Pre Rec: Quantum Break

Rich and Jack play Quantum Break, a game that functions normally on W͌ͬ͂ḯͯ̓ͯ̈́n̐̓d̉̎̏͒ôͥ̀͂ẅ́ͣ̑̂͌ś͑ͬ͋̚ ͋̒̅1ͦ͆́0͛ oͨͧ͒p̓ͣ̔̈͐͏ȅ̀ͨ̌̄ͬ̅ŕ̀ą͒͌̍ͪ̔t̢iͫn̆ͦͧͣ͒͗̚͞ǵ̇̓͆̀ ̛͂ͫ͆̈́s͢ȳ̵́̍̊̑̅sͧͩ͊͆̎tͣē̢̾̾͆m̓ͫs̑ͫ̒̇ͣͣ͠ a҉̡̪̬̗̳͈̳͙n͔͕̟̖͝d̡̦̀ ͉͢a̠͇̮͈͜l̴̹̲̜̗̫s̯͔̮̤͡o̡҉̤͎͎̪ ̙̺͎p̸̵̯̯̬͇̝̞̠l̮͎͍͘a̷̠̯y͖͚̦͇͙̗͘s̩͇̙̬̠̠̰͠ ̘̮̖̪͡͠g̙͍͘r̢̟͖̟͔̥̘e̵̱͕̣̱͘a̸̖̼̙̳̺̥̟̦͘t̸͏̪͇̜̀ o̸̦͎̮̘̝̬̼͑͋ͧ͌ͧͨͪ͠ͅn̠̲̖̳̭̮̉ͯ̎͟͝ X̶̟̓̂͜͜B͍̣̮̥̹̻̼͖̓ͨ̀̾̍̄Ỏ̧̭͖̩̮̭̹̈̾̀͊̈̾ͧ̄ͅX͔̙̪̟̭̮̱̘̓͋̐̿ͨ ̶̖̱̟͎͇̽͐ͣ̌͞Ō̧̲̋́͌̚̕N̷͉̙͙͂̇̍͛̽Ê̸̘̻̲͙͙̳̘̈̆ͥ͋̈́͛͠͡

    Hello,

    Is there anybody in there?

Just nod if you can hear me.

    Is there anyone at home?

  • Yeah. I’m here

  • AreyouaNazi? Isthatyourelf?

Not enough Shaq meat. Can only give you a solid 5/7

  • spoustus

why did Adele cross the road? to say HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE

  • Sheriff Mitchell

    Sup.

  • Mistah J.

I’ll stick with games that don’t require I install W10, methinks.

  • Nordquist

    You stole my comment!

    #Dark Side of the moon.

  • Adzl33t

When is Ratchet and Clank game/movie review?

I can’t wait for consoles fail, and most games are just on PC

If they get rid of cover mechanics with third person shooters, I see little difference with FPS, isn’t that genre more generic

Is there a narrative focus game that Rich likes? This game is a terrible example, but what would be Rich best example of great narrative through a game?

  • Sheriff Mitchell

Sitting out this round of consoles was a wonderful move. I’m loving all the hubbub about all these stupid games that I’m not playing.

Damn it feels good to be right and better than most people.

  • Adzl33t

I haven’t owned a console since Bush was president, I like playing bargain games for PC

  • JonathanisPrimus

These expensive narrative heavy games are typically third person shooters because film is shot in the third person, so it’s a cheap way to look cinematic. They include brief, unfocused shooting/platforming segments to justify why they’re a game and not an animated movie. You might notice that the games that do away with the shooting/platforming are often mocked as “walking simulators.”

  • Palpatine

RLM will never review an animated movie. NEVER!

  • Percy Gryce

I just received an email from Patreon with the six most disappointing words in the English language:

Red Letter Media posted Pre Rec

  • Sully

    LAST!

    Pound Sign: YouCan’tSpell”Subtext”Without”ButtSex”

  • DoctorKillpatient

Oh for fuck sake, aren’t there any good games coming out on Xbox?

