Ok so let me be serious for two seconds and pick you apart from the three statements you have made here today.

Your first statement claimed they only like 20 year old games, proven false immediatley.

Your second statement has already been answered, but to expand on it in order to display the full extent of your idiocy lets just remember the alien isolation review where they talked about how pretty it was and how much nostalgia they felt for the first fifteen minutes. This is the response to your claim that “Ok, we’re really giving this new thing a hard time, so let’s go over how the game succeeds at what it was trying to do”.

Your third statement you claimed to actually do homework before talking about things, which as i have now demonstrated three separate times, the full extent of your rambling bullshit, is completely untrue.

    Get the fuck out.

  • Peter Gorman

Didn’t realize we were equating comments on disqus to how I’d prepare an internet video for the masses.

They *do* favor old stuff, which I don’t mind, but I wish they’d be a little more honest about their biases, because it leads to a lot of confusion about why they liked or didn’t like something.

They’re new at this so maybe as they go along they’ll spend more time exploring what the video game industry is like as a whole, rather than fixating on indie stuff that features something they like (the bulk of their positive reviews) and triple A games they most certainly won’t like.

What, didn’t you notice how much they were slobbering on Miyamoto’s taint for this one? What if Miyamoto had had a hand in Isolation? Would the review have suddenly changed? I feel like you have some kind of rose colored glasses thing going on with these guys.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

till you get off your arse and make it you’re still just talking shit.

  • Lional punsalot

Dont talk about things you dont know, look crocodile brain, like lion brain.

Fuck for the forth time, they have been honest about their biases and you are the fuckwit who continually shows your bias and lack of research on what you are fucking declaring as fact.

Now your trying to put their having an opinion other than yours down to the fact “they are new” and how they are “nintendo fan boys” as if you validated your baseless arguments with fact.

Give up you have lost and so fucking badly it must hurt.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

What i can’t understand is how you can be so self obsessed that you think if someone dosent agree with your tiny mind, they are “Doing it wrong.”
and you keep contradicting your self. i’m not sure you even know what your talking about.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

speaking about people out of their depth, welcome to RLM.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

I really dont understand why if people dont like anything about a game they should bring in someone who does. are you insane or stupid?

  • Lional punsalot

Funny thing is they did, they brought mike, jay and jessi all in to see them playing it at some point and they all said the same thing “is that all you do?”

  • Benjamin A

Whaaaaaaaaa, they didn’t like a game that I LIKE….. whaaaaaa, all meaning of life is gone.

You do realize that you’re allowed to GO PLAY the games you want, right? And you’re allowed to enjoy them as much as you want.

Somebody else’s opinion does not automatically ruin yours.

  • Peter Gorman

You can gobble up the nonsense all you want, but the only way they’ll improve as critics is to actually hear opposing opinions. This isn’t a “win/lose” type discussion. I honestly think they need to beef up their credentials a bit in order to make passable reviews. Just because you don’t see the things I’ve pointed out doesn’t mean they are not there. Get over yourselves.

  • RLMkeepitup

Was this on their twitch live stream ?

  • Robby

No I think they mention in the review that all of them did come through and mention that about the game.

  • Lional punsalot

It is when your advice is flawed and based on nothing but your own butt hurt feelings and every last word you have said here has been proven false in every regard. And yet I am the one gobbling up nonsense? another lie exposed, I cant tell if you are a fully paid up liar or a complete imbecile incapable of detecting the irony of their own false statements.

You created a straw man to argue against, several times and I have demolished each of them. You have lost in every way at every turn and to fail so completely must only be considered a loss of your intellect to mine.

    You lost.

  • Lional punsalot

It has been mentioned both in the alien isolation review, where jack mentions people coming in and saying “this looks great, is that all you do?” and on the live stream where jay expanded on it in a reply to a question i asked him about how much alien isolation game footage he saw, he said about 10 minutes and thought it looked horribly boring. Jack then talked about how each of the crew came in one after the other and unprompted said the exact same thing.

    /nerdgasm

  • Peter Gorman

“Is that all you do?” Is supposed to be answered by “why yes, this is a survival game, you gather supplies and try to escape. Many games of this type have been made before, but this one is at least an adequate example of the idea”. But no, their filmmaker friends didn’t know anything about games and they, as purported game critics, didn’t know to respond this way.

  • RLMkeepitup

Your points are constructive and maybe useful for the guys (if they read them). I think they’ve learned from the Isolation video, and by removing the term “review” can produce more commentary style work similar to the Video Game Nerd. This series can work but as you said it’s not perfect yet.

  • Lional punsalot

You would answer that way, they didn’t because, and I know you wont hear this but they do not enjoy alien isolation. They will never enjoy alien isolation. They hate alien isolation. They are never going to give it a positive review because they had to spend 20 hours bored out of their minds playing the fucking thing to do the review.

They bought a triple A title, when they dont have a lot of money, because 1) they love alien and aliens, and 2) other people had given it great reviews so it seemed like a safe bet considering neither of them usually like triple A games and would prefer not to play them. They did this not to shit on a triple A game but because they thought they might actually enjoy this particular triple A title because of the 2 points i mentioned above.

Stop being so fucking incapable its laughably pathetic.

  • Peter Gorman

Thanks, I really do love these hack frauds. I think I just assumed that the earlier reviews were more on point because I hadn’t actually played most of the indie stuff they covered. Anyway I meant well, hehe.

  • Peter Gorman

I’m glad you finally admitted that they have a bias against triple A titles. You’re on the first step towards recovery.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i cant believe i only just thought of this.
I have been trying to find an insane B movie from the 70’s i think. i saw it late at night and its never been on again. i have no idea what its called and i thought my fellow schlock fans might know it.
It was a bit “Manchurian candidate.” it was about the crew of a nuclear bomber and it starts to get weird and then goes totally psychedelic batshit crazy… *****SPOILERS**** then it turns out that the bomber crashed and its all in the mind of one of the crew. WHO IS A BRAIN IN A JAR!! and the air force is using inception style brain manipulation to find out what happened, before his brain dies.
    Help me RLM Kenobi.

  • Lional punsalot

Yes they do, they have been honest about that themselves, and again your lack of research is your failing not mine. Look at you desperately scrabble from one point to another failing at every turn. Can you not tell by now that im playing with you peter?

There bias, as I stated quite clearly is known, but now you have claimed their bias to be:
    1) only liking twenty year old games (false)
    2) being nintendo fan boys
    3) hating triple A titles
the obvious contradictions in your own statements now collapsing into a void of insanity aside, The fact they are generally against triple A titles had no bearing because as they themselves stated they were looking forward to it, and enjoyed the first fifteen minutes then the game bored them and annoyed them to such a degree they gave it a shit review, which it deserves because its a piece of shit game with an awful story.

You see peter, the cat always has his cream.

  • Lional punsalot

I have no idea, but i think im having fun with this guy over here, hes got lion brain in spades.

