Pre-Rec: DOOM

May 21, 2016135 Comments

Rich and Jack rip and tear through DOOM, not to be confused with the the game it’s based on… DOOM.

  • WrongWithYourFace

    First!

    Oh, it’s Pre-Rec…

  • craptonium

It’s a pretty good Doom game. It has the secrets and confusing map design that define Doom, the gore, and it has that arena shooter kind of speedy gameplay from Quake.
It is what it should be, and i like it.
I’d wish for more metal in the soundtrack, but the hyping sound during Hayden’s dialogue in the beginning in the lift, the BFG Division (non-alternate), and Welcome to Hell (alternate), strike a nice cord with me.
A good thing of note is that the devs sped up the glory kills enough that the combat doesn’t lose in continuity when you are going mad, so that’s a great thing too.
The highest difficulty is also damn unrelenting.

  • Mikkel Rasmussen

Liked this episode – I’m gonna have to check this game out. Thanks for the tip 🙂

  • Spoiled Ants

    Yay, a new Pre-Rectum!
Have to catch up with a lot of your streams. Nice closing song btw.
    Keep it up.

  • Amontillado

    So close to first…

    #jippedbyaglitch

  • Amontillado

You can count on Grandpa to always know what’s best.

  • DOOOOOOOM? More like AAAAAAIIIDS!

  • Ras Golubevs

What a great song is playing during the final titles.

  • Variant

Sounds way better than I thought it was gonna be. I thought this review was gonna be full of disappointed sighs. I think that’s just because I listened to Rich when he said “ID Software is, for all intents and purposes, completely dead”. Thanks for misleading me Bitchy Evans.

  • Variant

I can just picture the trailer like the Star Trek reboot – but it’d be the opposite. “DOOM!! This IS your grandpa’s shooter!” edgy

  • tum…

  • Hank_Henshaw

I’m glad they fixed the glory kills. When the first gameplay footage was released, I immediately dismissed the game as bullshit because of those sequences.

  • FIRE-CROSBY

    Shoulda talked about the multiplayer

  • Hank_Henshaw

Rich Evans don’t give no shit about no multiplayer.

  • ChefSammo

I absolutely love this game. They nailed everything about this game. Even stuff outside the game is prefect, for example the achievements on Xbox. They only made 2 achievements for multiplayer and they are simple: Play a match and get to level 5.I am so glad that if I do want to 100% DOOM I don’t have to do a bunch of multiplayer crap no one cares about. So far probably the best shooter I’ve played from my generation. As soon as I get a good PC rig all the DOOM games are a must have for me even DOOM 3 just so I can see it for myself.

  • Rob Peterson

He don’t never give no shit ’bout no multiplayer!

  • Rob Peterson

Rich and Jack rip and tear up your PRE-REC-TUM!
This game is the shit and is everything I wanted – and expected – from DOOM3 but never got.
Worth every penny and every moment you spend playing it. I’ve only taken a small break to allow my testicles to stop tingling.

  • OMNI

DOOM is Aewsome! Hey they fixed the logo, not the way it should have been fixed but…

  • lucid_flux

    Pre-Rectum

  • OMNI

I still play DOOM3. I love that game

  • Markham

Now I’m looking at a Pre-Rec video! That can’t be good!

  • Variant

I had a fondness for it. It spooked me a bit when it first came out (games at that point weren’t really making much use of real-time shadows, even if it was hard-edged and kinda glitchy in Doom 3, I thought it was well-handled at the time) And upon revisiting it, it didn’t scare me quite so much – but without being so scared I realized how much fun it was just to blast things. I found that going through that game once being a little spooked, and a second time not really affected by it were two both completely enjoyable experiences. It may have not been a perfect Doom game, but it earned its place in my heart along with other fantastic releases around that time. Unreal Tournament 2004, Far Cry, Doom, and of course Half-Life fucking 2. It was a good run in the early 2000s for a bit there.

  • FiachSidhe

Doom was a Wolfenstein 3D clone! DAMMIT!

  • FiachSidhe

Seriously though you guys should play Warframe if you haven’t already. If you enjoy games with nonstop action. Space ninja cyborg battle suits each with a different theme.

  • Mike Schwartz

Officially requesting an mp3 link for “Doom It Up”

  • OMNI

I think I’ll reload that one. It’s Free!

  • OMNI

You know your history, unlike Jack and Rich.

