Rich Evans and Jack are sneaky little spies, sneakily talking ’bout Klei’s…newest Early Access Game Invisible Inc.

    Yes, you’re right … I never leave.

  • Firs….fuck.

  • jaymanxyz2

Th…third? Rich Evans in the thumbnail is perfect!

  • Stupid Wizard

If we nagged them to near death about Samurai Cop being alive, we should do the same thing with Shoji Tabuchi.

Hey guys did you know Shoji Tabuchi is alive?

  • Stupid Wizard

I CLAIM THESE COMMENTS IN THE NAME OF RICH EVANS

  • jaymanxyz2

I have to say, this is probably my favorite discussion so far.

  • lucusfarts

I got it!, When the fuck are you hack frauds going to release the next plinkett review.

  • Is save scumming a viable strategy? Like it is in “X-Com”. Or does it autosave so that you are supposed to lose your progress.

  • ouij

Actually, the cloak rig turns you invisible. You know – the cloak rig? That thing you have at the very beginning of the game?

    It’s pretty easy to miss.

  • ohseanofnoise

    Klee Kai is a dog!!!

  • Here is hoping your suggestions are heard. I wouldn’t mind a game like this with a “tweaking” menu, allowing you to adjust not just the controls but game difficulty in a number of ways, increasing guard line of sight, the amount of loot retrieved, number of turns on the security level increase, typical size of room, etc.

Or maybe something like a map builder so that people could build their own adventures (like an online Dungeons and Dragons).

  • Charon

Some excellent points in this episode. The “early access” model of gaming is great for indie projects being green-lighted, but it is also damaging to the final product. It’s a fine line.

    Great episode, guys.

  • Palpatine

While you’re at it, make an edit of this video and then post in the comments, Kthxbai.

  • Brock

    MOAR PRE-RECORDED

  • Captain Turbo

Good episode. I think the boys are finding their rhythm.

On a side note, is it bad if your poo comes out in cubes instead of the regular poo shape?

  • Stupid Wizard

    MOAR CARE BOARS

  • Robert Fitl

I wish someone would pay tribute to “Star Tropics.” It was this RPG/Zelda rip-off for original NES. Tons of fun, very creative, and ridiculously hard. Over the course of time, this game has become pretty much forgotten, but was still one of the best video games I ever played.

  • fred

Rich hates the game and is a selfish HACK–fuck Previously Recorded!! FUCK MY LIFE!!!

  • GeneralFailer

I bet he will begin marketing Marvel games the very next episode, that greedy fanboy!

  • fred

That fat fuck only cares about “innovative” games; whatever the fuck that means.

  • Palpatine

MOAR DUDE-BROS! MOAR GRABOWSKI’S! AND MOAR MONKEY MAN SHORTS!

  • Robotpals

Time to pour a Big Gulp full of gin, remove my skeleton, and watch a new Pre Rec.

For over a year now, I’ve been quietly developing my own 3D, grid-movement, turn-based tactical game. I’m at the stage where I’m contemplating a Kickstarter or Indiegogo funding drive, and perhaps releasing an Early Access version to the investing public. Just have to settle on a name for it first.

  • Rich Evans! Who the fu** is Rich Evans? Oooh my Good.

  • WrongWithYourFace

In the spirit of the comment below, it would be “Thir…turd.”

  • WrongWithYourFace

Behold! A never-before-seen expression by Rick Evazan!

    http://i.imgur.com/naPQG4o.gif

  • GeneralFailer

    Now that’s what I call next-gen graphics!

Did you ever design for Ubisoft? An old trailer for one of their games looked almost as cool as this. It was something about looking at animals I think. Makes me wonder how that one turned out.

  • RLMkeepitup

I usually don’t notice such things but Jacks shirt looks like its in its 3rd or 4th wearing and Rich is wearing a Freddy Krueger shirt. Then at the end Rich Evans went invisible.

  • Big Mclargehuge

What the hell is that end theme tune with the previously and next screen on it?

    You hack frauds

  • Evil Octopus

Age of Wonders 3. Grid based, turn based combat. You are welcome.

  • WrongWithYourFace

    SPOILERS!!!

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Does he still have his NASA violin?

  • Paul S.

Have the guys tried Frozen Synapse? It’s turn based (for Rich!) but has pew-pews(for Jack!).

  • Chris K

I played this at PAX and bought it the second I got home, I like hard games

  • Paul S.

Some nu-disco synth house. Wish I knew. Reminds me of the last 2 tracks in this EP https://soundcloud.com/shookshookshook/sets/shook-the-glow-ep

  • Palpatine

He most likely does, but we have no way knowing since we can take no photo of it.

  • Lapan

Does this game have the same artist as Transistor? The artstyle looks almost completely the same

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

    No camera, please.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

How do folks here feel about the early access feature for video games in general?

With the exception of MMOs, where every patch is like a mini-expansion of new content, an early access game like this feels like I’m paying to play beta. It feels more like a marketing gimmick than a way to generate income to complete a project.

I also don’t like paying for a video game, only to pay for extra content. In some cases (Like the new Sims 4) the company is deliberately taking out material from their base product, charging the same price, then offering the extracted content later for a fee.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Does cube poo splash your cheeks more than regular poo? If not, then it’s totally fine.

  • Manioc

You guys might want to check out Shadowrun Returns- same sort of isometric turn-based game (which visually appears very similar), with a greater emphasis on RPG elements and some excellent storytelling.

  • Manioc

I generally dislike early access. There have been a number of projects where “early access” was another way of saying “our game is terrible, but we’re pretending like its flaws are a result of being an alpha as opposed to poor design decisions.” You’ve also got things like the recent Planetary Annihilation debacle- that game at one point cost 100+ dollars for early access, and ended up releasing this week with far fewer features than the Kickstarter had promised, despite surpassing the funding goal a few times over.

I don’t think early access titles should be banned from Steam (which seems to have become the premier platform for them), but I don’t see myself ever purchasing one. If for no other reason than I don’t want to burn out on a game before it’s even properly finished.

  • Manioc

Great game, but it’s not really quite the same thing. Much more heavily focused on empire-building, with the turn-based combat elements being rather bare.

  • Mike Jakermen

So i take it Jake picked Mario Kart 8 to show off. I have to say i never had a problem with Mario Kart. At least not at the 10cc races. When you go up to a 100cc or higher. It becomes a pain in the ass.