  • Adzl33t

    That would excite me

  • Sheriff Mitchell

All jokes aside, I’ve liked the last two Pre-Recs.

“I didn’t… progress” was no longer ringing in my ears as I watched them.

  • Percy Gryce

    That would excite me

Yes, well, there are chaps who like to be defecated upon–just don’t count me among their number.

  • Adzl33t

    That’s a stretch for a lazy gag

  • Adzl33t

    Just say “phrasing”

  • AreyouaNazi? Isthatyourelf?

Dunno why Pre-rec gets all the hate. I like their taste in games and often come to the same conclusions. Plus, they split the YouTube earnings with RLM which helps fund the free content everyone has come to enjoy.

  • Adzl33t

I’m patient, I’m gonna wait for an animated movie review

  • Sheriff Mitchell

I don’t hate it at all, I just think people hating it is funny. It’s such a weird thing to hate.

  • spoustus

personally i hate it because i blame the discontinuation of jay’s quick cuts on pre-rec

  • AreyouaNazi? Isthatyourelf?

Wasn’t that debunked already? Or is this one of those ironic jokes all the cool kids make?

  • spoustus

haha, has someone seriously debunked this?

  • stryker1121

If you own a PeeSBore or NintenBLOW instead of a SexBoxFun, you are a lesser human being.

I cannot put it any plainer than that.

  • Sheriff Mitchell

Oh, so it was you who started the “Civil Bore” jokes.

  • stryker1121

No, but I wish I’d come up with that bit of brilliance. (FYI, I was being sarcastic in my previous post)

  • Sheriff Mitchell

Oh I know. I’m just sparring witcha.

  • stryker1121

This is why we need a sarcasm font. I vote for comic sans!

  • Sheriff Mitchell

    Wingdings.

  • stryker1121

Uh oh, bagging on Uncharted and LoS. That’s not gonna play well in the sticks!

  • Paul S.

now I’m curious what Rich’s hardware specs are…

  • junkevil

If you have any console over a gaming PC then you’re a pleb.

  • Paul S.

haha 3rd-person movie games are the gaming world’s “fvck you it’s january/february”

  • OMNI

Got 2 minutes in (stopped watching) and they start calling people names for wanting exclusives, thus seeming like PS fanbois right away. I wish every game was cross platform (Last of us). I don’t have a PS4 or 3 so yeah there are plenty of games I wish were for everybody, ain’t gonna happen. I won’t play Quantum Break and I have all of the requirements , but I don’t want to have to watch TV to complete the gaming experience. So yeah, have Windows 10 have and Xbox One, won’t play quantum Break.
Don’t need to watch the remaining 18 minutes of Viously Orded.
    Sorry Rich and Jack.

  • OMNI

I don’t hate it, I try and watch it every time but it’s just not good, so you could say I don’t like it. They should just sit there and stick shoes in their mouth for 20 minutes, I would like it better.

  • OMNI

Yes. Mass Effect Andromeda, Doom, gosh a bunch of others I can’t remember oh yeah The new Dues Ex, I’d leave a link but…..

  • OMNI

Just to be fair Windows 10 is a great OS. I tried to go back to Win 7 and I actually went and got an OEM windows 10 lic. Blue screen from hell with win 7, perfect compu experience with Win 10

  • OMNI

I would actually recommend an XBone (Xbox One), oh there I go, let me put on my flame-suit, going to get accused of being an Xbox “Fanboi”. I would recommend a PS4 too If you have all that money to burn. Actually if I could I would get a PS3 to play Last of Us.

  • Sheriff Mitchell

I honestly don’t know which one has more cred anymore and I don’t care. The pissing matches are worse than the Marvel/DC ones.

I’m sure they’re both fine, but there’s not much that really excites me on either console. At least not to the extent that I’d want to drop that kind of money. I’m happy to play the cheapos on GOG and Steam.