  • Peter Gorman

Easy there, big guy. I don’t want you getting an aneurysm because of how much you disagree with me. All I’m saying is they need to up the effort a little. They’ll be better critics for it. This current video is a marked improvement, though I still honestly have doubts about whether it’s just because they already liked the game (more or less) or from feedback from the work they’ve already done.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

can i ask who told you they are critics? or that this was a review? this is two guys talking about THEIR experience of the games the play.

  • Lional punsalot

An aneurysm from proving everything you say is a lie? hardly.

You aren’t just saying “they need to up the effort a little” you are saying “they need to have the same opinion as me otherwise they are a “insert relevant insult””

You aren’t fooling anyone that you are being helpful by lying at every turn and continually adapting your argument to be something completely new.

You are failing to make any argument at all, and its been funny watching your demise into a pitiful “im just saying they need to up the effort” instead of your glaringly bullshit statements.

  • Peter Gorman

Well what are they supposed to be then? Like, do you think they should add a disclaimer at the beginning that their comments are pointless, or something like that? Actually I think I might like that idea πŸ˜›

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

people dont have to like the same boring generic commercial games that you do.

  • WoodyBBad

But but…he doesn’t wear a douchebag fedora or have a silly moustache.

  • Anders Hass

Some people wants to boycott Kotaku because of corruption πŸ™‚

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

you seem unable to grasp the core concept that not everyone will or should agree with you. live with it.

  • Peter Gorman

Ahaha, that guy was such a putz. Spent most of the movie unconscious in the steel tank.

I don’t like triple A’s, generally, but everybody deserves a fair shake regardless of where a product comes from. It’s important to journalistic integrity.

  • WoodyBBad

Shit, I thought you actually RAN a fucking marathon.

  • WoodyBBad

It’s like if Richie Rich was crippled. A super wealthy disabled kid.

  • Lional punsalot

my running days are over friend.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

now you think they are journalists? when did that happen?
and even if they are. so what! if someone thinks a game is shit they can and should do so. there is no integrity not giving your full and honest opinion. thats the road to gamergate.

  • Ogrot

But now you know more about what’s going on in the country, Thank you Percy Gryce for your service.

  • Peter Gorman

There’s a difference between giving a qualified opinion of disagreement and just rolling around in their own inside joke about how much they hate something that got favorable reviews. If you don’t like the term “journalistic integrity” you could just say “things that would make the videos better”. That’s all I’m getting at here.

  • Lional punsalot

They dont understand this at all, everything has to be two sided now. /you aren’t allowed to have an opinion either way you just have to say both sides of the argument so people dont have to think for themselves or have their own opinion questioned in anyway whatsoever because they only listen to the parts that validate their own opinion and ignore the rest.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i’m worried that he has an actual spade in his brain.

  • Lional punsalot

They hate the favorable reviews because they listened to them.

They hate the game because its shit.

They hate the game because its shit.

They hate the game because its shit.

(i heard somewhere if you repeat things three times it sometimes helps the demented to remember whats being said)

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i thought i was having a brain aneurysm but it was just gorman making no sense. all over the place like a mad womans shit.

I have broken him Andrew, its fantastic isn’t it, its fucking glorious if i do say so myself.

  • Peter Gorman

Well, how can I argue with a crazy rant like that?

just because you see things dosnt make you right. just self obsessed and delusional.

You cant, you cant argue with anything I have given you at any point tonight. Why not have fun with you.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

with a crazier rant… its the only way to be sure….

  • Lional punsalot

I’m thinking of taking this to the nth dimension here.

  • Peter Gorman

I don’t think ill of you lot for disagreeing, i’m not sure why you’re wasting time thinking ill of me for pointing out things you had not considered. They just need to polish up a bit.

  • Lional punsalot

I’m worried conversing with him may have done permanent damage to my brain.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i thought you wanted journalistic integrity and even handed commentary?… on a comedy site?

  • Peter Gorman

    Yes. Exactly.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

you should have gone with the crazy rant… at least that would be funny.

  • Lional punsalot

Because of how many times you have blatantly lied and backed down without once admitting your lies, without once conceding your points and retracting your statements and have instead attempted doubling down over and over and being beaten over and over and to the point where you have contradicted yourself several times now without even accepting that you are doing it.

Its fun to keep you talking because every comment you make descends to another level of idiocy and all I have to do is keep goading you into making more lies.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

hahahahahahahahahaha so basically your whole commentary is an elaborate brick joke…. thanks for the laugh.

  • Peter Gorman

Clearly you’re speaking from a clear-minded point of view, how could anyone doubt the veracity of your hyperbole and trollish ignorance?

    Peter Gorman
    D.O.A. 11/15/14 approximately 9:00pm EST
Cause of death: The following statement

“…the only way they’ll improve as critics is to actually hear opposing opinions.”
    ___

Since when, in the history of this world, has a critic ever given two shits about someone else’s opinion? They make a living having their own opinions. It’s kinda their fucking deal.

I get it, you liked Alien: Isolation, the RLM guys didn’t. I’m sorry it rained on Parade Day, but not everyone’s going to like every hit game, no matter how many others throw praise in its direction.
Isolation was a pretty game, I will say that, but unfortunately, graphics don’t mean shit these days. 80% of the games released are fucking stunning compared to a decade ago. What counts nowadays are things like game mechanics, diversity, level of difficulty/playability, repeat playability.
Alien: Isolation, for all its glorious graphics, fails at all of these tests. It’s horribly repetitive. The diversity is limited to 3 ways to open a door: Symbol Keycode, Numeric Keycode, Wrench. And that about does it for the task element. The rest of the game is staying out of the vision cone of the AI, which is pretty easy.

I’ll grant that it’s the best Alien game, but that’s like saying Revenge of the Sith is the best Prequel. It doesn’t really count for much.

  • Lional punsalot

It may be sad, but I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to use that since I came up with my name, its the small pleasures that really make life great.

  • Mark Bisone

“there are people who have never done anything but shit on RLM ranked higher than you and me”

    Who?

  • Lional punsalot

Dr who is amazing at times and magic the gathering, meh that got old 10 years ago.

  • fred

Not really, just left > to right.

  • fred

He doesn’t give a shit about the extended universe, and he’s laid off comic books ever since Spider Man made a deal with the devil.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i just went to check and they are gone… or i was really drunk and imagined it.

  • Mark Bisone

    Yes.

  • Peter Gorman

The opinions I meant are the ones on various message boards, such as this one. The guys need to know how they can improve, not just insubstantial fanboy praise, heh. I didn’t mean they literally needed another critic of an opposing view to help unbias their triple A reviews (although that might help a little, make it a little less of a hipstery echo chamber). They just need to take into account the fact that others might disagree with them and why. They can do this themselves, internally, they don’t even need other people to do this, but comments can help point out where some improvement might be needed.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the RLM quite a bit, but this stuff is new and still needs a bit of work to be more qualified and enjoyable. I think in the future they probably just shouldn’t play games to their conclusion if they tire of it, I think they were venting their frustration at having to force their way through 20 hours to make the video deadlines. They could just say something to the effect of “we only got to this point in the game because we lost patience with it, it’s clearly not for us, so we’ll just review what we did play”. That would work out pretty well.