  • 420HitlersAssGoblin69

Dear Rich Evans, please learn what a roguelike actually is, because you keep making me scream and tear out my beard hairs and beat the earth per biblical mourning every time you abuse the term. Thankyou. http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php?title=Berlin_Interpretation (ps everyone who says the berlin convention definition is outdated is just trying to sell their garbage game as a roguelike when it isn’t and they couldn’t find their way to the bottom of a real roguelike if they had full spoilers and 10 years to try)

  • 420HitlersAssGoblin69

Also you should look into Expeditions: Conquistador if you’re rooting around for more tactical turn-based board-based indie games to try (you play a party of, you guessed it, Spanish conquistadors, in the very early colonial Americas)

  • 420HitlersAssGoblin69

First, there was ALPHA, and the DEVS said: Play this game with thine family and friends. There was the BETA, and the DEVS said: Play this game with thine testers, that they might give you feedback. And there was a FULL RELEASE, and the DEVS said: Ship it. With time the Marketites cried out, “O DEVS! Have you forsaken us? Without pre-release positive press we cannot make our quarterly figures!” And in their kindness the DEVS did decree, that so Full Release was once known, now shall it be known as the First DLC. As Beta was once known, now shall it be known as the Full Release. As Alpha was once known, now shall it be known as Oh My God People Will Pay US to Test Our Games.

    Gaming 3:16

  • GeneralFailer

Well, he had to show Finn that he’s not bad at all videogames.

  • So in George Lucas’s mind, the original release of the original trilogy was all Early Access?

  • thehilblog

This was definitely in your wheelhouse. I approve. Better than before. Very good.

  • Malevolence

I would like to see a review of Transistor, was thinking about getting the game but didn’t want to throw out the cash and get burned unless it is on sale, Rich Evans! It’s up to you to sell the game to me!

  • lucusfarts

You might not have noticed, but your brain did.

  • lucusfarts

Have you been eating legos again? If so its normal and you should be used to it by now.

  • Graeme Evans

anyone know the name of the song they use on the outro? shazam doesn’t find anything.

  • jaymanxyz2

When it comes to early access, I always try to be hopeful, even almost romantic about it. Yet I don’t own a single early access game. In fact, there are many games that I have decided not to buy because they are in early access. Perhaps I’m being a little foolish, but I just can’t bring myself to buy an incomplete game.

  • lucusfarts

You seem to have taken this rather personally fred, why dont you take a knee and breath in and out. look out at the lake and calm the fuck down,

  • jaymanxyz2

Dang…I think I remember someone linked to the song one time. I’ll do some digging.

EDIT: I found it…..thanks to Mitchell Taco Nash and Daniel Bakke:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kBhbseGOq4&feature=youtu.be

  • lucusfarts

You seem like a pretty hyperbolic and overly petty individual, welcome to rlm we will set you up a booth.

  • jaymanxyz2

    Haha, good one.

  • lucusfarts

To me early access is beta testing, the only game I ever did early access for was ff realm reborn, what I got was a week of trying to log into the game only to watch the login servers topple like dominoes and be “rewarded” for my waste of time with a weeks free game time. So in essence I spent money on regular game time plus a weeks frustration.

After that I vowed never to pay for early access, or to play beta access ever again. I want to play games, not test them,

  • lucusfarts

You mean you went outside? In like the air? with people? Brave man.

  • jaymanxyz2

    Look above!

  • lucusfarts

You might not have noticed, but your brain di…didnt I already use this comment on this video…d

  • lucusfarts

Thats the im-smug0because-ive-had-sex-with-two-hookers-while-snorting-coke-off-a-tramp face, I would know it anywhere. Fame has gotten to his head.

  • lucusfarts

“an-an-an-an-an-an-an-a CLOSE THOSE MOTHERFUKCING DOORS” Cameron tabuchi 2014

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

At first I thought you said im-smugobecause-ive-had-sex-with-two-hookers-while-snorting-coke-off-a-trampoline.

    Carry on.

  • lucusfarts

trampoline would have actually worked better, touche domo, touche.

Also the more I look at the gif the more rich looks like the ghostbuster guy, the crazy one that believes in crystal skulls from space.

  • Daniel Nguyen-Phuoc

That’s a greaaat game. Rich would love that.

  • Graeme Evans

    thanks mate

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

For which we will pay dearly for the rest of our lives.

  • WrongWithYourFace

Ah, a true innovator… Way ahead of his time, that man.

Should I say: George Lucas used Early Access before it was cool?

  • Ugh

I enjoy the editing in these. Yes I do.

  • Ugh

But trampolines have endless tiny little holes… I don’t see how that would work better. Then again, when most people discus laying into hookers and doing lines off body parts, they aren’t serious. Most people just haven’t lived.

  • Good job guys. Very enjoyable! More turnbased strategy please! Feel free to show more of the actual gameplay. I thought there was too many short clips. Otherwise perfect.

  • Taco could make some serious money on Redletterknowlage.

  • I still have nightmares that he’ll find his way to a directors chair.

  • Palpatine

You really think his “personal films” will be that bad?

  • Outstanding production work Jessi. You shoved these frauds into Plinkett’s house.Half in The bag continuity is now even more fucked up then usual.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Me: “I’m gonna watch more RLM content tonight.”
The Spouse: “But you just watched Pre-Rec.”
Me: “Yeah, but I need projectile vomiting and airplane pornography for children to continue living.”

  • Go fuck Hitler you weed loving Goblin ass.

  • lucusfarts

Such a large amount of magenta CGI in this video, including jakes purple space laser pew pew time. Im guessing rich mike “borrowed” them from wharf when he was at the star trek convention. THIEFS.

    Over.

  • Hank_Henshaw

It’s been a while since Episode III, what’s held him from doing those smaller films? Not enough cash to fund the movies? (Red Tails doesn’t count, does it?)

  • All I gotta say is I’m not paying to be a beta/alpha tester of games that in most cases aren’t interesting enough to warrant putting in faith towards it.

  • Your spouse needs some Jesus in his life.

    http://i.imgur.com/kfgoLwW.png

  • Palpatine

He uses to cash used to fund his movies to fill his swimming pool up with. Plus, I think that you can’t use a giant blue/green screen room on smaller films.

  • Bhazor

An interesting point about Xcom and the turn based strategy renaissance. For me it wasn’t Xcom Enemy Unknown that triggered the re-surge it was the reveal of Xcom as a first person shooter. This provoked so much anger a lot of small studios were like “Huh? I didn’t know so many people liked those games….” combine that with the rise of Kickstarter and suddenly a seemingly dead genre is brought back to the mainstream.

It was such a strong reaction in fact that 2K hastily greenlit the Firaxis made Xcom game and essentially buried the original Xcom remake. This original then vanished for like 2 years before being farted out as third person quasi-tactical shooter The Bureau.

  • lucusfarts

THOSE ARE ALL PERFECTLY VALID POINTS AND IM NOT SURE WHY IM SHOUTING AT YOU MADAM. HAVE A NICE DAY.

  • lucusfarts

  • My ex wife

Does your first sentence not make sence or am I developing dementia?

  • lucusfarts

Doing them would prove hes been a hack fraud for twenty years excusing his badness with flimsy fantasies of scripts he “wants” to make instead of the pile of festering shit hes been apparently “forced” into making and throwing at us since empire.

  • Palpatine

No, I thinks I’m the one going crazy.

  • lucusfarts

What if you cover the trampoline with clingfilm first?

  • lucusfarts

you think in such two dimentional ways.

