Best of the Worst: Plinketto #3

February 5, 2017211 Comments

The Plinketto board is back to terrorize the BOTW gang. It’s possible with the selections at hand, the ball landed on the worst films possible. Is it fate? Is it the universe telling these losers to get a life? We’ll let YOU decide.

  • Mr_Show

    Yay!

  • STfanboy

I’ve been waiting for another BOTW since….

  • Weirdo

    yayyyyyyyyy

  • thestalkinghead

    yep

  • RiverDevil

Why is Ice Cream Man on Plinketto, They already watched and discussed it. Jack loved it

  • Oh snap

  • Bill

YES! Space Raiders was the very first movie that I picked out at the video store the day my parents got a VCR!

  • jonstamos

It was a common rental for me as a kid for our Betamax.

  • Tama Boyle

Those matte paintings were pretty lush.

  • Topdek

Like Fantastic Four; Space Raiders shows what Roger Corman can do with an adequate budget, cast and crew.

  • Chandlerart

Everyone is so excited about Space Raiders that I kinda hate to burst this bubble… but, most (if not all) of the FX shots and the music were all lifted from “Battle Beyond the Stars”.

  • Adez

Checking IMDB, Horner was uncredited for Space Raiders, a gig after Comran’s Battle Beyond The Stars

  • frankelee

This is like the Puppy Bowl but with chubby, middle-aged guys!

  • Joe Hernandez

Battle Beyond the Stars!! Good eye Adez.

  • thestalkinghead

    love the freeze finish

  • Pop Culture Reference

Like an episode of Police Squad.
**freeze finish, keeps pouring coffee into Ed Hocken’s coffee cup, it overflows, etc.**

  • Pop Culture Reference

Space Raiders looks far better than Boyhood.

  • Pop Culture Reference

    Like the Trump Cabinet?

  • RedLetterMediumsDotCorn

    Ffffffuck yeah! Moar Mike.

  • jmt

Space Pliskin isn’t a pun you fucking hack frauds.

    IT’S A SPOONERISM!

  • Captain Matticus, LP Inc.

    They had another copy.

They should load up the board with Nukie.

  • fred

Once or twice a year you gotta watch Dredd. You just gotta do it. Also what’s up with Rich here, is he drunk, delirious, or BOTH?

  • Otherhand

    Diabetic.

  • frankelee

The Trump Cabinet doesn’t warm my heart though.

  • frankelee

It took 12 weeks to make!

  • frankelee

I certainly hope it isn’t AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIDS.

  • fred

I would argue that Dredd has better writing than Arrival, which is another favorite sci-fi film from this decade. Granted they’re very different films, but Dredd has stronger set up and pay off, character development and world building in the dialogue — in my opinion.

  • A spoonerism would be Plake Snissken.

  • LameSame

    eeeewwww

  • I mean, it’s basically just alliteration with a slanted rhyme.

  • MichaelKz

    Awww, nap time Rich Evans.

  • david dallas

I am sure someone else has mentioned it, but “Battle Beyond the Stars” is where most of the models and effects shots come from (which Corman also made).

  • Joe Syxpac

I remember watching Space Raiders in the Hole and we all came to agreement that it was a quality Roger Corman flick.

Though it does reuse a lot of ships and space scenes from Battle Beyond the Stars.

  • Joe Syxpac

Wasn’t that the episode where they just went to black for 45 minutes?

  • Hieronymus Friedrich von Münch

still haven’t worked out you need to offset some of the pins to make plinko work properly i see.

  • Buckaroo

Tickled to see Invasion Force on the list of hopefuls! I worked on that movie during the miserable, sweltering summer of ’89 in Mobile, AL. Even appear on camera a few times. I’d say “good memories,” but, y’know, it’s an AIP flick…

  • Don’t worry Josh. I even fell asleep during this episode while you guys were explaining the plot. I’m finishing it up now.

  • Yeah my major beef with Roger Corman is what is exactly was depicted in some of the clips in Space Raiders. That space battle footage? Used in at least two other movies. Same crafts, same shots. And that’s the thing about those disconnected space shots, you hardly ever see two ships in frame at the same time. A lot of it is just closeups of a ship flying, closeups of a ship shooting, or closeups of a ship exploding. Speaking specifically of the hammer-head looking craft, I’m pretty sure that was in Battle Beyond The Stars. In FACT – I just looked at the poster for Battle Beyond The Stars, and it’s fucking on it.