  • OMNI

I have to say this s the first time I liked PreRectum. Perhaps it can become entertaining.

  • Fan

Get rid of Pre-Rec. It is uncomfortably out of place within RLM.

  • UnhealthyNutter

You left out GoldenEye 64, that did console fps first before Halo.

But i digress: Killzone 2 had a better single player(and multiplayer) than new DOOM imo, and KZ2 is one of the best shooters ever made. DOOM 2016 doesnt quite reach those heights, it is very good though. Both KZ2 and DOOM are essential playing. I think DOOM is a breath of fresh air in todays current FPS climate.

  • TheVerySpecialK

Your frivolous and unseeming complaints are the only thing out of place here.

  • Do you know what they called cover in my day, sonny boy? They called it the sissy fence.

The only thing a sissy fence is good for is making rubble to throw at demons when they are’t close enough to punch.

Slow aim? This ain’t foreplay son. This is pan-dimensional war

Regenerating health? Back when I was your age, health was something you went out and ripped from the other guys chest.

    etc.

  • Glyph Wright

I can see why people hate prerectum. I personally don’t, but I can see why others would.

  • acapulcozinc

The music at the end is so beautiful. Is it Whitney singing a Carole King song?

  • acapulcozinc

That would imply Richh as a friend. They are not friends. They are court-mandated social workers. They don’t like him.

  • Big Red

Doom it up is my new favourite song

  • DeColonise

Yet another fine review guys. Doom feels very ‘arcady’ if that makes sense. I mean that things happens all the time and you have to move and kick butt as much as you possibly can.

  • tOmy`

Wasn’t a bad episode, I kinda enjoyed it, but it felt rather empty in terms of the information. I know, I know, I can pretty much just open any other review (or Google) and look for it myself, but hearing Rich saying he is an “oldschool Doom fan” led me to thinking he will at least touch the classic subjects of any Doom discussion (map design, BFG, enemies, projectiles…)

I am also disappointed that this episode didn’t cover your journey into the wonderland of FOV.

But hey, I am glad they liked it and I am glad that the game looks great. Doom needed a proper installment. (And I am not necessarily hating on Doom 3.)

  • playdude92 .

    Doom me in.

  • Evil Octopus

The games I like are better than the games you like – rich and jack every prerectum

  • SUPERMAD

Previously Recorded is the best video game discussion show, period.

  • Embodied

pshhh! Let them live in their own world. It’s funnier that way.

  • eron

they did say it wasn’t the first.

  • junkevil

Seriously though, what is it with Bethesda and bobbleheads?

  • Embodied

Wonder if Jack wants to express his tentacle fetish with that T-shirt… I mean I would.

  • junkevil

They even have a new logo.

  • RLMkeepitup

    welcome, stay a while

  • RLMkeepitup

not sure if true fan or sarcastic sane person – prerec staffers

  • fred

Eh — don’t know about that but it’s the only one I subscribe too. Total-biscuit’s okay etc.

  • fred

Unfortunately they had that stream after they shot (and maybe edited) the video. They could have put it in later but they probably already tore down the set by then. Agreed — that would have been a good addition to the review.

  • fred

    Gamers are sensitive creatures.

  • fred

Killzone is a lot slower than DOOM. (any DOOM besides 3)

  • fred

We’ll storm the palace and CAST THEM OUT! Whose with me?

    Guys?

  • fred

    That’s every gamer.

  • Manioc

It sounds like a great game, although the Serious Sam franchise has been consistently doing everything you guys praise for years.

  • Glyph Wright

    Discussion?

    Video game??

    SHOW??!

  • SUPERMAD

    Yes…
    …yes…
    …and YES!!!!

  • SUPERMAD

A little too fast and irritating plus his accent.

  • SUPERMAD

    True Super Fan.

Of all the RLM stuff that gets posted on Facebook, I click on the Pre-Recs the fastest. The fact that they’re short helps, but both Rich and Jack have good insight into what makes games good. I rarely disagree with them.

  • TheVerySpecialK

Plus, Serious Sam: The Second Encounter was both a singleplayer and multiplayer masterpiece, unlike DOOM (which really only shines in the campaign).

  • jef_leppard

“Doom It Up” is my new favorite song!

  • Ogrot

    1. They mentioned that Doom was not the first 2.5 perspective shooter. (2.5 because they were dealing with 2 dimensional sprites on a 3d plane. Just strafe a circle around a guy and you’ll see that their heads are always looking at you and they swap eight direction poses for the body based on your angle to them.)