  • lucusfarts

    Always the first to come…

  • fskn

It was a bit hard to understand what was going on into those short clips. Maybe longer clips would help? Narration? Text overlays? Rich Evanseses laughter loops?

  • lucusfarts

canon has been broken ever since rich mike appeared as a construction worker and they all forgot that they werent supposed to know each other. Also since rich became rich mike, thats when the problem became terminal and all semblance of continuity and separate universes collapsed in on its own lack of internal logic or reason.

    over.

  • Stupid Wizard

Hey did you know that Shoji Tabuchi is alive?

  • lucusfarts

No I did not, do you think if we find him we can splice him with the remaining dna of cameron mitchell and see if the result is as awesome as I imagine?

  • You’re not saying that Taco is a minute man, are you?

  • lucusfarts

I am not saying a lot of things. However I may be implying them,

  • Will you close the fucking door, -or, -or, -or, -or?!?!

  • lucusfarts

You been a spendingsa too mucha time with jar jar

  • Palpatine

Wesa gunna go tru da planet core!

  • Palpatine

Jar Jar says going through the planet core is bad bombin’!

  • Palpatine

Now we just need Boss Nass to give us una bongo.

  • LaFresque

I know you guys will review the game you feel like it, but if by any chance whatsoever you guys decide to, I dont know, give a listening to our suggestions, I would recommend Penumbra: Black Plague. Great, great game!

  • Ogrot

Rich and Mike were different people! Whaaaaaaat!

  • Ogrot

Rich don’t know anything about no goblins.

  • lucusfarts

No thats the thing, its been an illusion the entire time, mike never existed hes just been a reflection of rich in a mirror with a beard painted on. Its all been cleverly covered up with camera work but you have seen through the matrix.

You may be our savior ogrot.

  • Ogrot

How about Midi Fuckin Evil Race War Simulator: The Horsepacolypse Edition.

  • Ogrot

Whoa there. Last time you fed me that line you offered me some pills and I took the one that you said would allow access to like my rabbit hole or something. And then I like blacked out and woke up in like some kind of space dumpster, sore and covered with what I believe to be anal lube. And then the movies that followed that one just figured out more ways to get deeper up its own ass. And then you sent me a text saying I might have AIDS.

    Now everything sucks.

  • Michael Collins

Probably the most thought out episode yet, I agree with both of them as far as early access goes, tend to side with Jack, but for different reasons.
Not interested in the hype surrounding games, just care if a game is good or not.

  • lucusfarts

Yes, good, good just as I foresaw…but this time it will be soo much different there might not even be lube.

  • Sadly these hacks don’t care for horror games.

  • jaymanxyz2

They really did just say that on the stream.

Did you read the stream too? What’s that on another tab over there, is that the stream?

  • blau

    heheheh Jack wants “full release.”

  • lucusfarts

he likes them to finish first before he will pay them.

  • Noah R.

  • blau

He hates when they finish prematurely.

  • Syrophenikan

Am I the first of what will no doubt be MILLIONS of people using the Rich Evans Smiles avatar?

  • Palpatine

Hey pal, I do the forseeing around here!

  • lucusfarts

Only if jake can hold two space bazookas one in each hand

  • Noah R.

    xD

  • Hank_Henshaw

    .

  • Palpatine

Jake? Who’s that? Is he a new RLM member? Is it Jake from State Farm?

  • lucusfarts

hes from A farm, is that close enough?

  • Palpatine

Is he the director of “Farm Safety, Family Style”?

  • lucusfarts

    No, he is not.

  • Stupid Wizard

    What is this bullshit?

  • Noah R.

A video released by RedLetterMedia starring Rich and Jack. Our heroes discuss their opinions on a video game which is still in Early Access.

  • Stupid Wizard

You never reload the page do you?

  • Noah R.

    Maybe…

  • Stupid Wizard

What the fuck are you talking about?

  • Palpatine

No, you see, he was doing, like, a thing. Where he’s pretending not to know Jack’s real name.

  • lucusfarts

Definitely your best Pre-Rec yet, keep it up.
“That’s some console shit.” “That shit is console, ya’ll!”

  • Although I hesitate to say this because I am on record as deploring the watching of other people’s playing video games, I do agree that better examples of their game play of this game were in order.

  • Zounds, your gif has given me an idea–an idea that I hope RLM will exploit as hard as Ray Rice throws an elevator punch (too soon?):

  • Even more on topic, dude was in Classic Trek:

  • Gene Parmesan

Rich can’t get enough of grid based, XCOM, Invisible Inc… Checkers.

  • Mark Bisone

Not sure I can afford to add Midi music to this game. Might have to add an additional 20k to the Kickstarter.

  • Also even more on topic, this guy was their first choice…http://www.angelfire.com/ca4/sarahdouglasp2/1hNOnthedestroyer2.jpg

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

“Early Axe-sex” is the kind of kinky shit that Mr. Plinkett is into.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

I’m not worthy enough to use the Rich Evans Smiles avatar.

    I’m also really lazy.

  • anon

Final Fantasy Tactics, Advanced Wars, and Fire Emblem; X-com didn’t bring the genre back. Just buy a gameboy and enjoy.

  • Aw, man, you’re harshing my mellow with your “fact-based” approach to celebrity-death watch.

  • Stupid Wizard
  • Stupid Wizard

    Now you’re %100 sexier

Admit it Wizard, you have a “thing” for NoCussing’s avatar.

  • snot house

Horrible. Rich, your opinions are shit as always. Jack, you’re as obnoxious as ever. Stop making videos.

  • Drain

I’m glad they covered this, as it looks like a fun game. Finding good turn based games is still hard. While it’s not a totally dead genre like it was a few years ago… it’s still a barren one. XCOM and Shadowrun Returns are about all there is on the market if you don’t dive into the Early Access domain hoping to find a good project.

  • Joe

Really liked this video. Before I’ve given some hopefully constructive criticisms to previous “Previously Recorded” episodes because I’m a fan of the show and try to give useful feedback, but this episode I’ve got absolutely no criticisms whatsoever.

Tonally on point, solid editing, good mix of humor, discussion, and everything else. Great work guys.

  • lucusfarts

“I don’t like these videos therefore they shouldn’t be made even if hundreds, maybe thousands of others do like it”

    just sayin

  • lucusfarts

“im an aussie”, “im the top sniper in the us” lolwat

Also hes a fucking charisma vacuum with the reading ability of a 5 year old.

  • Punkster

I really enjoyed this one. Mostly because of the interesting discussion regarding the Steam Early Access content.
I agree with Rich on how it is a good thing, but Jack has got a point too, because for every FTL, there are 10 Early Access games that are just terrible.

Some games I’ve heard are just awful and do not justify the entry price. The system apparently needs some sort of regulation.

Loved the stealth move by Rich Evans, must have the footsteps of an angel and the speed of the wind to pull that shite on Jack? (or editing skills)

    Good show.

  • All of his personal films are my personal favorites!