  • Hahaha the closeup of Mike’s eyes “watching” the music notes he recognized as being written by a familiar Star Trek composer. Good ear, Mike.

  • Daniel Harrington

That is Lisa Robin Kelly, from the 70s show in The Survivor.

  • Nick B

I fucking hate magic kid. I remember in the early 90s I was obsessed with Three Ninjas. The cover and name of that shitty movie caught my eye, I hurried home from the video store, popped this in and was treated to a shitty, coming of age garbage movie. I don’t remember much about it aside from being angry at it.

  • sigaba

When I worked for Corman in the aughts, the story around the office was that he was still angry at John Sayles and James Cameron for spending “so much money” on Battle — I think it cost maybe a million dollars, but the way Corman distributes it only barely made its money back. So to get back at Cameron specifically Corman re-used ALL the model shots on every movie he could for years after that.

The score is Jamie Horner’s score from Battle, just recut for the movie. I guarantee you Horner didn’t write one note for this film under its name. Also Horner was sorta notorious for ripping himself off, go listen to the Krull score some time.

  • andychrist

oh …. other people have mentioned battle beyond the stars and the stock battlestar galactaca sound effects …………. so i wont.

  • alta.lovell@mail.ru

I’ve profited 104,000 bucks in last 12 months by freelancing on-line and I was able to do it by working part-time for several h /daily. • Craig Rigby

is guardians of the galaxy a reboot of/ sequel to space raiders? they
even have the alien doing the ‘my boys wanted to eat you!’ shtick lo.

  • andychrist

battle beyond the stars is a great …. well a good …… film , i went the cinema to see it and i keep seeing the ships and full scenes in other films ….. and not just corman ones , fairly sure they turned up in some tv shows as well

  • Jaws

Yeah, he is the Master of Star Trek.

  • Ben Eklom

This is all really informative stuff, thanks for posting this.

  • Devil_Dinosaur

    lo.

  • Chris Steinmayer

I’m surprised you didn’t point out that the ships and music were all from Battle Beyond the Stars.

  • Alex Doucet

You know me personally, I love this show.

  • luvs2pwge✓MissSaudiArabia

    Jack has male pattern baldness

  • Cream-A-Thon

Black Scorpion is a Corman favorite of mine from that era. Thank you!

  • Bill Hiers

I knew this would come back.

  • BarryLegg

What’s going on with the camerawork right at the beginning? (My guess: beer).

  • Brian Levine

Hey morons, ALL of the music and the FX were taken from Corman’s OTHER Star Wars ripoff Battle Beyond the Stars.

Of course, you guys already knew this, and just wanted to get pleasure from watching the fan base go psycho. We are Pavlov’s Dogs and so we will.

  • Mikkel Rasmussen

“My name is Mike Stoklasa and I’m an alcoholic … cheeeEEEEEEEERS!”

  • sigaba

I worked for New Concorde around the time “Barbarian” and “Shakedown” were getting made. “Barbarian” is a “Scorpion King” knockoff so you’re sorta close 🙂

  • sigaba

It’s probably the best thing Corman ever had his name on.

  • Eucratides_Megas

Besides that one guy who could break the entire Obama administration over his knee- Mattis.

  • andychrist

may i suggest adding some british films to the board or wheel ? or whatever replaces them ? stuff like “sex lives of the potato men” or “i bought a vampire motorcycle” or perhaps the public information films of the 70s “building sites bite” and “apaches” … or even the tourist film “telly savalas looks at birmigham” …. yes that telly savalas and yes that birmingham

  • Miranda

Keaton’s Cop was filmed in Galveston, TX. I didn’t recognize it until I noticed I’d sat at that same table at the Oyster Bar on the seawall. Galveston is weird as fuck, and there’s nothing to do, so long sequences of Abe Vigoda eating oysters and ice cream was just filler.

  • Neal Hyde

I think Mike’s alcoholism and Jay’s pituitary treatments are causing memory lapses. Ice Cream Man has been done on Best of the Worst already, back in Episode 18 in 2014. Better take it off the selection of the Plinketto board and replace it with a Gil Gerard retrospective.

  • TMC_Sherpa

Would you say not landing that particular job was a good thing or a bad thing? It’s always hard to tell with movies like that.