    2. Wolfenstein 3D clone never stuck as a criticism shorthand. Prolly because Wolfenstein 3D clone is cumbersome to say, Doom was more popular, and a lot of the games that would follow its wake shamelessly tried to exploit both its aesthetics and play style. I’m looking at you Duke Nukem 3d, Witchhaven, Rise of the Triad, etc.

  • Pre Rec is the new DCEU. *slits wrists* *gouges out eyes*

  • tOmy`

There were some odd, empty, slightly boring places in the third one tho.

  • tOmy`

They are kinda finding their rhythm, but they are still pretty superficial and… uhm, feels a bit uninformed.

The whole FOV shenanigan on stream made me once again realize that these two are not the perfect source of information for me.

  • Hank_Henshaw

I will agree on them with their opinion about FPS on pc vs. FPS on consoles. Something got lost once every developer was making their games for consoles first, and a shitty port for pc later. It doesn’t mean that all consoles shooters are bad, not at all. I just wish there had been more pc-exclusive fps games in the past 15 years. Or at least more that were developed for pc first, with a shitty port for consoles later (as it was in the beginning!).

  • Hank_Henshaw

My favorite Doom clone was Heretic. You could fly, look up and down, lean. It even had the “curling nascar” sound effect in it! Raven Software had a good run of games with Heretic, Hexen, Soldier of Fortune, Jedi Knight II, Star Trek: Elite Force, Quake 4… now they are doing Cock of Doody games. 🙁

  • RockyDmoney

Resistance 3 has a lot of what you are praising as well. No Health regen, fast paced, weapon wheel, weapon upgrades…it is more story driven though

  • Bubs

    I think you misspelled “worst”.

  • SUPERMAD

ripping on them is like a “thing,” I get it

  • Ogrot

Goldeneye was in that weird tweener stage that was part of what made that game special. It was a shift to more realistic graphics, and featured some stealth gameplay which were innovations to the genre for sure. But otherwise stuck to the doom formula of non regenerating health (in fact no health packs other than armor pickups). It did suffer from problems due to console limitations and pioneered the work arounds that would become mainstays in the genre on the weaker console generations (generous hip fire auto aim to compensate for lack of joystick sensitivity and slower movement speeds to make up for joypad stickiness and processing issues.)

That said halo was the watershed game for the modern fps. It’s features of regenerating health, linear pacing, cinematic cutscenes, sections scripted to feature vehicle or special weapon (I.e. Here is your vehicle section, here is where you use your sniper etc.) was all featured in one chartbusting package.

  • Mike Magnum

Call of Duty always seemed to me like a by the numbers FPS. Hell every game is pretty much the same. I can’t believe that people are bitching over COD Infinite Warfare. Because they want to add Space Battles to the game. Personally im not a huge FPS fan. But i do like them when they have some personality. Duke Nukem 3D is probably my favorite. But i also enjoyed all the classics like Heretic, Hexen, Quake and Doom.

  • OMNI

Well,..Jack and Rich don’t exactly do their homework

  • Bubs

When’s the next episode of “Out-of-Touch Gamers Pretend They’re Not Out-Of-Touch”? Most [successful] reviewers have some idea of what they’re going to talk about before they film so that they can guide their viewers along a linear train of thought. They also occasionally include facts. Less condescension would be nice, too, but not required.

    #ProTips

  • tOmy`

Well, they did get into that whole Doom-clone discussion for about 50 seconds, so there was that! They obviously know their shit!

(However, if my memory serves me right, Jack didn’t even play PC games back then, right?)

  • Cakefarts

When Doom (the very first one) came out you had to download it (the first nine levels only mind you) from a BBS in three parts. There were kb limits that kept me from getting all three parts until the next day. This single day delay was such an intolerable burden that me and a buddy divided up the downloading duty and then we took our parts to each others homes on a few floppy discs so that we each could have a complete copy. Now that I am older I no longer need to be the first kid on my block to have the latest thing .. so I may get it once all the hub bub dies down … and they work out all the kinks and glitches. Also by then the price will be $10 or $20. Then it might be fun.

In the meantime I am inspired to reinstall Doom 2. Bought books and aids on how to make my own levels. Wasted literally WEEKS of time on multiplayer. I loved it. Hope I still do.