  • whip

    Such an intellectually vapid response…

He’s not feeling that his opinion is ruined because of their opinion. I’m sure he is quite happy in his opinion.

He’s disappointed that they have come to the wrong conclusion or opinion about this classic game. Yes, I’m calling that subjectively, as the majority of fans and critics think it was a good game.

This is not an effort to appeal to popularity, as a fallacy. When you have praise from fans, critics AND peers, that is far more compelling evidence of somethings quality.

The game is far from flawless, but equally far from the kind of mess Jack makes it out to be.

Rich looks punch drunk, tired and confused. I suspect he didn’t give two craps about doing this game, and it’s more about Jack’s personal axe to grind.

  • bassbait

I think when you said “subjectively” you meant “objectively”. But it actually is subjective so you’re either not making a point at all or using the wrong word. you are actually commiting the ad populem fallacy, which is “if lots of people agree it must be right”. You’re saying that (if you have your words mixed up), something is objectively good because a lot of people agree with it. Religion and politics have proven this extremely wrong. There is no objective quality to art because defining quality in art is itself subjective. In order to claim that something has “quality” you have to come up with your own definition of what constitutes “quality”. If something is quality because lots of people like it, then yes, objectively, lots of people like Alien: Isolation. Doesn’t mean that it’s objectively a quality game.

  • Palpatine

Spider Man made a deal with the devil? And I thought Emo Peter was stupid.

  • Palpatine

He’s done so many things behind my back that’s it’s not even funny.

  • Sully

But then they’d get shit for reviewing a game they didn’t complete. It’d be like sitting through the first 10 minutes of Reservoir Dogs and saying, “I didn’t like it, the whole movie consist of some assholes bitching about gratuity at a dinner.”
Sure suffering through the game in its entirety probably fueled their disdain for it, but one can only fairly judge something they’ve fully covered.
Personally, I don’t think they raised a single issue with the game that I didn’t agree with, and I too finished it.

Again, best of the franchise β‰  good game.

  • bassbait

You know who I hate? That Plinkett guy. Always going into great detail about why he doesn’t like something and hardly ever acknowledging the opposing opinion and calling attention to it!

  • Peter Gorman

Plinkett constantly addressed dissenting opinions. I loved how he’d point out that something didn’t make sense and then say “but maybe the force meant for them to be together”, hahaha

  • Lional punsalot

So the fact that other people enjoyed it means that rich and jack did as well?

Start trying to make sense whip.

  • bassbait

so the only people allowed to review games are people that have a background in making them? Ok, I’m following your abandonment of logic.

  • bassbait

so you’re asking for Pre-rec to explain why people who they disagree with are wrong? Because their reviews already explain their opinion so they don’t really need to explain the dissent. The Alien: Isolation review boils down to “this game wasn’t well made and we didn’t enjoy playing it” The opposite opinion is clearly that it was well made and enjoyable. How would saying that other people feel that way affect the review at all?

  • bassbait

the only person I’m laughing at right now is you. If you’re the representative for gamers too, then I’ll have to have a good laugh at gamers as well.

  • Peter Gorman

Most of their criticisms amounted to “this game is all about opening doors and I don’t like that” and “the alien, a 35 year old franchise, isn’t scary enough”. Considering that it was a survival game about an Alien, the fact that you survived in it, and that there was an Alien were fairly invalid criticisms. I think they just had not ever played a survival horror game before. Maybe they didn’t realize that saying a game is bad for being exactly what it set out to be wasn’t a very good criticism. More than anything I just wanted reviews that sucked less, and having a more qualified dissent would have helped, probably.

  • Lional punsalot

I’m still waiting for this video you fucktard, get to it already or shut the fuck up.

  • bassbait

well forgive me for not remembering their review super well, and for not having played the game, but my criticism, having not played the game, could very likely apply anyways given that it is a “survival horror” and that concept itself to me is broken. I think the game “sucks” (as in, what I expect the game to be) because it relies too much on the threat of death as a means of instilling fear, instead of going through more psychological possibilities like instilling a sense of guilt, a sense of regret, a sense of hopelessness, a sense of confusion, a sense of unpredictability. If it’s anything like Amnesia, it’s probably a garbage game to me. If it’s more like I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream, or LSD: The Dream Emulator, or even The Suffering, that’d be miles better. Guessing it’s not based on what I’ve seen from reviews.

  • Peter Gorman

Well see, that would have been a more interesting version of the review: could they have possibly liked the game if one accepts that it’s survival horror and is part of the alien franchise? Would they ever want to play a survival horror game? Is the whole genre a pile of shit (in their eyes)? I would have been interested to see them maybe come up with scenarios that, for them, would have made playing the game more fun for them. Constructive criticism and such, though I guess that’s not really been their style so far.

  • dungeon master

what kind of idiot tries to play Zelda II with a wiimote. You need a classic control for that.

  • Lional punsalot

And your still reaching for any chance of redemption aren’t you.

Now it has been explained multiple times by multiple people but they did not enjoy alien isolation, they gave a review based on the fact they hated playing it and found opening doors and hiding from the alien incredibly boring.

You do not agree with their experience and opinion because you think that opening doors, hiding in closets and ducking under tables for 20 hours was fun.

So fucking what. Somehow they should have examined the psychology of every person who gave it a good review because they need to give balance?

What fucking planet do you actually live on?

Two things, show me the good reviews where people give both side and state what rich and jack state in their review, show me the unbiased source of truth you suck at the teet of oh peter the great at saying bullshit nonsense.

Second, the point of having multiple people criticize works of entertainment is to gain different perspectives. Their review has absolutely no need to give a balanced view since there are already positive reviews to balance it out.

I just cant believe how monumentally idiotic you are I think this will keep me laughing for days.

Not one word you say can ever be taken seriously as the truth from this point on. Not one fucking word you say can be trusted or given the benefit of the doubt.

  • Lional punsalot

Nobody’s interested in your imaginary goalposts. All they had to do was bring up something worth talking about besides “urgh, I didn’t like this popular thing”. But since you’ve been rubbing your ass over every comment section, I guess you consider RLM your personal playground. I’m not inclined to agree. The guys didn’t qualify what they said enough, it’s as simple as that. You can waste all the time you want bitching and moaning and making up childish contests, but that doesn’t change anything. You know what would change something? Your mom getting you out of the basement for a while. Learn to accept that not everyone is going to agree with you or you’ll never get anything done. Twat.

I’ll like a triple A title when they make a fun one. They don’t make many exciting triple A titles these days. Am I supposed to pretend I love Assassins Creed? Am I expected to feign interest in Halo 5 because that’s just what I’m supposed to do?