  • Variant

I agree with Rich, it’s difficult for me to find much joy in most 3rd Person Shooters (save for games like Max Payne. 3 had a weak narrative but awesome shooting gameplay), mostly due to the fact that they bank completely on the “cover system” aspect. When to me that makes no sense, having a cover system be the central gameplay piece in a 3rd Person shooter game seems counter-intuitive, because the player has an unnatural advantage of being able to see around corners and over pieces of cover without using their actual eyes. I like cover in 1st Person shooters if they include neat features like leaning, and aren’t bogged down by regenerative health. That feels more claustrophobic and can be more confusing, but in a sense that makes you feel like you’re actually hiding behind something as opposed to just entering “invincible mode” where the only drawback is you can’t shoot your enemies while you can’t be hurt. It’s just kind of immersion-breaking for me if I have this advantage and yet there’s nothing else in the game that provides any more function or substance to the gameplay. Then when you bring 3rd Person shooters to multiplayer just gets stupid – the game is then “whoever is courageous gets shot in the face by enemies they couldn’t see before”.

  • OMNI

I’m a STEAM gamer. The thing people don’t realize is that the PS4 runs on openGL and Direct X APIs so guess what, every one is using the same tech. Also games are built on windows PCs, so everyone plays with Microsoft tech.

  • Crixxxx

    Quantum Broken.

  • Crixxxx

I would think it would be more like: “Giant asteroid to destroy earth tomorrow.” But, you’re right, a gaming video that you can easily ignore really does suck.

  • junkevil

W10 is fine, you just have to disable a few bells and whistles. Looking at you, Cortana.

  • Could this review be a cleverly disguised QuickTime event? I was pressing random cursor keys and, at one point, I am pretty sure that I was controlling Rich Evans.

  • OMNI

I use local accounts on my network, so Cortana is useless to me, until MS gets that kink ironed out, so Win 10 isn’t perfect but it is very stable.

  • OMNI

Well if Viously Orded was a game I might play it, as long as I get to defeate the two main bosses Rich and Jack…

  • OMNI

Mass effect was a good third person shooter.
Gears of War not so much, still fun but forgettable.

  • OMNI

    Actually that’s from The Wall

  • Imaf

You hear that sound? That’s 1983 coming back to flush twice.

  • Ren1

    BotW videogame edition…go!

  • Amontillado

Looks like the people that developed this game took a quantum leap in standards.

    I’ll let myself out.

  • Erik

I was in eighth grade once, too. It was okay, but I was glad to move on.

  • Archfriend

Yes you do need to watch it. It was a really good ending.

  • Amontillado

I try and not hear the hubbub, but these people will not CLOSE THE FUCKING DOOR!

  • Ren1

Looks like they took a quantam shit.

  • Archfriend

Video games are making so much more money than movies now! How about that.

  • Andrew Biggs

    Love Pre-Rec. No apologies.

  • Hank_Henshaw

Heretic II was a third person shooter, but it was good. Max Payne was pretty decent too. The GTA games have a heavy third person shooter componet to them. The real problem are these console-centric “tactical” third person shooters that are Gears of War clones. Those suck.

  • bhlaab

The reason these games are third person shooters is because shooters are the ‘comic book movie’ of video games and they also want you to be able to see their protagonist at all times.

  • Percy Gryce

The way things are going, I’d be disappointed if a giant asteroid doesn’t destroy earth tomorrow.

  • There should be an episode of Quantum Leap where Sam jumps into the body of one of the developers and helps them to overcome the personal issues that are preventing them from producing a decent game.

  • frankelee

Shouldn’t grown men find something to do besides play video games? Like say, making 8 hour long critique videos of children’s movies.

  • grunky_peep

Are you going to blame the death of the new year stream on prerec, too?