  • fred

I’m a bit lonely these days. (lights 3rd cigarette while still smoking the last 2)

  • EJ

What’s that insane British informational film from like the 1970s that’s supposed to teach kids not to trespass on train tracks? Where it’s like a dystopian future hunger games-type thing where they have kids race across the tracks and try not to get hit by trains? And it’s super graphic and gory?

  • sigaba

A couple friends of mine ended up working on it, the composer is still a friend. They have stories.

  • EJ

Honestly the episodes where the movies are just completely dull get a little tedious in turn. You guys admit you cheat sometimes, nobody’s gonna get mad if the next time you run across a stinker like the first one you just chuck it and try again.

  • John

is nobody in this comment section going to mention battle beyond the stars?

  • maikimo

i feel like josh was making some sort of joke about ‘vaguely remembering’ watching it, as in they’re so inundated with shitty movies that they all blur together/become forgetful at some point. the way mike reacted seemed to imply otherwise, though.

  • maikimo

    ugh, it’s a josh episode.

  • Greg

    Yay! PLinketto is back!

  • Greg

    I think Josh is cool!

  • TheVerySpecialK

That superhero movie BOTW is probably my all-time favorite BOTW episode.

  • Greg

I know! I guess the guys never saw Battle Beyond the Stars??? I loved that movie!

  • James Horner’s music for SPACE RAIDERS is recycled, along with most of the sets and model photography, from BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, which predated STAR TREK II: WRATH OF KHAN.

It was Corman’s highest budgeted movie so he recycled from it left right and centre – for his ALIEN rip offs, for ANDROID, and the music even showed up in BARBARIAN QUEEN.

  • Pop Culture Reference

Sean Spicer also wants RLM to “dial it back,” since he finds broad farcical satire more threatening than, say, ISIS or North Korea.

  • Pop Culture Reference

Do Josh and Jack cancel each other out?

  • Pop Culture Reference

I enjoyed Battle of the Circus of the Stars.

  • Greg

Your dad was more than likely an alcoholic that abused you physically and or mentally, thats why your taking shots at mike, hes a very brilliant guy, that obviously has had YOU obsessed with HIM, and the site for years.. I think you should go home and rethink your life..

  • Hank Schkorio

Sorry to hear about your diabetus Rich. Did you catch it off a toilet seat?

  • Buckaroo

Can’t argue there. But how many movies CAN compete with Barry Bostwick in gold spandex?

  • Greg

I disagree with your assumption.. Your just jealous of his STATUS and $$$ hes making… Go back to your job at Target ……….

  • Greg

ok that REALLY made me laff!!

  • The Wicker Man (BWF)

Josh is a personality vacuum who sort of acts like a dick to Rich.

  • The Wicker Man (BWF)

It wasn’t done. It was the April Fool’s episode.

  • Tit Window

    Boooo!

  • Hank Schkorio

The best BOTW was that one where the gymnastics guy has to fight off a bunch of villagers using his gymnastics. Classic.

  • Otherhand

This never went away. You’re thinking of Wheel OTW.

  • andychrist

the finishing line – all of those public information films are public domain now and freely available in a lot of places .apaches has an actual sort of story to it and they all get killed in interesting ways one by one while playing cowboys and indians on a farm . and building sites bite has a time travel , teleport , game show , thing going on

  • Robotpals

Those James Horner leavings have shown up in dozens of movies, and those are all held up by rights issues. RiffTrax had to withdraw Wizards of the Lost Kingdom from their website because it used the same music.

  • Bill Hiers

    Oops.

  • Robotpals

Oh no! Someone who is interested in the movies, stays on topic, and is knowledgeable (as well as being amiable and fun)?

    DO NOT WANT!

    Seriously, I like the Wizard.

  • Robotpals

As someone else mentioned, the effects shots and music were recycled from Battle Beyond the Stars, which had a sizeable budget, and Corman strip mined it to add value to dozens of later projects. He did something similar with the Carnosaur franchise, which reused dinosaur effects shots so much that characters in later entries would sometimes inexplicably change their outfits (to match the existing footage) just before getting killed by dinosaurs.

  • Robotpals

    The Magnificent Seven… IN SPACE!

It even has Robert Vaughn in the same exact role.