I don’t hate on triple A games “just because” I liked GTA 5, I’m hoping Arkham Knight doesn’t drop the ball.

I won’t apologize for the fact that I’ve simply had more FUN playing the indie stuff lately.

Keep liking what you like, I’ll keep liking what I like.

this was a great watch. i remember when i was young a friend said hey have you played zelda before and i was like yeah beat it many times and he asked if i could go to his place to help him advance as he had no idea what to do. so i go over to find out a ZELDA 2 exists and i’m like this isn’t zelda it’s zelda 2 !!! i have no idea this existed, so i played a bit of it at his place and that was it.

i never did buy it nor did i see it for buy when i was a kid but i remember not liking the changes they made and it was too different then Zelda 1 fast forward many years later to age 18 – 23 i sat and played it as a rom and enjoyed it. i will say this tho, i found that mirror by accident i just went in the houses and went to the back of them incase there was a walkthrough wall secret and i got the mirror. and i agree, games were much longer back then and harder then today’s games cause they were less forgiving.

Or my reply could have been “It’s supposed to be boring, It’s a survival horror game and apparently survival horror is meant to be boring” But then again that’s no excuse for the fact that the game was unimaginably boring.

I stand by my bashing of that game.

  • Lional punsalot

  • Lional punsalot

I’m sorry I just had a lot to say.

  • mmp

I replayed this game yesterday and probably will keep playing until I beat it. The replay value in my opinion comes from the combat mechanics. Every combat is meaningful and if you aren’t experienced enough every enemy can be tricky.

I keep reading in numerous websites that the Ninja Gaiden trilogy was the Dark Souls from the 8-bit era because of the difficulty, but now I see differently. Zelda II is much more alike Dark Souls because of the combat system and, obviously, the frustrating difficulty.

  • Peter Gorman

Is this the real Rich? If so: I love your work. Well, except for that one review, but generally speaking I enjoy them all. I felt the same way about Outlast, because in that game you have to dodge a fat murderer that constantly gets in your way. Isolation does give a little more agency to the character because you’re able to throw noise grenades and shoo away the alien with the flamethrower. I wonder if they’ll ever get the formula correct in a game, but personally I thought this game was as close as they’ve come.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

i thought it was AMC… no wait thats just most of the cast… my bad.

  • Get this crap off my desk!

  • Peter Gorman

Fair enough. I was perfectly content to cower under furniture for prolonged periods of time, but maybe that’s due to my profound love of horror in general. The mass marketing of the Triple A titles tends to give them a “created by committee” feel, and I don’t like most of them, I suppose I was just pleasantly surprised that something so close to the movie came out from a major company, especially when compared to basically every other alien game ever created.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

not you too wipe… oh well.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

    i love Rich.

  • Nerd indeed!

  • RedLetterRich

See, the game never managed to provoke fear out of me. When I saw the Alien I wasn’t quaking in my boots, I was feeling nostalgic for the Alien franchise.

Without that emotional investment (or at least the right kind of emotional investment) you’re left with the stealth gameplay. In other stealth games, hiding from an alert guard is the punishment for messing up. Alerted a guard? Go hide in the corner. The actual stealth gameplay is not alerting the guard in the first place, planning your route, choosing which lights to take out, etc…

In Alien hiding IS the stealth gameplay. The Alien pops down on alert in search mode. No planning, no tactical rout through the map, he just pops down from a vent randomly and you have to deal with it, mostly through hiding. Hiding for me was just kind of a time out where I sat around doing nothing until the AI either took the Alien away, or had it sniff me out. Without the fear it wasn’t tense, it was just sitting in a closet being bored. I wish I brought that up during the review, but I didn’t think of it.

Then add in how the game is about 12 hours longer than it should have been, and I couldn’t stand the experience.

I’m fine with other people liking the game. What annoys me are all of the people insisting that my opinion is somehow “wrong”

  • Peter Gorman

I wouldn’t say the opinion was wrong, personally I just wanted a bit of qualification on the answer. You know, such as “if you like lurking in darkened hallways, crouching everywhere you go, and getting unprovoked attacks from an alien that randomly emerges from the vents, then this is for you!” You can totally wrap it up in an insult or whatever you like, but I honestly wasn’t sure where much of the animus was coming from, perhaps entirely because I rather enjoyed the game. Granted I didn’t have to play it under any time crunches. I’d walk away from it for days at a time until I felt like doing more stealth. I’m also genuinely curious as to what would make a game like that playable. You mentioned that stealth in reaction to a mistake a player makes as something you’ve enjoyed in the past, I could see that playing a bigger role in Isolation. I think some of the noisy machines and elevators triggered an alien event, but maybe it would have been cool to have found ways to mislead an alien to emerge somewhere far from the player, perhaps with some kind of remote bomb detonation. Some constructive criticisms in that vein would’ve been appreciated. Perhaps they’re not required, but I know I’d have been the happier for them.

  • RedLetterRich

yeah, I tried diverting the alien to another area the first time I found one of those power managing console box things. Sadly it was just used as another way to open doors.

Also, there wasn’t constructive criticism because I genuinely didn’t enjoy much about the game. I liked their commitment to the 70’s vision of the future (and said as much in the review) but that was about it.

I could never play older games. I have a barrier that just makes me unable to be any good at them. Zelda 1 I can’t play for more than 5 minutes without dying. A more modern game I would suggest everyone play is Rayman Legends for an example of great game design.

  • mmp

    Great game.

  • I’m dead now… sad face.

where does this barrier start? for example have you played Goldeneye?

  • Lional punsalot

Im still waiting on that video you lying piece of shit.

  • Mike B

I actually have similar barrier in place. And it’s not due any personal ignorance, it’s simply due the natural evolution of the medium and me growing along with it… As in, I’m too accustomed playing modern games to go back.

And to me that barrier has a fairly distinctive lines. It’s when I go back to some of the old games that I personally have played and I definitely know I used to love back when they came out, and now realise that they feel super janky and look rough.

2D graphics medicate these symptoms a bit, but only so much. For example the first Max Payne is right at the cusp of that. Anything older than that which has 3D accelerated graphics, and it’s too far back. With 2D I can go as far back as the first Command & Conquer (with some nostalgia goggles), but not much further.

    Sad, I know.

How is Doom bad in any way? The game holds up as one of the greatest games ever. It got just about everything right and is still playable to this day. It’s not going for anything more than being a great “arcade” experience, and at that it was extremely successful for what it set out to do. Goldeneye actually holds up very poorly seeing how the N64 controller is basically the worst thing to ever happen to FPS gaming. Also the game’s pretty boring in general.

  • Sully

My uncle had his own table top Pac Man in his basement game room back in ’82. I believe that was my first.

  • mmp

That’s a good point with exception of the part about “they have to make games to review them” and the fact that Rich and Jack actually have played videogames for a big part of their lifes.

It’s very obvious why Previously Recorded doesn’t have the same feel as other Red Letter Media content.