  • Palpatine

So is “Howard the Duck” your favorite? And I know he didn’t direct it, but still.

  • DeColonise

Nice! I had never heard of this game before but I too am enjoying this kind of games quite a bit. Thx for a nice episode!

  • DeColonise

Final Fantasy Tactics might be one of the best turned based RPGs of all time. Played it like mad when it was out on Playstation and love the DS release of FFT as well.

  • Welcome Back Otter

Jack’s right about games you keep thinking about. As a kid I was stuck in a room in Head Over Heels on the C64. Gave up. Next morning, still in bed, the solution popped into my head. Great game.

  • Wait you mean this isn’t done satirically?

  • GeneralFailer

You seem to confuse Early Access with Greenlight. EA has its own list of failures.
Air Control was complete, comrade. Do any of the games you’ve ever played have a Killjoy mode™? Nope!

  • WrongWithYourFace

    He’s, like, doing a thing.

  • lucusfarts

It would have worked if the guy had been screaming the whole thing out, calmly saying it like a politician. meh.

  • Punkster

I didn’t, I watched videos on the internet and I thought they said these were early access.
The one you mentioned “Air Control,” which I seem to remember it being Early Access, so it obviously was my mistake there too comrade.
Thanks for pointing out my mistake, I do enjoy that in the comment sections.

  • Rene Belloq 12 inch Figure

Redlettermedia needs to invest in a good graphic designer.

  • John Krzeminski

I sort of agree with Jack about early access and all of that. Seems like these games get funded, but since they’ve made the money, they are much less motivated to completely finish them. By the time the game is actually finished, people have had their taste of the game and are done with it, and they don’t care about the full release unless a big part of the game is kept out until completed. At the same time I agree with Rich that it gives smaller groups a chance to put out creative games we wouldn’t normally see.

My intense love for Rich Evans has escalated since his well reasoned defence of Early Access, Original XCom and turn-based love. GO RICH! <3

Also love this pre-rec series, having the back and forth between Jack and Rich makes it totally – the gamey HITB finally! <3

  • WrongWithYourFace

Now I Don’t Get It. What happened to him?

  • ikdks

    Burt and Ernie!!!!! That’s it!

god, that was driving me crazy.

  • WrongWithYourFace

Now I want to see the same in Canadian.

  • Hmm, hockey: I’m not Canuckian, so I always think of what George Carlin said: It’s not a sport. It’s three things going on at once: ice skating, playing with a puck, and a couple of guys beating the hell out of each other.

P.S.: And you remembered my birthday, which is tomorrow. Thanks–you’re like my brother without the brain damage! And since it’s better to give than to receive, I just sent another package to RLM–this one with some genuine B movies, a Roger Corman compilation DVD, and a ’70s sitcom queen demonstrating another skill. Here’s to the BOTW/WOTW!

  • Shoop, please.

  • Damn, your drunk tests are hard:

    http://youtu.be/unseSFWjuqs?t=1m38s

  • Now I Get It

All I know is that when I got up this morning, his basket under the coffee table was empty name was gone from my list of Followers and Following, and he wasn’t in the yard on RLM’s big board either.

Then, like a true writer, I just assumed it was either something I said badly or something I didn’t say well enough, and began missing him instantly.

    So long, good old chap!

  • Stupid Wizard

Oh no he’s dead. If comes back we can nag Mike and Jay to the point when they have to interview him.

  • Palpatine

You should see the road rage on Coruscant.

  • Now I Get It

A “70s sitcom queen demonstrating another skill”?!?!

Well, knowing Tom Snyder’s “Tomorrow Show” as well as I do, all I can say is I suppose the kids on this site had to learn about Wendy O. Williams and/or Annie Sprinkle eventually.

And P.S.: That wasn’t just hockey. That was the “Miracle On Ice”, your nation’s last unequivocal victory over the Soviets, so, uhm …good on you: at least you won’t be spending your birthday living in the past.

Love to the cats and the sainted Mrs. Gryce. Sorry ’bout your bro’, bro’.

  • trololololololol

I think its pretty nihilistic to think of it in that way. I’m careful which early access games I buy, but of the few I have. they all continue to get updates, even after the full release

  • trololololololol

Id love to see dick the birthday boy do an xcom retrospective of some kind. terror from the deep, OH MY GODD

  • Like Icare

Someone out there has gay feelings about Rich Evans but lacks commitment to go all the way and marry him (ergo 75%) or decency to at least offer him a reach-around (thus waifu and not husbando).

  • Kirke

Dungeon Keeper. First playthrough. Couldn’t defeat a level. The idea came to me when I was in bed, the next morning I slayed it. Still remember both the level and the solution.

  • Kirke

Oh my god! This game! This fucking game! The bane of my childhood!! Never finished it tho I played it for months. Grrrrrr.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

Drowning your sorrows with Molson XXX and Maple Syrup, staring at Rich’s baby picture, is no way to go through life Nash.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

Looked like the way the game is set up made it hard to do, not a video playback friendly game, looks like fun to play, but the stream was like five ambiens.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

They really knew how to dress alien babes back in the day, so futuristic.

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

By the time the full game is out you’re tired of the shit, I’m with Jack.

  • NIGI, I don’t know if I’ve brought this up before, but I was in the U.S. Army in Berlin on November 9, 1989. There was a little event you might have heard of. It wasn’t a big deal, but you might have heard about it: THE OPENING OF THE SUEZ CANAL!

So how dare you say that I’m not living in the past–why, it’s my very home!

  • Now I Get It

    So soon?

  • DanceOfBirther

I recently acquired two “films” that are supposed to make make you scared, believe in Jesus and vote Republican. One has Fred Thompson, while the other has Judd Nelson. I won’t be dumping these on RLM soon, though. I just dumped a big a load of crap last month, including a Betamax tape. I going to fill up some old boxes, so more shit is needed. To the thrift stores!

  • Now I Get It

I remember the determined vandalism of the mob that day, and a lot of soldiers standing around doing nothing about it. I hope you can live with yourself…in your precious past.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Is it sad that I’ve never seen the original Star Wars trilogy? I’ve only seen the “Full access” version.

  • AceRay

American Graffiti is a legit good movie.

  • fred

    Actually, no. They don’t.

This is fucked. Now I’m the only severed talking head left on the site.

    Wherefore art thou, Meester Smith?

  • Palpatine

Does the Jesus one have him flying up into the sky on the cross and then looking at the viewer?

  • Mitchell Taco Nash

You now owe RLM and me royalties.

  • LaFresque

Really? What a shame… I never saw they saying that, but I can picture it. It is a horror game all right, but the story and the puzzles are so engaging that make the game a lot of fun.

  • Stupid Wizard

Rog Rogerson is the greatest man ever to live next to Rich Evans

  • DanceOfBirther

No, it has an evil radio message from hell that possess people, except Judd Nelson because he uses a hearing aid. I’m not making this up.

  • fskn

    They mustn’t.