But whatever you do, don’t place the blame on you. Blame it on prerec, yeah yeeeaaah

  • junkevil

Those are all cross platform titles as well, so it doesn’t matter what system you have, you have the option to play these games. I’m pretty excited for the new DX, and mildly optimistic about the new ME. I can’t seem to care about the new Doom game though.

  • fred

It’s because the cover system is cheap an allows for lazy map design.

  • fred

It’s been that way for a while. Vidya games have implemented the same mechanics since their fruition in the arcades.

  • fred

I guess we still can’t link but you can watch — Rich builds a PC (Part 1)
    on the youtubes.

  • fred

I like the way they freely insult fanboy gamers for their shit taste.

  • fred

I blame the Bengazi scandal on Pre-Rec.

  • fred

It’s that internet mentality of picking innocent things to despise despite real world assholes.

  • fred

    no

  • fred

u don’t have tu watch it

  • Percy Gryce

Oh, but I do. I’m contractually obligated to ogle every turd that Mike & Jay drop on that webzone. It’s in the terms of use. Check it out.

  • fred

ok – whatever gets the ad money.

  • Torgo’s Giant Knees

I think you’re onto something. Some developers have claimed that locking into sub-par frame rates makes games “more cinematic.” But, judging by the video, Remedy may have gone too far in a few places.

  • Torgo’s Giant Knees

I blame the discontinuation of Game Station 2.0 on Pre-Rec. Also, AAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIDS.

  • Percy Gryce

You wanna see hate? Look at the reaction to Mr. Plinkett–The Animated Series. I loved that quirky combination of Philosophy Cliff Notes, shit animation, old-timey radio bits, and loops of Mike Stoklasa’s mellifluous voice. But all the haters drove that earnest young man out of show business and back to the Antipodes, where he was murdered by a wallaby in his bed.

  • Mark Bisone

    Remember this one, Percy?

    http://redlettermedia.com/mr-plinkett-the-animated-series-plinkett-goes-on-a-date/#comment-992264478

And that was before Shawn read aloud my awful comment on a video. I was doubly humbled, but didn’t say a word in protest. After all, I was wrong, and deserved to get called out. I needed to take the plankett out of my own eye, you might say.

  • Percy Gryce

I do indeed remember that. As @now_i_get_it:disqus wrote, very classy.

But I love Shawn’s reading your comment. At least he knew how to incorporate his adoring commenters into his art.

  • OMNI

Yes, cross platform all the way

  • OMNI

    I will, later on sometime.

  • Aela

Windows 10 is shiiiiit for all game performance from my experience. Games I get 90+ fps on windows 7 with my 980 Ti drop down below 30 on windows 10.

  • Palpatine

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10 for better computer performance. It’s FREE.

  • The Elegant Flaw Filial

The main character of this game looks like Joel McHale and Chris Pratt had a baby.

    …that’s all I got, folks.
I’m sorry. I’ll do better next time.

  • The Elegant Flaw Filial

So the main crux of this game’s story is that you go around reading other peoples’ emails?
Jesus, the gaming industry is really making the NSA’s job seem sexier than it really is. I bet they don’t even jump through time in real life.

  • The Elegant Flaw Filial

I once had an out-of-body experience while masturbating.
    Now THAT’S what I call a third-person shooter.
(I really gotta stop riffing on these videos as I watch them, but how else am I to fill the void of existence?)

  • impfireball

The protagonist may be straight, white and male, but he’s also not overly aggressive, and he doesn’t have a punchable smug baby face.

  • impfireball

I enjoy a pun from time to time.

  • impfireball

Gears of war is the only game that did this formula well.

  • The Elegant Flaw Filial

Mr. Plinkett: The Animated Series was NOT the best follow-up to Batman that the DC Animated Universe could have come up with. Really odd creative decision on their part and doubly odd that WB entertainment allowed children to see it.

  • The Elegant Flaw Filial

Wow, 2013. A magical year. Things were so different then! We’d been waiting for a month without content, fans were begging for a new Half in the Bag or Best of the Worst…

    …things sure do change…

  • NicCagesHair

That joke gave me but a Quantum of Solace.