  • Robotpals

  • Dom_DeLuise’s_Armpit_Child

    Is Josh replacing Susan?

  • sigaba

All of his Poe adaptations are great. I do work for Blumhouse now and in the conference room is an enormous European theatrical poster from Corman’s The Raven.

  • Ragged Gypsy

Are you saying Josh and Jack are used by big pharma to make money off people?

  • Frank Lovejoy

    Reference!

With cutting edge wit like that you should write for SNL! They’ve got a big backlog of “binders full of women” gags that need punching-up.

  • Joe Syxpac

Battle of the Dancing with the Stars was better.

  • KingVidiot

SeverenAtredies, you beat me to it.
I grew up watching Battle Beyond the Stars (John Boy and Robert Vaughan!) on TV and VHS, and my friends and I rented Space Raiders randomly and marveled over how almost all of the space scenes and matte shots, along with the music, were taken directly from BBTS.
All its missing is a buxom actress like Sybil Danning from BBTS.
At that time I learned about the genius of Corman.
Now he does all that Sharknado crap.

  • Jared Blando

The music is almost completely from another movie called Battle Beyond the Stars, which was a 1980 space action film. Its orchestral score was done by James Horner as well, and much of it sounds alot like Star Trek 2 and 3. Horner is known for having similar riffs in his scores (all are wonderful however). Also Space Raiders re-uses a great many things from Battle Beyond the Stars, including the main ship model, scenes, and special effects…

  • So what you’re saying is someone should throw shit in their face.

  • Did someone say BOTW? I KNOW WHAT THAT IS!!!!! ENDLESS TRASH!!!!!

Nah jk, I love u guys

  • Yeah I kinda dislike Roger Corman specifically because the only movie of his I ever liked was Battle Beyond The Stars – and everything he made after that is trash and anything set in space recycled the fuck out of those FX shots.

  • MonkeyKing1969

That little boy form Space Raider made me say, “Jesus that kid was in everything in the 1980s, at least for kid roles”. I guess over the years he has gotten some work, but he is one of these stars that was everywhere and then ‘poof’.

  • Andy James

I don’t know what everyone’s talking about. I don’t remember any of that shit being on Battle of the Network Stars.

  • LameSame

Oh hey, Josh! Didn’t know you personally posted on here. But really, you’re a boring killjoy blowhard!

  • Thanatos

I like how you can see the Wheel of the Worst in the background.

  • SeekerLancer

I was like, man I’ve seen those miniatures before but it wasn’t “Space Raiders” because I remembered the ship with boobs because it had a female AI which doesn’t seem to be the case in this movie. Turns out Roger Corman just took the footage from his earlier film “Battle Beyond the Stars” and used it for this. What a guy.

  • Pop Culture Reference

RLM isn’t as “woke” as I’d like it to be. I find that problematic. Luckily I have my GeekCrate, which is amazing and curated!

  • Robotpals

Oh hey, Lame… Dammit! You caught me!

  • Michael Gavin Johnston

You should do a puppet-themed “BOTW,” featuring puppet movies like “The Dark Crystal,” “Labyrinth,” and “The Never Ending Story.” I think that would be an awesome episode.

  • Michael Gavin Johnston

I like how your name is Thanatos. I killed you in Secret of mana.

  • Jaws

    Are those bad movies though.

  • It just means talking trash on someone/something, and that’s exactly what he was doing.

  • No they aren’t. Like at all. And the problem with good movies is that it’s more than likely a good number of them have seen them – and BOTW works best when it’s their first time viewing something. Also with good movies people tend to just watch them.

  • You mean recycling.

  • Cream-A-Thon

They could do Meet the Feebles, that was a mixed-bag and by a director of dubious note.

  • EJ

It’s fine, that’s just the white people usage of it.

  • EJ

Thanks, I was beginning to wonder if that movie was real and wasn’t just some weird dream I had.

  • KingVidiot

yep and James Cameron worked on those space FX which are pretty good – it was long before he became a director – in fact he did so much stuff in art direction and FX in Corman’s world it prepared him well to make some good movies, until he didn’t 🙂

  • Pop Culture Reference

I’d like to see the no-budget Italian knock-off of “Labyrinth.”

  • Pop Culture Reference

All of these movies lack the complex eroticism of “Explodin’ Varmints.”

  • Pop Culture Reference

    That’s what I said.