  • Stupid Wizard

They need action figures. Not graphic designers

  • fskn

All joke aside, that would actually be really awesome.

young rich evans and that creepy pizza place bear.

  • I hope you’re not doing quantity over quality. Unless, that is, you’re hoping that they drop more tapes on Fake Plinkett.

  • I think he was getting a bit bored with the bad-movie thing. I couldn’t even get a rise out of him with some classic MST3K.

What was it Dr. Johnson said about being bored of London–I think that applies to RLM too: “Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”

  • Where’s Paul Verhoeven?

Same with THX 1138. He’s gone mad with power long since either of those.

  • Like Icare

You mean like a Prince or something?

  • DanceOfBirther

I think Miley Cyrus, Olsen Twins and Hayley Mills will have no problem keeping either Mr. Plinkett happy. Besides, I’m not the one who keeps sending their spare copies of Nukie.

  • Touché.

  • Sully

    You’re absolutely right.

Tell you what… I’ll go ahead and split those royalties
    for you and ‘ol RLM.

  • Palpatine

That sounds like the plot to “Trick or Treat”. I’m guessing the Showbiz Pizza Bear doesn’t show up this movie too, right?

  • DanceOfBirther

I can identify any shot from Superman II as either from the original principle photography or from the reshoot. It’s a superpower I have. This is from the original.

  • Palpatine

I’m sure Plinkett has to go out and buy a new TV after he watches one of those Olsen Twins videos. And trust me, tiny CRT TV’s are pretty freaking hard to come by nowadays.

  • Stupid Wizard

Freddy Fazbear or his cousin who works at Show Biz Pizza?

  • Palpatine

It does have a morbidly obese preacher with a big beard who gets carted on a stretcher….. So yeah, the Showbiz Pizza Bear is in it.

  • Mitchell Taco Nash

Canida phased out the pennies a short while back. Hopefully we’ll phase out nickels and dimes soon, too.

  • DanceOfBirther

I hope he didn’t score a negative one after viewing “Toys” due to the the apologia I made for that film.

Just save up 200 of those bad boys (or 190 depending on current value), and then head to the currency exchange counter at the nearest airport and get yourself a nice shiny loonie.

  • DanceOfBirther

I bought the Miley Cyrus movie at a closing Blockbuster. I could have bought like twenty copies, but Mike saying, “Doing it for the So Undercover“, just doesn’t have as good of a ring.

  • fred

People want them to pull new Plinkett videos out of their asses and now you want them to invest in a Graphic Designer? You do realize it’s just them right? There’s no corporate funding or any bullshit like that, it’s whatever money they get from the fans and ads.

Yeah, have them invest in a Graphic Designer, since the designs they already made are too outrageously abhorrent for your delicate eyes.

  • DanceOfBirther

Yes, they should go all Skylanders/Amiibo and make Mr. Plinkett unlockable.

  • Rene Belloq 12 inch Figure

Yes rich Evans dick the bd boy special edition sho biz pizza bear not included.

  • Rene Belloq 12 inch Figure

No dude, I work in the ad biz and its just advice I love everything they do but they’d benefit, and I’d volunteer.

  • Hank_Henshaw

Are saying it because of the kerning issue between the “L” and the “Y” in “Previously”? It also bothers me a bit.

  • Thanatos2k

Jack seems confused by Rich’s good taste in turn based strategy RPGs.

  • Thanatos2k

Jack’s right about early access though – it’s really a scam. Early access and Kickstarter are completely different concepts. Kickstarter is getting funding before the game is even made. Early Access is getting funding for an incomplete often broken product.

Extra Credits nails why Early Access is just generally a bad idea:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmLz00L6CmY

    Summary:
    1. If you are selling a product for money, the product better be worth the money NOW, not some undetermined time in the future.
    2. People playing a broken alpha version of a game destroys excitement for the final product, and most people never return to play it.
    3. People who play your broken alpha version that previously would never have seen the light of day will tell other people how much it sucks, and you’re never getting that goodwill back.

I have some relevant thoughts, if you’ll have them.

In my youth, I was one of the few lucky individuals chosen to beta test for a little game called Diablo 2. Beta access was a featured contest on battle.net – a privilege. I got to play a mostly finished version, 0.90b, I believe. I felt so awesome playing alongside some of the programming and development gods of the time. I knew full well what phase of development the game was in, but it was still one of the best games I had ever played.

That initial, naive joy I felt in my early days of gaming is what irks me about contemporary gaming. I can no longer identify with the local group. The ease of use, production value, and basic understanding of a concept such as “not alienating your customer base” are all things of the past. Like almost all other competitive consumer markets, video games have imposed artificial scarcity on the base it draws from, which, as current sales figures show for the music industry, is a practice in mediocrity and banality. With consumer cynicism in mind, I’m guessing a programmer is probably pretty uneasy about whether or not this half-brained concept that he and a few buddies drunkenly laughed at a mere 12 hours ago should have some sort of early access caveat disguised as a “privilege”, just before the development heads walk into the boardroom for their 9 o’clock meeting.

There was a time when beta testing was something that experienced programmers, artists, and designers did as honest work. Any other involvement in the process was for the purposes of journalism, a contest, or as a favor to an extra nerdy friend. Now, it’s called “early access”, and it costs the consumer $40 to realize no one gives a shit about most aspects of the product they’ve just created, up to and including finishing the goddamned game you just bought. The road to hell is paved with shoddy, muddy, clipping textures and character models designed by first year Ubisoft employees.

    It’s fucking terrifying.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

You never ask a woman her age, birthday boy. NEVER.

I didn’t move to the US until the late 80s, and my parents never thought to catch their kids up on American culture.

I actually watched the Star Wars movies in sequence with Phantom Menace in the theatre at age 19. I walked out on 2, and my friends forced me to sit through 3. I hated the prequels so much and didn’t see the point in watching 4-6.

Around 2009, my husband had me watch the Indiana Jones trilogy (Never seen it) to get me in the right mindset for Star Wars. We watched New Hope onward. New Hope was frustrating because my husband had to keep saying what “changed”, but I liked it, especially the opener. Empire had me hooked. Though I knew Darth was Luke’s father, the way it was revealed was beautifully done and got ya right in the heart. I liked Return, but felt it wasn’t as well made as Empire.

Then we found the Plinkett reviews online, and it went all downhill from there.

  • Now I Get It

My hope is that either he wanted to restart with a fresh account, or accidently de-activated his current account while tinkering with his profile. (I’m afraid of doing just that whenever I hover my cursor too near that “de-activate” button.)

I can also imagine that he had a second account all along, but decided, for whatever reason, to keep one and ditch the other.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

“The road to hell is paved with shoddy, muddy, clipping textures and character models designed by first year Ubisoft employees.”

Great quote. Diablo 3 is wonderful because it feels like a finished product, and I never have to pay for modifications or changes. Played WoW very loyally, but with beta testing and whatnot, have definitely cut back on playing.

The worst offender, at least for me, is EA. EA has taken all that is good in the world and turned it into stripped-down, purchasable download content to blatantly maximize profits, and it sucks.