  • NicCagesHair

If the shooting mechanics are as shitty in most of these games as they are in the Uncharted series, I would prefer the walking simulator.

  • Joe Syxpac

And if you don’t we will bother you endlessly to upgrade to Windows 10.

Did you upgrade to Windows 10 yet? No? Why not?

You have a month to decide if you like it. You can return to your previous OS if you decide you don’t like it.

If you do decide to go back to your old OS we will continue to bother you endlessly to upgrade to Windows 10 at no extra charge.

  • John Feverprice

They should get exited about ball games so much they would cause serious property damage in a fit of primal rage and physically assault fans of the opposing team if their team does not win. You know, like normal adults.

  • plateorplatter

    You’re sacked!

  • IRONMANAustralia

Where’s my ‘Captain America: Civil War’ review you slack fucks?!

It’s been out for like … hours or something.

    Get your fucking shit together!

  • Evil Octopus

I agree. In general PreRec is not very good but does have a few great moments/streams/episodes mixed in. The biggest problem to me: Rich and Jack try too much to mimic Mike and Jay reviewing movies and it doesn’t work. I still remember the stream of Darkest Dungeon where Rich states “this is a game where you just spam the same button” which is not only inaccurate but impossible based on game mechanics. Those type of factually incorrect statements really turn me off to their discussion and opinions as they don’t know what their talking about. I also wonder how Jack dislikes the above interactive story game… but likes FireWatch… an interactive story game. So inconsistent.

  • Now I Get It

I remember that, but vaguely. Funny how my comment feels longer ago, to me, than the matter that Bisone was putting right.

On a completely irrelevant but – bonus! – potentially divisive note, did you know that Nick Searcy is directing a movie on Kermit Gosnell? Or that Gavin McInnes used Searcy as an example in his recent “How to understand the 14 different groups on the Right Wing”- CF. YouTube @ ~13:13 – which also alludes to but does not mention Steve Sailer.

  • Percy Gryce

I was ignorant of all those things. I will review and revert to you.

  • Paul S.

    Thanks!

  • Embodied

bullshit and bullshit. You can do things in 3rd person you cannot do in first person. That’s why it’s necessary. But if the game is bad the perspective won’t save the game either. About your comic book thing: go see a doctor.

  • Now I Get It

    …Cliff Notes…mellifluous…Antipodes…wallaby…

Wow, that is so inside baseball. Now do Garmint Gilchron. Using Sabermetrics.

  • Harry Butters

The Last of Us is a lazy 3rd person shooter… Gimme a break.

  • Amontillado

That would be a very special episode of Quantum Leap, where Sam contemplates the merits of suicide as he is torn between the marketing department and finance department, imbibing liquor and guzzling pills as he feels his creative freedom is ravaged by the dirty mits of money executives.

  • The Loon

Comparing The Order to The Last of Us and Uncharted? Go home Rich you’re Space Cop

  • grunky_peep

What kind of CPU/RAM situation are we talking about

  • Joe

I liked this video. Thanks for making videos Jack/Rich.

  • Joe

Yeah he did paint with a pretty wide brush there.

  • Joe

I think it was more about how 3rd person shooters a vehicles for story based games more than how every game he mentioned was lazy/bad, but I’ll concede he didn’t make that point too well.

  • Joe

Rich talking about X-COM is my best Rich.

  • Kawaii as Fuck

Yes, The Last of Us is just a typical third person shooter, it’s not like a good percentage of the game was focused on stealth or anything.

  • Kawaii as Fuck

Amazing how literally almost a decade later there are games using the same basic mechanics.

  • impfireball

Except that gears actually had ways of making the levels different, and at the time, I remember feeling how it would’ve been super repetitive otherwise.

So even back then, they knew that they had to do it right.