Overall the show is a quality filler for the official RLM content. It’s about two guys who have videogames as hobbies and talk about them as hobbies. Either correct or incorrect views about the games discussed, they’re all honest. Not to mention the stream videos which keep the fans in constant contact with the RLM crew (not only Jack and Rich).

So far, the show introduced me to two games that I really enjoyed so I have no serious complains. I think the main problem with Pre-Rec is that it has been taken way too seriously by the audience.

  • Ogrot

If you guys are looking for a AAA title that isn’t shit I’ve been having a lot of fun with shadows of murder Mordor. Now granted the story is uninspired and horribly paced (the game writers expect us to feel bad for our protagonist’s bland white family because they were murdered by a guy in goth makeup and an oversized hat after knowing them for all of two minutes.) Needless to say that is not how pathos works. He is then resurrected by Nihlus from Mass Effect who is pissed off about being dead and wants to take revenge on mordor cause that’s where Saren lives nowadays, I guess. Anyway he is literally using you and emo-arogorn of depression downs just goes along with it cause he’s got nothin to better to do.

The game is using the arkham asylum/city engine only with more murder and parkour and less gadgetry, puzzles, and crime solving. Detective vision is now called murdervision and it allows you to see through walls and highlights items in the environment with which you can use to murder more people. The combat in the game follows the rhythmic beatemup styles of the other batman games but feels more weighty, responsive and visceral. The stealth game seems a bit op as the orcs seem more easily tricked into being baited into traps. The stealth kills seem to have different degrees of loudness that can alert enemies. This is easily solved by running away like a coward and hiding. The orcs don’t fortify or adapt behavior they just go back to there positions with a few more respawning into there ranks. Dingbat Orc AI is made up for by numbers, they sound alarms and bumrush you like nobody’s business. Which leads to some pretty awesome unscripted fights of ridiculous scales. And that is where the fun of this game lies. Murder and mayhem of the over the top variety as you can lay waste to tons of orcs using the environment. Saw a giant troll reaking havoc to the north of you underneath a bunch of wasps nest and there’s an Orc captain with a horde to the south? Well then let’s bait the horde north shoot down some wasp nests when they get there, then hide and breakout the popcorn. Unscripted moments like this are where shadows of murdermore are at its finest.

On top of that is a well implemented revenge system. Every time an Orc kills you he gets a promotion to captain or he moves up in rank if he’s a captain already. You can gather intel to learn their weaknesses and fears, and plot masterful assassinations or you can strike fear into them until they grovel at your feet and agree to become your mole in the forces of Saren. You can then help them move up in the world of evil henching fixing duels for them and helping them hunt. It is a surprisingly deep system and seemed to be more of a focus of the creative talent of the development team than the story ever was. The orcs have an amazing amount of personality especially compared to the might as well be silent protagonist of this game. They act out their own randomly generated stories with or without your interference making for an ever changing and dynamic setting that makes the world more immersive as well as less restricted in its sandbox. I’m thoroughly enjoying arching and manipulating Orc politics than I am playing through the story missions. It is enough to make this game enjoyable, though a protagonist I can get behind with an overarching narrative I could care about would be a great plus.

In short this is the best Orc career and murder simulator out there.

  • mmp

Bad story on a triple A game? How so?

  • “I could never play older games.” Well, not with that attitude. Also, that’s like saying you can’t watch black and white movies… you’re missing out on all sorts of classics.

  • The wiimote is perfectly fine for NES games. WTF are you talking about?

  • How? It’s basically a NES controller when you hold it sideways. I could understand if they were trying to play a SNES game with just the Wiimote (not that you can even do that), but NES has a dpad and two buttons.

  • Wizard Phoenix

Sonic games haven’t been good since 2001 I think and don’t any you fucks tell me otherwise. They’ve all sucked since then mostly because Sega doesn’t know to evolve the franchise. At least the voice acting is better. They got rid of those fuckers at 4kids.

  • TechnoSyndrome

I really like Zelda II. There’s definitely some “how the hell was I suppose to figure that out?” bullshit, but it’s got really fun combat and it’s challenging without feeling unfair. The first time I played through it I had probably over 100 deaths, but the last time I did a run I only died like ten times. It’s not my favorite Zelda game but it’s definitely up there for me.

  • Wizard Phoenix

I was thinking about doing something in the same vain as Percy and other assholes keep sending in Nukie tapes. I was thinking about going on amazon or eBay and buying a ton of anime that was dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment to send to RLM. If you grew up in the early 2000’s you now how fucking terrible they are.

  • Benzo

You think I don’t try? I always go in thinking “This time…” and within about 15 minutes I’m thinking “Fuck this!”. I’ve played plenty of classic NES and SNES games, but they’re just too hard for me. Perhaps I’ve been mollycoddled with easier, modern games… I prefer to think that mechanics have improved to make newer games a fairer challenge.

  • Wizard Phoenix

Why does the jungle remind me of Stranglethorn Vale?

  • RedLetterRich

I can only assume this is a joke, as the Wiimote on it’s side basically IS a NES gamepad with an extra button, and Zelda II did come out on the NES.

  • mmp

The D-pad is tiny. That’s the problem. But I do believe he was joking.

  • Tom Ato
  • The Ghost

Jack, I know you get a lot of shit for reasons I only sometimes understand, but I must say: Your insights here were very, very well-reasoned and thought provoking. You’ve made me want to replay Zelda II, though I fear my NES controller won’t survive the journey because I surely will have flung it across the room by the time I make it to Death Mountain.

  • Brack to the Future

We know how many cackles are enough, 1, but how many Jackles can we tolerate? Let’s see how many times Jack goes “HMMMM” with his face!

  • The Ghost

It’s quite silly to essentially declare yourself an arbiter of good taste and state that two men came to the “wrong conclusion” because it didn’t fall in line with Metacritic. It’s called a “dissenting conclusion,” not a “wrong conclusion.” You don’t get to decide what’s right and wrong in a discourse about something inherently subjective.

  • It depends on the game, a lot of arcade ports were designed to be quarter-munchers, but by the same token they can be competed in about an hour if you play them perfectly. A lot of classic games are more difficult than modern games, but they have things like passwords and saves that allow you to chip away at them. As a child of the ’80s, it’s depressing to me that people who enjoy the hobby don’t give the older games more of a chance.

  • Mark Bisone

At the very least, this game proves the Japanese have a very warped understanding of popular American TV shows:

  • The Ghost

Indeed. Also, I see a lot of criticism thrown at the guys for being “biased.” Are such people new to Red Letter Media, or even the nature of entertainment criticism? Biased commentary is ALL this website does. That’s the point. Each person creating content on this website has their respective likes and dislikes. The hope is that they share those likes and dislikes with us in a way that is both entertaining and well-reasoned. You’re at liberty to agree or disagree with them. But the idea that they’re somehow obligated to dig for positive things in an effort to balance negative things is absolutely absurd.