  • lucusfarts

    Thats great.

  • Old Ben

I just checked out a video of Ring of Red it looks like I’ll have to order it on Amazon. I love to take time and customize mechs as in Front Mission and Armored Core games. I usually make the same three in both games. (Heavy/Blue) Blue Dragon, (Light/Black) Masamune, and (Medium/Red) Outlaw Star. Another fun game that is a bit more lighthearted was Vanguard Bandits on PS1.

    Mwell, yes and no.

He did seem to save his enthusiasm for batman-news(dot)com, where he worried over the casting and so forth, in the hope that the new movie would be straight up good. It’s just possible, then, that his concept of “life” doesn’t include the RLM paradox of taking pleasure in what’s bad.

I know for me it’s been two years and I’m still like Ben Wyatt to this site’s L’il Sebastian: I don’t get what everyone else is talking about let alone enjoy it. But, then, my concept of “life” includes resolving shit like this.

  • A ton of money is being shipped of to you as we speak. Please keep making more.

  • My point was just that. It makes no sense and the extreme fanboyism from my side makes me do stupid things. I would gladly get suckered in. And even if it would be a broken state half-a** game, I would problably still take it for what it is and enjoy it. And when the finished product hits store shelves I would empty my wallet on spot and rush home to play the game. It’s stupid but this makes them a ton of money. And that in the end is what it is all about.

And talk about Parks and Rec synchronicity, I just started watching P&R on Netflix. I saw the Lil Sebastian episodes just last weekend. (On Monday, a colleague who watches no TV except P&R asked how my weekend was. I replied that I was sad. He asked why. And I said because Lil Sebastian is dead. He loved that. Ah, the simple pleasures.)

So, Ben, you’ve hung around RLM long enough to know that it’s the greatest site on the interweb–and the third most obese.

It is good to see he is one of the people who actually get’s the idea of Early Access, and is logical and reasonable about. And doesn’t engage in the intellectually dishonest rhetoric and hyperbole that so many do when they moan about it.

Bitching about Early Access is trendy, hipster bullshit. It’s nowhere near as bad as people complain. There are some few examples of games that have not ever come to fruition as promised. But so many more that have done so, and more.

  • whip

I have to say I am sick of the whining about Early Access that goes on. Jack was reasonable about it, for the most part. Not calling him a whiner. Though he was engaging in some rhetoric and hyperbole about it.

Rich is right, Early Access is a means for which some developers can work on game ideas that would not otherwise see the light of day, as they would not be funded by big publishers.

Early Access is NOT that far removed from Kickstarter, or pre-ordering a game and receiving beta access as a benefit of the pre-order.

You are NOT paying for an unfinished product. You are buying the full product, with the benefit of having access to it in it’s alpha and beta stages.

People who hate Early Access are not required to participate in it. But that doesn’t stop them constantly moaning on about it. Which makes no sense. Unless said people are some kind of arrogant, pretentious people who think it’s their place to save the rest of us from ourselves. To protect us from the “scam” that it is.. in their minds.

Jack’s arguments remind me of the arguments of other strong haters of early access. People who, when confronted by the logic of it, just can’t let go of their hate of it, and keep being more and more disingenuous and hyperbolic in what they say about it.

It’s not ubiqutous. It’s rarely done by large developers with publishers. It is mostly done by independent developers who are wanting to make their own vision of some game that is otherwise unlikely to be funded. To suggest it’s a marketing ploy and the like is outrageously cynical viewpoint.

It’s not selling unfinished, broken products. It’s selling the final product, with the perk of having access in development. Something people routinely do by pre-ordering the next big MMO, and getting beta access for doing so. It’s not really any different than that.

If people don’t like it, they simply should not engage it or use it. That’s all the more input or moaning I want to hear from them. I don’t care if they disapprove, think it’s a scam, or whatever else they go on about. I am a big boy, and can make my own decisions, and do not need them to hold my hand and protect me from some kind of scam. They need to get over themselves and get over the fact that Early Access exists.

But no, they keep crying about it, and lying about it, and spinning more and more rhetoric and hyperbole about it. In a clear case of having a bias against it, and refusing to accept any logical arguments presented against them. You can see it in the way they argue. They just don’t let it go, and keep being more and more dishonest (intellectually) and more and more hyperbole and rhetoric.

  • lemmy101

I do get the concerns, and I have my own issues with how particular devs deal with it, as well as bigger publishers who shouldn’t NEED to use early access. Full disclosure I’m actually a dev who has a game on early access so find it frustrating when people who make Early Access games don’t treat the system with responsibility, but it also frustrates me when people tar EA games with the same brush.

We slave away to try and be fair and responsible with our game and make it as polished and complete as possible before we went on Steam. Sadly a lot of people dismiss us and other games on account of the few that have abused the system.

That’s why when it popped up with ‘Early Access Discussion’ I was prepared for being sad and frustrated, but even Jack’s negativity on it was measured and reasonable. So yeah was very happy. 🙂

  • lemmy101

Yeah not a fan of the ad system myself, so I adblock the shit out of the site but donate via their paetron to make up for it 🙂

The rest of us are looking at this thing from every side we can, its easy to see your point there is a benefit to early access for indie publisher and we have acknowledged it. Fuck you for not taking the time to actually accept that other people have made points on this issue as well, fuck you for trying to blanket dismiss those opinions without actually recounting them, fuck you for posting a shit long post without taking the time to ever address any of those issues other than to refer to them as lies and whining.

Fuck you for every last part of your pathetically selfish post.

  • Ogrot

    Stop your making me hungry.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

This is my complaint with early access vs. kickstarter.

With a game being made through kickstarter, I know upfront how much funding is needed for the developers to complete their game. They tell me what’s coming with my funds, approximate time, and what features are with the game. If the campaign doesn’t reach their goal, then you know ahead of time that your game won’t be made.

With Early Access, there’s no way of knowing what’s needed for the final product to be made. If a developer needs 3000 units sold, but only comes up with 800 early access purchases, there probably will never be a final product. At least with Kickstarter I have knowledge of this.

This is a separate issue for me, but I look at Early Access the same way as those Star Wars toys that were released, where you got the packaging, but got the toy later. Granted, this was for a very specific reason, but it’s never been done again, and there’s probably a reason for that. If this method of product release crept into other aspects of life, people would complain about it, and I think they have every right to do so.

  • Mark Bisone

Yeah, like I said: “The internet version”.

  • Mitchell Taco Nash

    I thought you were dead.

  • Michael Collins

I’m sick of the whining too, was on another site and someone replied to me, and now I don’t know what to say, so quit your whining!

  • Considering they only get paid if you actually click on the ads, if you’re not going to click them you might as well block them (either way they don’t get paid).
If you want them to continue making content you should obviously financially support them if you can and paetron seems to be the best way of doing that.
I sometimes considering unblocking ads clicking on a few and then blocking them again but while that may give money to RLM it’s not fair to the advertises (some of whom are small companies or individuals) because they’re paying for your click even though you have no interest in their product or service.

