Rich and Jack play Cuphead, a Run and Gun shooter whose art looks alright I guess.

First! And I’d say definitely more Silly Symphony inspired.

  • Jeg Simmons

this is very early disney and Fleischer style rubber arm animation style. Popeye and the like.

    LOVE IT!!!

  • The game is beautifully animated but it looks like a bit of a bore to play. Probably just not my cup of tea, though.

  • Luke Prior

of course it’s weird if there’s no music, that applies to everything. sound design is at least 50% of the experience.

  • mattska

this is very helpful because I saw a meme of this guy the other day and now I get the joke. thanks.

  • Eben Charles Sullivan

Sounds like a modern day Treasure game.

  • frankelee

Just Contra? As if Contra wasn’t fucking amazing!

Also that art direction is incredible.

  • Nigel Pepper Cock

The new format for the show works really well.

  • moron

Its been over a month since the last BotW and that wasnt even a real BotW. Not that I mind the other content but BotW is your best programming. Get on it you hacks!

  • The Wicker Man (BWF)

2 pretentious twats misusing gaming genre terminology as usual. Stick to being f*ckable Rich.

  • Andy James

This looks like a game that would be fun for about two hours, and then I’d never play it again.

  • Fart Magnus

Yep – never heard of it. But then, I don’t play video games and I mostly don’t like them.

  • Bubs

This ain’t no BladeRunner HITB. FUCK OFF!

  • Personally I’m not much of a fan of games that don’t give you any reason to not be shooting all the time – Contra, however, does have an edge over this in that shooting things is actually fun in it. I watch this and I’m like – not convinced they’re actually hitting anything? 99% of it is boss battles, and when all the bosses do is blink to indicate damage it kinda seems like you’re just hitting everything with fly swatters. In Contra shit is flying around, exploding, dudes are falling off cliffs… there’s a lot of chaos going on and much of it is perpetuated by yourself. From the streams I’ve watched, I’m just not seeing that here. I’ll agree that this game does have a beautifully animated artstyle though.

    Breathe Bubs… just breathe…

  • DeColonise

Nah, I stick to nex machina for a while longer.
But agree it had a neat graphics design.

  • RLMkeepitup

its too much like contra and not enough like megaman. these are things i know

  • EJ

Yeah no matter how amazing a game looks, and I absolutely love the look of this game, after an hour or two the graphics start to become invisible and it’s down to the gameplay. Which looks fine but unremarkable.

  • RLMkeepitup

its okay neither do rich or jack

  • Andy James

In fairness, I don’t have any great desire to play side-scrolling platform shooters any more. They were great in 1987, but you can do a hell of a lot more with action and adventure games now.

  • ChildofLight

They should focus on Half in the bag. at least one per week. better two. As it was in the past. Everything else as bonus content. And Pre Rec isnt even bonus. it’s basicaly a own show on youtube now.

  • EJ

I like that HitB has started to focus on movies they actually want to talk about. It had gotten to the point where every time a big-budget superhero and/or action movie came out, they felt like they had to review it and they looked like they were just getting it over with.

  • I have more of a problem with games that design their mechanics around limitations because “that’s what old games were like”. I actually rather enjoy Risk of Rain but I see absolutely no reason why they disallow me the ability to shoot upwards – other than “that’s what old games were like!” So they design a myriad of complex powerup mechanics much of which is there to help combat the fact that you can’t just shoot wherever you want to shoot. So at least this game got that right. I think that sidescrollers have their place though – they offer a type of gameplay that is unique unto itself – and in some cases more playable than the 3D counterpart. I used to really love this game on SNES when I was a kid called “Metal Warriors” – in it you could pilot one of like 6 different giant mechs, and if you were in a bad spot you could even hit select to get out of your ship and fly around with a jetpack as a tiny man until you found another stray vehicle lying around. This type of gameplay in versus mode with a friend was a fucking blast – but if you transplanted that idea to 3D what you’d be left with is a lot of empty space and a completely different level design, and the action would probably be paced a lot differently. What I’m saying is I don’t want Metal Warriors to be Armored Core or Mechwarrior – those are their own things. If I were to see that game remade today I would still want it on a fixed 2D plane, or it wouldn’t be the same type of game anymore.

It often IS 1987. Consider that if today is 10/07/2017, it was 1987 for 364 days, while it has only ever been 2017 for 280 days. So it is 1987 almost 23% more often than it is 2017.

Josh and Jack should do a web series of aspect ratios and color temperatures. Josh can lecture and Jack can be offended.

  • Movie Wan Kenovie

Mike an Jay must be on their way to watch Blade Runner now. I always wonder how long does it take them to prepare the script and film the HITB episode. How about a Behind the Scenes episode you fhacks? Or are you afraid to reveal just how pointless your lives are?

  • Bubs

My last post was deleted by a mod. Maybe I wasn’t clear:
This. Ain’t. No. BLADE RUNNER. Review.

the original was way better. this one was so slow i wanted to take a nap

  • Strelnikov

Jack, this is not Tex Avery-style, this is (as somebody way down at the bottom pointed out) Max Fleischer/Depression-era Disney/very early Warner Brothers style, where everybody has noodle arms and legs, and the colors are screamingly bright because they are using two-strip Technicolor. Tex Avery was a contemporary of Chuck Jones and the 1940s-50s styles of animation.

“Now that’s what I call cross-brand synergy! Woo!”

  • Pop Culture Reference

Script? HITB seems like they are riffing about the movie. Although the story arc of Lightning Fast VHS Repair requires the literary polish of a Henry James novel. Or possibly a Rick James memoir.

  • Terriosaurus Hex

I sorely miss Rich’s cackling, stoned (looking), supple face already… you’ve no idea how much that improves everything. Oh and Jack too, of course.

  • Kawaii as Fuck

You guys act like Contra meets Tex Avery isn’t one of the coolest fucking games to come out in years, because you’re wrong, it is.

  • Pop Culture Reference

I’m eagerly waiting for the follow-up game, Jockstrap-Head.

  • Pop Culture Reference

Contra meets Tex Avery? I thought that was Operation Iraqi Freedom?

  • Notice how there’s zero footage past world two?
“the parry system doesn’t work half the time”
Awful criticism guys, Cuphead aims to do one thing and does it perfectly, shitting on it because the media hyped it up isn’t the fault of the game.

  • alex doucet

I dig this new format I hope they keep it

  • Rob.

Love the new format, but I also love to see you guys, your beautiful faces. Love the background music so much!

  • Duckler

    Needs more animated “Six Fuel”

  • Duckler

Yet again, two people I mostly like talk about a game I’ll never play. Do not stop entertaining me!

  • EJ

It takes a lot of work to make it look like they’re just having a casual conversation.

  • goldbrood

I would disagree wholefartedly with that sentiment. There are only 6 run n gun type segments in the style of contra

  • Papa Figo

Also, they don’t mention that dispite the friendly graphics the game story revolves around COLLECTING SOULS FOR THE DEVIL! Which is either great or terrible depending on your orientation, but certainly not unremarkable.

Are you sure it isn’t because they are shut in weirdoes? Wasn’t one of them raised in a barn?