  • Pop Culture Reference

His attempts to keep the conversation on-topic really ruined the episode.

  • Pop Culture Reference

I think “Geteven” is the greatest film of the 20th century. Suck on that, Orson Welles!

  • Donaldo Knottso

I’m diggin’ the beard, but Josh needs to go ahead and bite the bullet and shave his head and get some scary neck tattoos.

  • Jaws

You’re into that sort of thing huh, kinky.

  • Child0fLight

Was a nightmare in the original, too. There he was always behind you punishing every little mistake.

  • Jon

    Roger Corman for the win!!

  • Lt Hurwitz

    No politics on RLM

  • Child0fLight

In the 90s complicated, desperate characters became more popular than the yellow cashmere sweater wearing nice young man next door. I’ve read somewhere that this was the main reason for the most former 80s kid stars to drop under the radar.

  • KingVidiot

you mean The Seven Samurai in space, it was the original story
it was fun to compare the TV edit of BBTS to the VHS version – it’s amazing what used to be edited for content (too racy) back then

  • Robotpals

DID YOU KNOW… The Seven Samurai was originally released in America as “The Magnificent Seven.” All prints with that title card were eventually destroyed prior to the release of the Western remake.

  • fred

Don’t let the shitty criterion cover fool you; The Fisher King is really fucking great.

  • fred

It would help that maniacal gleam he gets on occasion.

  • TheVerySpecialK

What’s wrong with the Criterion collection? Actually I didn’t know this film was in the collection. I agree though, it’s a great film.

  • fred

I’m fine with Criterion, just not that shitty crayola cover that gives 0 info on the film.

  • TheVerySpecialK

Oh OK! That makes sense. My local library has what seems to be the entire criterion collection in the movies section, so I usually just scan the shelf for the Criterion symbol when I’m trying to find something to watch. But yeah, some of the covers are a bit pretentious.

  • fred

Look how thoughtful and minimalist our covers are.

  • TheVerySpecialK

They could definitely afford to be more dense, with each cover having more things going on.

  • fred

Here at Criterion we SPARE NO EXPENSE!!!!

  • fred

It’s not what the fans want. In the days of Donald Trump, and ISIS, and polio, what the fans want…is a dark Star Wars movie.

It’s a Terry Gilliam movie so it’s bound to be at least interesting and beautifully shot if not great. That’s one of his better ones though.

Things I got out of this video:

  • ikdks

Didn’t the guy that did the Battlestar Galactica’s special effects get sued by ILM? I seem to remember that he worked for Lucas then set up shop for himself, and took his experience to BSG. Stuff like hitting the wires that hold up telephone poles with a steel bolt, to get the laserblast sound effects?

Maybe that’s why they credit star wars, because Lucas sued them into it.

…and isn’t he music at 43:59 the deathstalker and the warriors from hell theme?

Please continue your high caliber of work. You guys are what I look to for in well-grounded movie criticism that does not lapse into pretension, and a laugh, and frankly it’s almost like you are all some old friends we the viewers get to observe but do not really know on a more intimate level… we witness snippets of your lives and personalities from afar, behind the screens and in front of them, and somehow live vicariously through your honest presentations. i remember stumbling into this movie in theatres- had to sit in the front row in a packed house. i had no preconceptions of movie and was at first not sure what to make of the “propaganda” sequences but it didnt hinder the pace for me; the rest of the audience was baffled though; i loved the 90210/melrose place spin on the cast- beautiful and superficial with no real understanding of the reality of total war and i loved the “veteran” characters as well esp ironside and the drill sergeant- essentially, live long enough and you might gain some wisdom

starship troopers is a novel by robert heinlen and is one of those “high brow” sci-fi books that many people a few years older than myself really rave over and these people hated the film

the superficial beauty coupled with extreme violence really works well and the 90210/melrose place vibe also works well though i dont really know why

this film is a stalwart and i still will watch it when it is on cable – nice review and keep it up

I’ve profited 104 thousand dollars previous year by freelancing on-line and I was able to do it by working part-time for 3 or sometimes more hrs on daily basis. I’m using an earning opportunity I found online and I am so amazed that i earned so much extra income. It’s so newbie-friendly and I’m so grateful that I found out about it. Just the other day I noticed there was an awesome interview with Roger on the Criterion Channel. If you have Filmstruck you can see it.