  • Embodied

They didn’t mentioned the multiplayer. I’m mainly interested in the solo game but it seems to be pretty desastrous if I take a look on the steam reviews. Why not mentioned that? Why not criticize that? It’s also a part of Doom. And not an unimportant one.

  • What was the name of that song at the end?

  • Hank_Henshaw

No pc at the farm. You are correct.

  • RLMkeepitup

goldeneye was as big a deal for the 90s consoles as halo was for the 2000s. I recently replayed it splitscreen and the mechanics don’t hold up well though. #nostalgia

  • fred

    DOOM It Up – youtube

  • fred

I’m not an English professor but —

  • fred

Jack is the console guy Rich is pc

  • Hey Hey Hee hee(The Pee Pee Song)

    Paste after youtube: watch?v=CJP8J84vzTA

  • Hank_Henshaw

It’s the official theme of Doom (2016).

  • AKA Mr. Wint

Jack knows Legend of Zelda, Pogaymon, Binding of Isaac….. uhhh, anybody want to throw me a bone here?

  • Embodied

They gave us the impression that Doom is a flawless game without reviewing the bad multiplayer. If we review a game we cannot look only at the good things. The complete product is what counts.

  • Embodied

He has a point. No Duke Nukem, no Turok. And the whole Doom clone hysteria was over 1996 with Golden Eye on N64 and Quake on PC. Then the genre was called FPS. And Half – Life a Doom clone? Nope.

  • Embodied

probably Super Mario, Mega Man and Metroid judging from their background

  • Bubs

You’re making the false assumption that Rich and Jack have any idea of what they’re doing and/or talking about. They don’t. If you want a real review, you’ve come to the wrong place.

  • Embodied

It’s funny. I wrote the exact same thing five pre rec episodes earlier. Arkham Knight episode. So…. YES I do know where I am. But maybe others don’t.

  • Embodied

maybe I should use my old profile pic. Playing newbie here has it’s merrits but slowly it’s starts to become unpleasent.

  • NilbogResident

Seems like a pure FPS experience… like DOOM. I like it.

I find endless cutscenes and stories boring. Glad to see DOOM taking us back to what makes gaming great.

  • Ogrot

I’d buy that. I’d also add that Goldeneye’s greatest charm shined in the multiplayer modes. Which for the time were extremely verbose and charmingly rough and allowed for a lot of laughs. But yeah manual aiming/iron sighting was bizarrely implemented and feels and looks bad, auto aim on hip firing generous, controls are as sticky as most console shooters of that generation, and enemy AI was the typical charge and shoot variety, not to mention that early 3d looks pretty terrible.

I would also add it is in that very tiny family of a movie tie in game that was actually good. You can prolly count those on one hand. But that is the golden age of Rare for you.

  • So I just pooped allover the floor and threw down a ScarJo doll in it. I’ve successfully convinced myself that I’m watching Rupert Sanders Ghost In The Shell. I give it a C-. The C stands for Cosby and the minus means it’s going to be a long night.

  • The Wicker Man (BWF)

I’m at least 5 videos behind. Waiting on Plinkett to return. CLEARLY Previously Recorded is at the top of my to-do list whenever that happens.

  • Thanatos2k

Painkiller has also, but they’ve been getting worse.

  • Malevolence

I was shot, so I bashed a person’s head in and I didn’t get any health…. What kind of “how to” video is this?

  • It’s a floppy disk, not disc. Nice try, Millennial.

  • fred

Ok the multiplayer is mediocre and doesn’t belong with the game and was probably an add-on by executive demand. Multiplayer shooters are boring bullshit most of the time anyways — it’s the fucking Campaign that counts and is typically left out in these +++A titles. DOOM got single player right, and has a decent map builder and that’s all that fucking matters in my book. (I do agree that they should have waited a little while to shoot the review, since it seems that they discovered the map builder in a later stream)

  • fred

How to get revenge — on someone who shoots you.

  • fred

Hell yeah. Don’t forget about the Twitch streams on Sundays and Wednesday nights !!

  • fred

Be sure to go to Angry Joe instead…or that one really fat white guy — which is most of them.

  • DarkFluffy revolution

    Super cool!

  • RiverDevil

To Rich, single player is the complete product

  • Cream-A-Thon

The Plinkett TFA review is cuming coming Memorial Day weekend, the traditional SW premiere slut slot. There is a trailer up now There is a fork in my brane.