What you are saying, is that whenever I see that twix advert I should click the ever loving shit out of it to generate revenue knowing that A) I hate twix and wont buy one, ever. and B) they are a big company so fuck them, am i right?

    just sayin.

  • lucusfarts

Here is where you are underestimating the audience. Most of us are intelligent enough to be able to distinguish between the correct decent use of early access by indie developers in need. And dishonest money grabbing use of early access used by companies that don’t need it.

We can tell the difference, the “rhetoric” you hear isn’t aimed at small developers of indie games, its aimed at the dangers of the bigger publishers using this as the next standard model for product development and release.

Some people may not be able to see there are multiple sides to consider in most issues, but most people are savvy enough to see that if say blizzard used early access it would be an abuse of the system, but if some unknown developer uses it and markets themselves the right way, (full disclosure is a good way to go) then there shouldn’t be any issue.

  • That’s not exactly what I’m saying but if you hate big companies (and there are many reasons too) then that’s very sound reasoning.
I’m saying it’s complicated, if you’re the kind of person who wouldn’t ever click on an advert normally.
You either have to click on one you’re not interested in, thus costing a company money (you could dismiss this if you think big business deserves to be fucked over) or you don’t click on adverts and the sites you like don’t get any revenue.
The whole online advertising system is broken but we’ve got to this point because the humans doesn’t like paying for things and it leads to some pretty terrible consequences (like google and facebook collecting your data to sell on to cover their costs).

  • lucusfarts

Let me add to that by asking you a searching question:

Can you guarantee that early access will only be used by people that actually need it?

If you cant then we are right to be concerned about early access as it pertains to large developers.

  • Robby

    Nonsense!

Everyone knows that cats came up with objectivism, which they have then tried to spread among humans through the use of crazy cat ladies for centuries.
Finally succeeding with Ayn Rand, who was a well known cat pawn, singing them praises such as this one she sent to Cat Fancy magazine in ’66.

    “Dear Miss Smith,

You ask whether I own cats or simply enjoy them, or both. The answer is: both. I love cats in general and own two in particular.

You ask: “We are assuming that you have an interest in cats, or was your subscription strictly objective?”
My subscription was strictly objective because I have an interest in cats. I can demonstrate objectively that cats are of a great value, and the carter issue of Cat Fancy magazine can serve as part of the evidence. (“Objective” does not mean “disinterested” or indifferent; it means corresponding to the facts of reality and applies both to knowledge and to values.)

I subscribed to Cat Fancy primarily for the sake of the picture, and found the charter issue very interesting and enjoyable.”

I’m of the opinion that high frame rate actually hinders the quality of a film. 120 fps would be fucking AWFUL. Our eyes naturally see motion blur. 24 fps simulates that fairly well, especially with the shutter speed and exposure film/movies are typically shot at.

High frame rates look TOO clear, in that it’s more difficult for your baring to make it appear as if it’s smooth movement instead of a bunch of really quick successions of still images. The movement looks weird and unnatural. This image comes to mind.

    New tech is always better.

BUT… Same as with digital color correction, 3D, CGI, or even color and sound – those using the tech need to know what the fuck they are doing.

Kubrick used lenses developed for NASA to film candlelit scenes in Barry Lyndon without the use of electric lights.
He didn’t just continue using those lenses all the time – he used them to achieve a certain effect. A special one, if you will.

Same way, 120 fps could be used spectacularly to immerse the audience in the movie. It’s a special effect.
But so was sound and color, once. Or handheld cameras. Or steadicam. Or a zoom lens.

Movies are about escape, Jim, don’t you know that?! By the way when is your Heavy Metal and Battle Angel movie coming out?

  • Stupid Wizard

“Anyone could have made LotR movies, and probably would have done a better job of it.” To quote Jack Packard “I think you’re full of shit” and you are. Only Peter Jackson could make Lord of The Rings. He had the imagination, the love for the books, and a great understanding of film. Also he’s from the real life Middle Earth, if you got Ridley Scott to do it he’ll probably have everything built on a Warner Bros lot. Jackson’s also a pretty smart guy like James Cameron only when Jackson writes dialogue not action related it isn’t cringe worthy.

  • Stupid Wizard

Cameron knows what he’s doing, I’m sure of it. The man spent 12 years making a movie and developing technology every studio has now in order to make it. But increasing the frame rate happened once and it was a failure, the guy who tried it out admitted it. Audiences enjoy different unique things but we don’t like having our minds being visually raped and confused.

I didn’t feel compelled to spend $40 on new content and slight improvements in the GUI. I’ll wait for the inevitable half-off sale that Blizzard will have during the holidays.

You also brought up EA, which you are absolutely dead on with. They produced one of the most disappointing and tacked-on sequels to any series ever, Dead Space 3. The first two games? Brilliant. So much fun. The third game? I like to call it Dead “Pay to see the REAL ending and get an extra gun for $15” Space 3.

    It’s a working title.

He’s from what marketing calls “real Middle Earth”? So what?
Kubrick made one of the best films about war in Vietnam around London and Thames.

Where should they have filmed Star Wars or Matrix?
In the “real” Galaxy far, far away and the “real” dystopian world of computer simulation?

The view he sees out his window when he sits down to have a shit is of no importance.
Nor is his skill, cause every time he takes up another project, which does not have generations and billions of fans, he fails.
Much like another bearded fat director who likes to make movies “better”.

LotR got made because several factors converged – and none of them was Peter Jackson.
There was proven brand spanking new jaw dropping technology as seen in Jurassic Park.
There was the computer and internet revolution of the ’90s and the accompanying tech boom which provided cheaper tech (think of the difference between 1993 computers of Jurassic Park and the 2001 computers used to make LotR) and more importantly – tech boom provided FREE MONEY.
    And more…

It was the time just before the collapse of the tech bubble and the dollar was riding higher than ever, and there was plenty of it to go around.
That’s why the idea “let’s make three of them at once” floated instead of sinking. NOT because of Jackson’s winning personality.

They secured the money for the movies at 1.57 US to 0.63 NZ.
They started filming at 1.95 US to 0.51 NZ.
By the time they were ending the filming it was 2.52 US to 0.39 NZ.
And it stayed around there through the post until they released the first movie, continuing to drop until it was 1.55 US to 0.64 NZ by the time third movie came out.

By sheer luck, the money was secured when it was twice the value and plentiful due to the economic bubble, and then it blew up to 6 times the value while outside the economic bubble burst.

In reality, the movie was probably 3 or more times MORE expensive than its price tag, as that is how much money went into it.
And as we all know – no bucks, no Barad-dur.

At the same time, ticket prices rose by only about $0.4 during the run of the movies in the theaters, BUT it rose from $4.59 in 1997 to $5.65 in 2001 to 6.03 by 2003.
The money invested in 1997 brought 30% more on account of inflation of the ticket prices ALONE.
But since it happened gradually, public never noticed it.