  • Palpatine

No offence or anything, but almost everyone on the Internet has talked shit about 4Kids. I’m defending them or anything, and I didn’t watch any of the shows of there to care enough either. But Nukie on the other, only like a small handful of people on the Internet have ever talked about it.

  • Wizard Phoenix

I’m not sure if someone already posted this, but it was always my understanding that the reason why a lot of sequels back then had vastly different gameplay was because the medium was new, and developers didn’t know if fans wanted more levels of the same game. This is why games like Castlevania 2, Zelda 2, and Mario 2 (although there were a few reasons for this one) are very different. People complained and franchises returned to their original formats for the next ones.

It’s not difficult to say “this game has objectively good elements, but we just don’t like it”. They started the review trashing anyone anywhere who gave it a positive review. Sure they admitted it looked pretty and they liked the first 15 minutes, but then they eventually bored of the game because it doesn’t fit the type of games they like, and they forgot to point out the important distinction that this was a personal gripe, the game hadn’t actually done anything “wrong” yet.

The game was trying to be a survival horror game with a xenomorph. They mostly didn’t like it because it had survival horror elements and that the xenomorph was there. It leads me to wonder if there was any possible version of an alien game that they would enjoy, considering that Isolation is probably the best alien game ever made (I’ve heard Alien 3 for the SNES is quite fun, but I have not played it). If they leave it the way they did, watching them review anything survival-y will undoubtedly lead to the same kind of lackluster review.

  • The Ghost

“They mostly didn’t like it because it had survival horror elements and that the xenomorph was there.”

Enjoyed the video as always guys. This time I do have a couple feedback/suggestion things to maybe consider in the future:

I enjoyed reviewing a random old game. I think exploring what Pre-Rec can be by trying out ideas like playing old games or other less traditional episodes is a good idea. However, one thing the show could use a bit more in an episode like this is focus. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the show and I enjoy you guys very much, but I would say that it’s been my experience that internet shows and podcasts get a lot of milage out of having a “premise question”. I’m not saying to turn into “The top 10 games YOU MUST PLAY before you die” or anything gimmicky like that. (For the love of god do not turn into that).

But rather I’ve found that if you establish a premise question it gives the episode more focus and provokes discussion. You were close to a premise question, Jack, when you said “is this game historically significant to the history of gaming?” but that wasn’t the thing you guys set out to figure out in the beginning and what that question exactly meant wasn’t really established. So in the future maybe open your episode with a bit of a premise question and then in the end return to that question to kind of give the episode a bit of a through line. Some examples would be:

“Hello, I’m Jack, [And I’m Rich] and today we are going to be playing the game “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and we are going to try to answer the question of:”

Premise question example A: “Is this game a classic?”

Premise question example B: “Retro game: Classic? Fun? Or Garbage?”

Premise question example C: “Zelda II: Should you care?”

Premise question example D: “What’s the best thing about Zelda II?”

    etc etc

I think a really good way to frame what I’m saying is that what this episode of Pre-Rec felt like for me was like “Best of the Worst” without quite the “premise question” of “Which one is Best of the Worst?” (and “which one is worst of the worst? And also we destroy the worst of the worst”)

Best of the Worst would still be totally amazing and great even without the premise question conceit, but the fact that each episode tries to answer the question “Best of the Worst” (and worst of the worst) gives the discussion and episode a bit more of a focus. Everybody at RLM is funny enough that the episodes could just be you guys talking about whatever and it would be a fun/interesting watch. But for episodic internet series I do think it helps to give the show a bit of a premise question just to grant a bit more focus to the episode.

I don’t think your episodes about current games have focus issues though, because the defacto question of each episode seems to be “would you recommend this game?”. However “would you recommend this game?” seems to be a weird question for retro games, so my only suggestion would be to try to figure out a question that episodes involving retro games need to answer as a “premise question”.

But that’s just my thought on something you could do to maybe give the episodes a bit more focus. Overall I am a huge fan, and just to be clear none of my (hopefully constructive) criticism is meant in any way to say you guys are bad or worthless hackfrauds, You guys are great and amazingly funny and entertaining hackfrauds! So please keep up the great work, and whether you totally use or completely ignore my suggestion I’m definitely going to keep tuning in for future episodes.

This is the RLM webzone comments section. Being assholes is what we do. It’s mostly for fun and we generally all joke around with each other, even if we disagree. I’ve been plenty hostile to people on here before and then have later agreed with some of their points and had interesting conversations with them.

Thing is, don’t sweat the small stuff. Insults only work if you let them. I generally insult people on here hoping to invoke a humorous reply out of them with potentially an insult in return. Getting butthurt over the insults makes you a target and further insults usually come. Subverting the insults and using humour seems are generally good tactics.

Also, to clarify, Lokust isn’t picking on gamers, he’s picking on people who obsess over something [games is just an example] far too much and then act better than others and are douches to others in some sort of weird cognitive dissonance dance.

At the time it came out (1987, and it had been delayed for over a year), it was the first great first person perspective RPG. A great combination of combat, spells and puzzles and one of the best interfaces ever.

  • Thanatos2k

Zelda 2 is a game you NEED to play in order to discover that not every game in a well regarded series is good…..

  • Thanatos2k

Zelda is action/adventure btw, not an RPG. Except Zelda 2, which actually is an RPG for some reason.

  • Thanatos2k

Oh also, the “cryptic clues” given by the townspeople had little to do with getting older, and everything to do with godawful translation by people who didn’t know what they were doing, as was common on NES games.

  • Lional punsalot

I started watching sylvester mcoy when I was a child, didn’t really pay much attention, watched the movie with paul mcgan and fell in love with the universe, the movie itself is terrible but his eccentricty, character, energy and style was just perfect for me and began my voyage into watching the every single episode available.

The thing I have found from my own experience talking to dr who fans is that each person latches onto a different doctor as “their” doctor for varying reasons.

You can post the question who is the best doctor and get the expected arguments, or you can ask “who is your doctor, the one that got you watching it” and watch a whole different discussion take place.

Once you find the doctor that you sync with the show becomes a thousand times more enjoyable. This is why its an impossible question to answer “where do i start watching.

In general people now advise watching the new dr who seasons, chris ecclestone and david tennant are both considered very good actors and are massively popular with general audiences. Plus the production quality is markedly improved from the older seasons obviously.

However you might be like me and like the more quirky doctors and not mind the cheap production, in which case going back to william hartnall and going through one doctor at time might be the only way to find out which is your doctor.

This response became quite large by accident i apologize.

  • Thanatos2k

You are correct, but not for the reason you stated.

    Zelda is action/adventure.

  • Captain Matticus, LP Inc.

I did note that the Wiimote is backwards. The D-pad is in your right hand, and the A-B buttons are in your left hand.

Also, I’ve tried playing NES games with the Wiimote, and I’ve got to say that it’s a poor substitute for the original NES controller. Maybe it’s just nostalgia and muscle memory on my part, but I just don’t like playing classic games with the Wiimote.