  • DarkFluffy revolution

I think they had a reason. Not even a bad one in my opinion. Probably they thought if they mentioned that the multi sucks most of the potencial buyers wouldn’t purchase Doom because it is all about multiplayer today. “fred” here has made a post about that, too.

  • Ogrot

If the C stands for Cosby how do you even remember it? Also shouldn’t you see a doctorrr?

  • Evil Octopus

Most gamers are not also game reviewers.

  • Darth Shatner

Are you asking so you can watch it and trash it because you have too much time on your hands, an inferiority complex, and no real-life social skills? Then probably next week, little man. Make sure mom has your PB&J ready for you first, cause you so CRANKY.

  • Darth Shatner

Then why are you here, binky? Shouldn’t you be making your own video game review video with all that super knowledge you’ve got knocking around up in your brainspace?

  • Darth Shatner

Half-Life was not a Doom clone. But people still called it a Doom clone. That was their point.

  • Amarzden

This game is broken, my health doesn’t restore if I stand still & do nothing for 5 seconds. 0/10 Polygorn

  • DarkFluffy revolution

    Cool as ice

  • Cream-A-Thon

You gotta hypnotize’m first then molest them through their mom jeans. It’s the only way to be sure.

  • Ogrot

Is Polygorn an ethnic culture and arts magazine for the Gorn aliens from Star Trak?

  • Variant

To be fair neither to Mike and Jay sometimes. On occasion when listening to one of their commentary tracks I find myself yelling at them yelling at the screen, because they forgot something crucial I wished I could be there to mention. That’s okay though, I consider it part of the experience.

  • OMNI

Oh I couldn’t agree more. Kids these days…

  • Adam Baldwin

Only thing you guys missed is weapons! Most games today only allow you to carry two weapons. That’s one of the many things I love about Doom, and seems to be carried over to this new game… THANK GOD!

  • Cakefarts

I feel like I have been carded entering a bar or something. I find that refreshingly nostalgic too! Thanks buddy.

  • BarryLegg

First time I’ve got properly into a game then checked out a review and pretty much 100% agreed with it. And the other guy who commented just down there is right, MORE THAN TWO WEAPONS! YAY!

  • BarryLegg

Oh and by the way – haven’t even considered opening the multiplayer option and I wouldn’t even if it were supposed to really great – Doom is about the single player mode, on Nightmare difficulty. Death to false Metal.

  • Paulus Decimus Meridius

I never got into Doom or Quake. Maybe because my first FPS were Duke Nukem and Blood, you know, games that are fun to play. This game doesn’t even feel doomesque, where’s the heavy music?

  • andy

Hey Rich I didn’t realize “genre” was three syllables!

  • Bhazor

Wheres the XCom 2 pre rec? How am I supposed to know if Rich likes Xcom if he won’t make a review of it.

  • ChefSammo

I’ve heard it’s a pretty good horror game just not a great doom sequel.

  • OMNI

It’s a great game with a lot of suspense. It follows in the vein of Half Life, and I think “Id” was smart to create Doom 3 the way they did as people were looking for more substance in FPS’ at the time.
Doom 3’s gameplay ca be very fast and “in your face” if you play it that way and there is no regenerating health a game tactic that I’ve always been on the fence about although Wofenstein New Order handled the regenerating health idea very well.

  • Grayson Perkins

I want a pre rec for Battlefield 1 when it comes out!!!

  • Paul S.

    nice review guys

  • Chase D

Great review guys! I especially enjoyed the Harold and Maude reference. That had me laughing till it hurt

  • Jigsaw

I don’t know a single person, player or critic, who has referred to Half-Life as a Doom clone back then.

The first person shooter genre was well established by 1998, with titles like Quake, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem, SiN, Dark Forces, Turok, Blood and Rainbox Six being released since then. Not to mention related games like Descent or Forsaken.

Rise of the Triad was referred to as a Doom clone, but Half-Life wasn’t. At least no widely enough to matter.

  • Ras Golubevs

I don’t understand people who is complaining in comment section about Rich and Jack. Why the fuck are you watching this then? Fuck off to a different sites if you don’t like something, little bitches.

  • Griffin A Tremaine

Talk about more games you like! I love this shit

  • Seth

    Awesomesauce.

Came up on Quake level design and Doom and Tribes. Finally got a little time to game on summer break and this is my first stop!!!

  • Seth

You guys have the best job ever, btw. Lmao.