Then, there’s the huge amounts of free publicity the movies got through the internet and its primary audience – the nerd crowd.
I remember web sites about the movie popping up in ’97 and ’98, fantasy castings with Sean Connery in every single one of them, everyone asking WTF is Orlando Bloom and the approval of casting John Rhys-Davies as a dwarf.

Then, there’s the synergy of “the times”.
Osama bin Laden and George W. should probably get a “special thanks to” in the credits.
No way another “True Lies” or “Die Hard 3” featuring everyday ubermenschen fighting terrorists who blow up nukes on US soil or half a New York city was going to be made then.

    Remember the blockbusters of 2002?
Spiderman, LotR 2, Harry Potter 3, Die Another Day, Bourne Identity…
    2003?
    Kill Bill 1, LotR 3, Pirates 1, Terminator 3. Matrix 2&3…

Bruce Willis TRIED making a war movie about badass American soldiers delivering freedom to the oppressed while dying heroically – and it tanked.
Nobody wants to watch that shit yo. Not when there’s talk about draft and blood for oil.

It was the time of high fantasy as escape from reality.

Seriously, my dog could have made a better movie.
Just give him the book and command “STAY ON THE PAGE!”.
Instead of making up crap and ruining the source material with his fan fiction.
    And I don’t have a dog.

Had Jackson been allowed to do with the Fellowship what he did with Return… It would have been another Matrix trilogy.

    As for the dialogue…
    Jackson took epic poetry like:
“- Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!

    A cold voice answered:

    – Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in
thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond
all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind
be left naked to the Lidless Eye.

A sword rang as it was drawn.

    – Do what you will; but I will hinder it if I may.

    – Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!

Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed
that Dernhelm laughed and the clear voice was like the ring of steel.

    – But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund’s
daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be
not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you if you touch
    him.”

And he replaced it with fluff like: ”
-Do not come between a Nazgul and his prey.
Slice. Slice. Fall. Club. Dodge. Club. Club. Choke.
-You fool. No man can kill me. Die now.
    -I am no man.
    Stab. Stab.”

That’s his extent of love for or understanding of the material.
He completely missed the point of that scene and many others.
It’s not about prophecies or being a girl – it’s about loyalty and taking a stand for what is right KNOWING the cost and despite it.

Wanna see it done right AND written into a completely different context?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFvkgfBXHPA

Same goes for the dropping of the endings of Saruman in the original version, hobbits tricking the ents into action and the dropping of “The Scouring of the Shire” from the movie entirely.
Which is the part more important than the any battle in the entire movie.

Instead of a “You don’t get to return to the land you left behind, war came there too while you were away.” the movie ends with “Go to war! Everything will be happy and splendid back home. With tables and beds and women waiting for conquering heroes.”

Out of a story about the cost and sacrifice of taking a stand, with no divine intervention even against the ultimate evil, and still suffering it all because of necessity – he made a jingoistic propaganda movie.
    He made this.

The guy who tried it is an idiot with no imagination or understanding of the technology.
He went to make a fantasy film with tech which would only point out the flaws of his attempt to turn a fairytale about dwarfs and elves and dragons into a movie.

Cameron is an asshole who will with no subtlety hammer the audience into the “reality” of the story he is presenting.
He knows that the new tech is a special effect – and he uses it like a special effect.
    Not just a new camera.

So, you can pretty much bet on it that he will come up with an in-story explanation why everything looks the way it does.
Same way his 3D is not jarring in Avatar because we are told and we are taught beforehand that THAT is how it should all be – because alien world.
And sure as fuck, because he designed it all to fit – alien world to tech and tech to present just such an alien world of flying and giant trees and floating flower-beings and levitating rocks – it works.

Jackson on the other hand took reality and tried to make it into magical fairyland – i.e. business as usual.
But, he did it with tools that show how it is NOT magical fairyland but a construct of CGI and cardboard.

Still a better love story than Twilight.

I get the sense that Baz Luhrmann’s fan base is primarily female. My theory is that they think they’re fans of Luhrmann, but are in actuality fans of his production designer, Catherine Martin.

Well it would be interesting that if every time you won at Donkey Kong Jr. You heard Rich Evans Laugh. In Fact I think they should do a Game were the Red Letter Media Crew are trapped by the Evil Showbiz Pizza Bear. And its up to Rich Evans to save him.

Christ Jack, cool it on the editing, will you? Possibly the most obnoxious editing I’ve ever seen in a RLM video. It’s like you guys couldn’t go an entire minute without throwing some obnoxious shit in our face.

  • Now I Get It
  • Visually, this game seems like it’s difficult to tell what’s going on right off the bat. Even by the end of this video I still found myself confused as to what I was looking at.

  • mmp

I understand that is purely humor, and it’s subjective, but… What was funny about this video? I don’t get it. It had some good insights and references to gameplay and game industry at the end and that’s it. The rest is just unnecessary violence. It looks a lot like a Family Guy episode.

  • Like Icare

There is SOME humor in parodying the actions and the image of the characters, but yes, most of it is just references and not actual humor.

But people still laugh because recognition of a reference triggers the same “good boy, smart boy, have a cookie” reflex in their brain that the joke would upon “getting it”.

    That’s true.

Seeing as how we talk about movies and games, here’s an explanation for why games about movies suck.

    3 Part comment here

I have an issue with early-access games that’s similar to what jack was saying but not quite the same thing. When I first go into an interesting game figuring out how everything works is a major part of my enjoyment. If it’s early-access there are generally unresolved problems that won’t exist at launch. So if I go into early-access I’ll be blowing my first-time wad and still having to put up with unresolved crap at the same time. (I know, I know: just don’t play early-access; it still bugs me since I do want to get in early and maybe even contribute to a game’s development)

In regards to what Rich said about getting frustrated and then coming back an hour later- I’ve been fooled by games before. There are times when I’ve wanted to do something in a game and it wasn’t letting me but I kept coming back because I wanted to do it. But sometimes in my experience it’s a false feeling, I won’t ever actually get to experience what I want to experience, the game just makes me feel like I will be able to.

Also recognized the bronze-skinned PC master race character from Zero Punctuation.

Hi there. I don’t know if you’re still using this account, but just wanted to let you know if you ever feel shitty and just want someone to talk to, you can always reply to an old post of mine and I’ll be happy to listen. I’ll even delete my responses so that no one knows who had the conversation.

It’s easy to say we’ve all been there and that things will get better. It’s much harder to believe us when darkness is stuck inside your head with no one to vent to.

Hope all is well. – D.

They could allow the player the highlight specific tiles or lower the entire environment like in The Sims. Klei eventually implement rebindable keys, I mean, this is PC not consoles. A stealth XCOM-like game coming from Klei is a no-brainer for me.

  • Kyle

How can he say the turn-based grid games were dead? There are tons of Fire Emblem games. Advance Wars was popular too. And what about Final Fantasy Tactics?

  • Kyle

I did it! I found the perfect Rich face.