  • Lional punsalot

Just wanted to say I saw you fighting the good fight on youtube, thank you for bringing reason where even I wont tread

  • Lional punsalot

An RPG is any role playing game, where you are playing the role of a character. Link is a defined character, when you play the game you are controlling the actions of that character and playing its role.

For example dungeons and dragons is a tabletop RPG because you define your characters history before playing.

If your wife dresses up like princess leia and you dress up like han solo for a special treat on your birthday, you are playing a role playing game.

Unless im missing the obvious here.

  • Thanatos2k

Fail. Do not link still gives traffic, it just doesn’t give search engine ranking.

Use archive.today if you don’t want to give them traffic.

  • Lional punsalot

    Call of duty 4
    Final fantasy 9
    Alien isolation
    Sonic the hedgehog
all could be substituted for zelda 2.

  • Thanatos2k

It’s more genre based. For example, if you like RPGs, you NEED to play the stable of the best SNES RPGs (FF6, Chrono Trigger, SMRPG, Secret of Mana/Evermore, Lufia 2, and possibly Earthbound, Illusion of Gaia and Breath of Fire 2)

And so on for other genres.

  • Thanatos2k

  • Thanatos2k

Certain posters like to spam comments like this is twitter or some shit.

  • Thanatos2k

    Wait, when was this?

  • Thanatos2k

Not really. “Playing a role” hasn’t been the definition of an RPG in decades, because then every game is an RPG.

  • Thanatos2k

What? Call of Duty 4 is one of the best CODs, it’s everything after that where it goes downhill.
    I hate FF9 but it’s certainly not a bad game. You’re thinking of FFX-2.
Alien games are not a series, they’re a license.
Sonic the Hedgehog 1? What sucks about that? You’re thinking of one of the Sega-32X versions when they went into 3D and Sonic sucked forevermore.

I actually really like Final Fantasy IX. It’s not my favorite, next to VI and VII, but I played it in the last several years and I really liked the story. Kuja didn’t do it for me as a villain, but I liked Steiner and Vivi, with their existential quandries; Rose of May is one of my favorite songs in an FF game. Now that I think of it, Xidane was a lot like Locke, if he were the primary protagonist; Would you say that’s good or bad?

  • Lional punsalot

I don’t care, I might have mentioned I hate that game.

Fair enough. I was just curious as to why; you’re not the first I’ve seen with that opinion, but I haven’t seen anyone break it down in a Spoony-esque fashion. (though I’ve even found some redeeming qualities to FFVIII, if you look at it through the arty-farty lense)

  • Lional punsalot

The story made me want to punch my wall, the characters and the world made me want to smash my face in to a wall.

It encapsulated everything I hated about what had happened to final fantasy in ff8. The world of final fantasy, to me, works best when they are trying to make a believable world. The further you delve into fantasy, say chocobos for example, the further away from relating to the characters I am. In ff7 this gap was quite wide, in ff8 that gap increased exponentially as the story unfolded.

Trying to cross this gap they created by relying to heavily on fantasy elements they made squall into the typical teenage emo video game loner. But he doesn’t fit the story nor the environment that he is in, leading to constant contradictions in the behaviors of the character and a totally fucked arc.

In FF9 all sense of reality was abandoned in exchange for a childs disney fantasy. The only thing final fantasy about it was the combat system and even that they tried to “improve” which only made it worse.

This is just my opinion you understand, but I actually like the spirits within, it demonstrates what I like about final fantasy, the attempt to create a realistic fantasy. This may seem anachronistic in nature but I hope you understand what I am saying.

  • SeekerLancer

Zelda 2 is like it is because Nintendo wanted to do their take on Dragon Buster.

  • SeekerLancer

Roleplaying still fits in with western RPGs that usually put more focus on character creation.

  • reikall

The more I think about it, the more I like PreRec. Jack reviews it as if it were a film (and I’m an arty farty bullshit kind of guy), and Rich is good with the harmonious counterpoint. Also: the rest of game journalism sucks.

  • Thanatos2k

The fundamental problem is video games cannot emulate actual role playing games, that is, stuff like D&D. Because your character can only do a preset set of actions and say a preset stable of things, you really aren’t playing a role as much as following a role. Without other humans to talk to and react to and a DM to dynamically change the scenarios based on your actions you’ll never have a true role playing game, so using that definition for video games is rather pointless.

  • Regan

Zelda 2 cheated. That game CHEATED. NO ONE EVER beat Zelda 2. NO ONE. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying. Period. No other game could make an 11 year old boy take a hatchet to the back deck like Zelda 2. That game is morally wrong and all of civilization is worse off for it. Damn that game. • Punkster

As much as I like RLM, I can’t bring myself to watch 10mins of other people playing video games, never mind 12 hours of it.
I do subscribe to that channel though, so maybe I am a hypocrite, I just can’t bring myself around to watching any. Even if it is XCOM.
I did watch them play Dark Souls for a wee while, got bored of it then frustrated, so I stopped watching.
    Thanks anyway though.

RPG means you have a party of people, all playable for you. -> Changing your “role” in the game. Link is no “party”….in Zelda you cannont change your role. You’re always Link. That makes it an Action Adventure. RPG would be Final Fantasy or Secret of Mana. Simple as that…

  • Guest

“technically”….. keep trying, boy πŸ˜‰ I enjoy it

  • Guest

still wrong…After your definition First Person Shooter or Flight Simulators would be RPGs as well. Surprise! They aren’t. o_o The same goes for Zelda, son πŸ˜‰

  • DarkFluffy

Alien Isolation is pretty good…If you can efford the Hardware to let it shine….and have no probs with sneaky games unlike some certain people here who “tested” it >_>

In the beginning I think Final Fantasy was intended to be a game with a medievel setting and some classic heroes. Warrior, thief, mage and so on. But that changed long before Final Fantasy VII or VIII. I had not that much problems with FFVII. But FFVIII with its “eternal Witch” thing trapped in a time loop and the artistical high quality ending movie that I guess nobody really understands (Squall dies, Rinoa dies…both live…in a desert…that turns into a flowerfield… all peole are happy..party in Balamb Garden…) was to much. Even if (with some research on the Internet 10 years later) it makes sense…somehow. In the end I liked to play it because of the bossfights the draw system and the cardgame..not so much because of the story.

Most people I think also liked and owned FFVIII because it was the “next gen Final Fantasy” with the good looking characters…using cell shading for FFVII was a problem for gamers in those times. Also the big blue frames. Even for game reviewer. 80% is not that high compared to the popularity FFVII has today…

    still alive I see…. πŸ˜‰

So giving it good hardware makes hiding in closets, under tables, crawling through vents and opening doors for twenty hours fun?

You dont seem to understand my problem with alien isolation, i did not enjoy the game play, the graphics were fine. The game is a piece of shit to someone who doesn’t enjoy the gameplay. I wasnt scared, I was bored and frustrated.