  • Thanatos2k

The PC version was so incompetent they forgot to include a quit button. You had to literally kill the process because they did not include any way to quit.

  • Kirke

Well I played all R&C games on ps2 and of course bought the ps4 remake. I loved it.
    How’s that for review?
Imagine it said in Rich’s voice.

  • Fried Liver

To take it way back, Resident Evil 4 was a third person shooter (probably the best third person shooter ever made), and it was a hell of a game, maybe the best-reviewed of 2005.

  • Now I Get It

Hears three chimes that signal D.H. Holmes is closing for the day.
Makes to close Big Chief tablet, but sketches a noose, instead,
    then a revolver,
then a little box above the caption “gas chamber,”
Scratches the side of the pencil back and forth across the paper,
    then writes “APOCALYPSE.”
    Discards tablet.
    Reaches for rubber glove.

    Store detective takes notice.

  • Charon

I’m so surprised this thread has less than a hundred and fifty comments. 0_0

I played Quantum Break at a friend’s house – 15 minutes into the intro sequence, we got bored and walked away from the paused game – and it sat, unplayed, for 3 hours.

  • Variant

No, imo, Mass Effect was a good RPG. I wasn’t a fan of the series but I’m pretty sure what they were going for was depth in story choices/character development (how well they succeeded is up to anyone who played it all the way through). Actually the subpar third person shooter elements is kind of what prevented me from getting into the game. If I don’t get to create my own character in an RPG I at least need some depth in the gameplay to compensate, and I just remember turning Mass Effect on and it’s like “you’re this guy, you’ve got a mission to do, go shoot some aliens”, and I was like “oh cool let’s get right down to it”. But then it just felt kind of toothless, so I didn’t play for very long.

  • Michael Tuthill

I stopped watching after they started bagging on The Last of Us. That’s probably one of the best written, voice acted, and fun to play linear stories in over a decade. It’s a survival game with mini puzzles but the third person/action/story are so seamless that you never feel pulled out of the action and exploration.

Very pretentious to bag on a game simply because of the “over-the-shoulder” view.

  • Embodied

Jack and Rich literally dig their own grave with their critic on the view.

  • David Martin

I hated that game. It had horridly tedious game play just like uncharted. Looks beautiful and had a good story but I didn’t even get to the end because the gameplay fucking sucks. Anyone who thinks that game is ‘fun’ is beyond my understanding, or just bought into the hype machine. Also, people have different opinions, get over it,

  • David Martin

the most basic stealth imaginable, aka wait around and then run to the next hiding spot.

  • David Martin

yeah because expressing an honest opinion is tantamount to death.

  • Embodied

Nothing wrong with honesty but they still talking shit. And not the first time.

  • Kawaii as Fuck

Considering you’re just a bearded dude in a plaid shirt and not Solid Snake or Sam Fisher, what else would you be able to do?

  • Frank Lovejoy

Right, and none of those things are subjective, are they? It’s impossible for anyone to have a valid yet different opinion from yours? It’s almost like the type of person who says “I stopped Xing after comment Y triggered me!” is a whiny useless bitch or something.

Last of Us, in my opinion, was an okay but extremely overrated game. The story was terrible, largely relying upon ephebophilia (there’s a reason they had Ellie find a porn magazine, beyond the obvious gay pandering they continued with the expansion). And the gameplay never evolved. In fact, it devolved. In the beginning you could stalk the enemies and pretend it was a good stealth game. But once the mushroom-head guys became the main enemy it was just tedious and repetitive. It was yet another lackluster third-person shooter that largely made no sense – just like in Uncharted it’s idiotic for there to be random bad guys standing around in ruins you spent a lot of time clambering around to get into.

Also, look up the word ‘pretentious’ before attempting to use it again.

  • Michael Tuthill

Struck a nerve did I? You sure showed me dude. It is the height of pretension to lump a game into a negative category because of something so arbitrary as the camera’s point of view. But thank you for re-iterating my point. Get over yourself.