  • Lional punsalot

Aint my definition “son” it is THE definition, so yes they are RPGS, its just that being an RPG comes second to being a FPS or sim.

  • Lional punsalot

Like i said, wiki would like a word with you. Roleplaying games existed before computers “boy”, or were you born to late to receive a decent education in history?

  • Lional punsalot

I love kids that think RPG started and ended with computers, pro tip people were playing RPGs hundreds of years before you were born.

  • Lional punsalot

Oh i did, now i have kiddies arguing that since computers were invented role playing games ceased to exist and were replaced with computer games.

… i feel the need to kill! “Put that nuclear weapon down you’ll take an eye out!”

  • Lional punsalot

I have 800 hours in ff8 on steam, so i agree, the gameplay was ok, as was the increase in graphics. Enough so that i am willing to overlook the story.

But I recognize that the problem I have with ff9 started long before it, and became compounded in ff8 to the point where I just cant stand to actually sit and think about the story itself. I understand it, and I didn’t need the internet to explain it, I just think its a funny piss poor excuse for a story.

And everything about ff9 pissed me off, every part of it.

  • fridoodly

Ah. But you *still* seem to care.

if you watch those three and dont get it. FUCK YOU!

I don’t like sneaky games myself that much but the review about “A. Isolation” was terrible. If I don’t like such game I cannot say it is the worst game ever if it is in it’s own genre pretty good. Imagine a reporter who hates soccer talking about that sport…he would loose his job in 3 secs…

Honestly I even doubt they know about this genre. About Outlast or Amnesia. These people probably expected a FPS or a 3.Person Shooter but not to be hunted themself without any big guns to kill the Alien. Like Colonial Marines in high Quality… If I think Alien and expect “Schwarzenegger” action I missunderstood something…or confused “Alien” with “Predator”

  • DarkFluffy

And in the end it will build cars…instead of fighting in wars… “Cyborg ninjas? Hell nooo!! Would be too awesome!” -_-

  • DarkFluffy

Most peoples here are spammers….search for Zelda related comments…good luck…

  • Lional punsalot

They played one of the games in the live stream, not alien isolation the ones it based on (outlast?) and jay really enjoyed it.

Alien isolation failed to make hiding in closets etc interesting or exciting, the atmosphere and the AI of the humans and aliens were awful, the story was pathetic.

They did not like the game, they hated it so they made a review stating that opinion and you and other like you cant seem to accept that. To them alien isolation is the worst game they have played in a long long time, not even sonic got the kind of reaction out of them.

It was a miserable experience, for both rich, jack and myself in fact, i feel i was robbed by the company that made the game and lied to by every good review it got. I was thankful someone shared my opinion and stated it the way they did.

Btw if I had reviewed the game my criticism would have been even more scathing because I truly hate this game more than any other game I have played. there is a reason I dont make reviews and leave it to people like rich and jack.

I feel this entire game and the positive reviews it was given was a scam, im not just disappointed im fucking furious.

If you watch the debate videos it’s comprehensible to be subscribed to the channel.

  • panzi

I never beat the first red knight you meet so I lost interest and didn’t play any further. To be fair I tried it after I’ve played Ocarina of Time, just to see what else there was in the franchise.

  • dungeon master

am I really the only one who can’t stand to play NES games with the wiimote?

  • Kyle

I think Ganon is still the villain because when you die it says “return of Ganon” which implies that Ganon comes back to life somehow if you fail.

It’s funny that you keep talking about the story of Zelda I and II. Where are you getting this story from? It wasn’t in the games. Impa wasn’t in Zelda I. Are you referring to the manuals or something?

Rich says Zelda II lacked the fun. It lacked the fun of Zelda I? Do you really consider trying to bomb every wall (when bombs are rare and expensive) and burn every bush (when to try every bush you have to leave the screen and come back because the red candle only works once on a screen) and walk through every wall (when walls can only be walked through after you push into them for a second, and during that time they behave like a regular wall giving you no indication that they can be walked through) so much more fun?

    12:06 “It’s not a classic.”
14:09 “Zelda II is a classic game.”

I think the reason Zelda II is so different is because there wasn’t really a standard way Zelda games were supposed to be because there was only one other installment in the series. Platforming was an obvious choice because platformers were the standard thing on the NES. Like every other game for that system was a platformer.

  • wizdumb

I think you need to watch the video again, try listening and comprehending this time.

  • Kyle

Which part of my post do you disagree with? Which part of the video do you think I’m misunderstanding?

I cited my sources, now cite yours.

  • wizdumb

Alright, first off, i’m not even going to bother responding to your first 3 clusterfucks of paragraphs because that is your opinion vs theirs and it’s completely irrelevant and no one cares what you think.

Actually just 1, the stories of Zelda 1 and 2 are in the game, you literally play them out. Do you think the only way of story telling is via narrative? Do you think the story is when some voice actor spits it in your ears or projects text on the screen? LUL.

    on to your “cited sources”.

First thing you need to do, this is important… Look up the definition of the word “Classic”.

Now, lets look at the entire train of thought about said idea and not just taking a couple words from each and comparing them side by side like a fox news anchor lacking all context.

12:06 “It’s not a classic like the original Zelda, it’s not a classic like A Link to the Past, or Wind Waker, or Ocarina of Time”.
-Basically, they’re saying that it’s not a classic in the same way the other popular titles were considered to be classics (gameplay mechanic wise).

    14:06 “It’s a classic game if you’re a gamer”.
    – It’s a classic in it’s own respects that are not similar to many of the iconic Zelda games in the franchise.

-I don’t know what’s so confusing about those statements? Well, they might be… if you’re dumb. I honestly cant believe that needed explaining.

-The thing that makes “classics” classic, is that they have unique qualities that are subjective.

    Let’s move on, shall we?

“Like every other game for that system was a platformer”
    -No.

    – And, Zelda: Adventures of Link is more of a side-scroller than a platformer, granted it does have some platform based elements it’s a side-scroller.

-“Platformers were the standard thing on NES”? What standard thing are you referring to exactly? Who came up with these standards? Where are they written?

-Maybe your next response will be a little more direct and you wont use words such as, “like” and “thing” so often in descriptions.

  • Kyle

I’m sorry my post offended you so personally.

  • wizdumb

    Quitter.

  • wizdumb

And it’s not your post, just your overall ignorance. You’re probably only good for initial pharmaceutical testing.

  • Jamie Kelly

Dude! What a jerk you are! Were you having a bad day when you responded to Kyle or are you always like that?

Kyle, yes, the narrative was in the instruction manual. There is also a preamble at the title screen if you wait long enough in both games. It humors me greatly that Wizdumb didn’t know this as he explained to you why YOU were stupid.

  • VvdD

You sound like you’ve had a really rough child hood. Lighten up.

On the other hand. Sometimes people put things in kids stuff that was never meant to be sexual. and its just Adult’s dirty little minds that fill in the blanks.
